About this listing
Our beautiful farmhouse offers privacy plus all the comforts of home in a secluded location, with shops, pubs, cove swimming and sailing just minutes away! Perfect for 4-8 guests, with gorgeous views, large kitchen , fireplace and wood stove!
Nestled into a valley between the towns of Bantry and Ballydehob--just minutes from the sea, and many great swimming coves--this 8-acre property is secluded and private, yet amenities such as the health food store, and Rosie’s (one of Ireland’s great local pubs!) are conveniently located nearby. The south-facing farmhouse at Shronagree (nose-of-the-wind) is a spacious and comfortable 4 bedroom residence. The house is a perfect mix of open social spaces and private areas, with fabulous views from all rooms. The en suite, large master bedroom is about the size of an entire New York City apartment! A geothermal heat pump provides underfloor heating and hot water. There are 2.5 bathrooms, a fireplace in the sitting-room, and a wood stove in the living room. The kitchen has a gas stove and dishwasher, and excellent tasting drinking water is provided by an on-site well. The house has its own washer and dryer, plus Internet access to round out all the modern necessities!
The area has plenty of year-round activities. We find the local newspaper, The Southern Star, to be a great source of information. A short drive to the west takes you sailing in the town of Schullis, and to the east, enjoy the rich history of Skibbereen. The walking routes of West Cork are famous, and travelers come from around the world for these amazing journeys. There is a vibrant arts community, and many artists, writers and musicians have used the house for various creative projects.
Enjoy, create, and take in the stars. They are quite spectacular in this valley!
Guests have access to the entire house with no off-limit spaces.
Interaction with Guests
There is a caretaker nearby to answer any questions. We will have literature with house information on arrival. We would not be interacting with guests as we would not be present during the guest's stay.
This is a very special part of the world. You are in the midst of rural farming Ireland, with artists scattered throughout the area. Most young families grow their own food and are living rich, sustainable lives. There is always something interesting to do, but if you feel like having a peaceful retreat, you can do that too.
We recommend having a car, but guests have stayed here with bicycles as their only transport. The walking is fabulous!
No smoking inside the house. Some pets may be allowed for an additional fee. Clean, considerate, adult guests and families only, please! There will be a contact sheet with various numbers for your (website hidden)-cycling and trash will be taken care of for the guests. The cleaning is provided for the guests.
We spent almost a week at this rustic farmhouse near Ballydehob. The house is located at the end of a long and narrow country road. It provides a quiet and secluded location, but still close to Ballydehob and Bantry. There is a well stocked supermarket in Bantry and a small grocery in Ballydehob. The house itself is very comfortable and had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. We cooked breakfast and dinner there most nights. The was plenty of room for six of us. Overall, if you are looking for a quiet getaway for your family, this is a good choice. The house is very convenient for trips around the peninsulas of West Cork. Be sure to visit Mizen Head, especially on a sunny day!
We received a wonderful welcome at Shronagree. The house was fabulous with lots of living space, the open fires in the kitchen and living room and the swing in the garden were terrific. We love the area and the location of Shronagree is a great base from which to explore West Cork. We would certainly recommend this property.
Our family holiday in a rural, very quiet location was exactly what we wanted. Our kids were able to go wild here without disturbing anyone. They didn't even disturb us that much thanks to the size of the house and the two generous living areas!
We also appreciated the amount of stuff available for our use: the well equipped kitchen, the extra towels, blankets etc. We were able to cook big hearty meals for 8 people.
We didn't meet Caroline but her emails were friendly and helpful. Ruth called in during the week to see if we needed anything.
The main issue we had was with the Internet which wasn't working. As the mobile phone coverage in the area is also not good that was a problem for us. Some of our group found the beds very hard but I personally slept very well due to the absolute quiet of the location. There are no showers and one of the two baths leaks a bit but for us these were not problems that impeded our enjoyment of West Cork in any way. In summary: a lovely, roomy farmhouse where we managed to get away from it all and spend special time with extended family.
We had absolutely lovely (month-long) stay. The location is ideal for exploring West Cork. The Shronagree home is spacious and charming, with artistic touches and an eye toward family. It is wonderfully remote, 1.25 miles up a windy lane lined blackberry bushes. Our kids loved running around the 8 acres, birding, kicking a soccer ball, picking blackberries, swinging on the rope swing. We were welcomed with fruit and semi-stocked refrigerator (thank you!). The plates and bowls (gorgeous!) are all hand made by Caroline, the owner. Ruth, the caretaker, was terrific, responding quickly to any needs or questions. That said, there were several maintenance issues with the home, small, but unable to be fixed until we had cleared out. All in all we had a fantastic and memorable stay.
We have just returned from a wonderful two week stay at Shronagree. We arrived late at night and were intrigued by the long drive up to the house on the rough road but as soon as we turned the key we were struck by the place. It had a special atmosphere and the personality and creativity of the owners shone through in each room. We were delighted with the spaciousness of the house and our three little girls loved their room and had great fun with all the Teddy's and games scattered throughout. The master bedroom was really great and the spacious ensuite with the lovely old style roll top bath. The living area and kitchen is utterly charming with a fantastic range style cooker obviously used to some home cooking for large gatherings, great well used big casserole dishes, heavy frying pans and lots of baking equipment. We enjoyed our morning tea outside overlooking the surrounding countryside, the kitchen door leads out to a nice warm sun trap. The kids had hours of fun on the lovely homemade swing which hangs from the lovely big tree just out front. It's just a short drive to Ballydehob where we picked up our daily bread from Hudson's health store, had the occasional pint in Levi's or Rosie's and travelled just a short distance to Schull for a little more action. It's a perfect spot to explore the whole area from clonakilty, Baltimore, Lough hyne all the way out the other direction to Golleen, barley cove and Mizen head. Shronagree is a very special place and we hope to return again someday.
This is a marvellous and big house on a great location. The house is inspiring and far removed from the average standard holiday home. The caretaker is a very nice person.
