The Lofts location is in the heart of Downtown Tampa. It's close proximity to the Straz Performing Arts Center, University of Tampa, all Court Houses, Tampa Theater, Florida Aquarium, all Museums, Tampa Times Forum, Restaurants, Riverwalk, Channelside and Ybor City make it an ideal location for work or play.
Fred is a very nice guy who greeted us at the door with keys in hand, as arranged. The loft is beautifully designed, open and airy, and the bed is very comfortable. The plank floors are wider than standard, and the renovation was a huge success. The floors did not bounce or creak. We enjoyed our time there very much. We did not get a chance to eat at Spain, which is also owned by Fred and his sisters, but it was filled every night. Parking was easy an inexpensive, and there is an excellent coffee shop, Indigo, right around the corner on Franklin.
If you enjoy staying in a beautiful metropolitan downtown (and Tampa has a very attractive metro-area), within safe and easy walking distance to a wide array of restaurants, museums, theaters, the University of Tampa, and the lovely Tampa river walk (along the Hillsborough River), the Spain Lofts are for you.
The Lofts are located in the heart of downtown Tampa above the Spain Restaurant, itself a delightful, reasonably priced eatery that serves wonderfully delicious meals. Fred Castro, the owner of the property, is a genuinely friendly and personable individual who exudes warmth, grace and class. It was a real pleasure to get to know him and to meet a few of his family member. It was equally pleasurable to interact with his employees who are pleasant and friendly folks who are well trained and very adept at what they do.
The Spain Lofts have six units on two floors above the restaurant. My understanding is the five of the six are leased on a long-term basis. All units are accessible only through a secure private entrance with its own elevator. The unit available for short-term rental periods, in which my wife and I stayed, is on the second floor. It is spacious, clean and quiet. Its furnishings and equipment, while basic, are adequate and appropriate for metro-living.
Both my wife and I ride bicycles for pleasure and exercise. Tampa is essentially "biker friendly," and we enjoyed biking the river walk, leaving the downtown area by crossing the Hillsborough River on the Platt Street Bridge, and biking Bayshore Boulevard (on an extra-wide sidewalk). As the name implies, Bayshore Boulevard runs along the Hillsborough (Tampa) Bay, past several very nice residential areas, including the fashionable Hyde Park. The five-plus mile ride from downtown to the end of the sidewalk is gorgeous. It can be extended for a few miles on modestly traveled streets to the Mac Dill Air Force Base, located on the southern edge of the South Tampa peninsula. The round-trip ride from the Lofts to Mac Dill is about 14 to 15 miles. Davis Islands, also located very close to downtown, is another beautiful ride easily done from the Lofts. Tampa has a number of other bike trails including the Courtney Campbell Causeway running toward Clearwater.
All in all, we greatly enjoyed our five-week stay at the Spain Lofts. The location is superb---fantastic! The rental unit (loft apartment) is modern, safe, clean and quiet. The Spain Restaurant provides a delightful dinning experience. Fred is a great host---welcoming, outgoing and interested in providing value for his renters and customers. His staff members are equally "customer friendly."
Fred met us on arrival and gave us a great orientation not only to the Spain Loft, but also to the neighborhood. Both Fred's hospitality and the Spain Loft were fantastic. We were at a conference all week and the Spain Loft became our oasis after very long days. It's a very comfortable space with lots of nice amenities.
What a wonderful stay! Fred was gracious and accommodating with our late evening arrival and offered to let us leave mid-afternoon on departure day. The loft is clean, nicely but simply decorated, and has all the essentials plus some unanticipated extras (umbrella, local menus, laundry detergent, drinks in the fridge). The location is wonderful: such an abundance of restaurants, parks and riverfront nearby, and convention center and other convention hotels within walking distance. There is no assigned parking, but there is a lot 1/2 block away for $8/day, and street parking is free overnight and on weekends. I would definitely return and highly recommend Fred's loft to anyone looking for downtown Tampa accommodation.
We stayed for three weeks over the holidays and absolutely loved it. Spacious, quiet, close to everything. Fred is a truly gracious and kind person- any need we had with the loft, he met as soon as possible. One of my favorite moments was experiencing the live flamenco music and delicious food at his restaurant downstairs. I'd highly recommend this place, and greatly look forward to returning one day!
From beginning to end, perfect. The apartment was immaculate, the living space functional and airy and the bed was very comfortable. Fred is gracious and welcoming and I really enjoyed visiting his restaurant down in street level. Everything felt like home. I began planning my next trip before this one ended!
We were in town to take the Florida Bar exam, a stressful experience to say the least, but Fred's loft made the trip much, much better. Great location (5 minute walk to restaurants, bars, museums, convention center, scenic river promenade), clean and spacious loft, quiet, and impressive water pressure. Highly recommended!
