5 OAKS

House - Entire home/apt · Grand Avenue, Ojai, CA 93023, United States

enjoy a relaxing, cozy, private and quiet home in the heart of downtown ojai, just a 5 minute walk to shops, restaurants, wine tasting, spas, bars, hikes, parks and the sunday farmers market.

The Space

the space includes a private guest bedroom (queen) with a closet and 2 dressers if you're gonna make yourself at home! as well as a pullout sofa queen bed in the living room. (air mattress also available on request) theres a living room, dining room, full bathroom with plenty of shelf space, full kitchen (gas stoves, be mindful) , laundry room, gas/ wood burning stove ( be careful! if you rent, i'll provide instructions) and a big screened in back porch with a table and chairs as well as a great big back yard thats fenced in and private. its a beautiful old, rustic house, yet not "rustic" as code for "not nice".. just that this place has a lot of character. its main feature in my opinion is the big back yard where you'll feel relaxed while still being in very close walking distance to all the attractions of downtown ojai.

Guest Access

you can make yourself at home. there are lots of books and board games. if you rent i'll instruct you on the wifi and how to plug in your personal laptop to the tv and speakers if you wanna relax on the couch and watch movies. you can use all the kitchenware, i just ask that you please be careful, clean and respectful. theres no dishwasher but i'll provide a new clean sponge and earth friendly dish soap for you :) help yourself to the drawer of kitchen towels. the stovetop and oven are gas, so there will be an "aim- a - flame" to light it up. again,, please be careful. make sure the gas is completely off when not in use. you can use the spices and condiments in the fridge if you'd like as well. there's a piano you can play, washer and dryer you can use and a bbq out back (again be careful! and you'll need charcoal)

Interaction with Guests

you wont see much of me unfortunately.. but i'll make sure the house is all clean and inviting.

The Neighborhood

the house is about 5 blocks from the downtown ojai "arcade" where you'll find lots of restaurants, bars, shops, spas and the beautiful libbey park. i am just across the street and down the hill from 2 trail heads, one being the shelf road hike. its about an hour round trip and offers gorgeous views of the valley.
so you can hike shelf road and then walk down to ojai roasting company on ojai ave. for a coffee. if you're hungry. just a few blocks east from "ORC", head to knead baking company for an egg sandwich. there's also a health food market, rainbow bridge, that serves freshly made food (veg and vegan options) and offers grocery items as well. enjoy strolling the main drag. consider a massage at the oaks or one of the many other spas within walking distance. theres even wine tasting at casa barranca. wanna go on a bike ride? the mob shop (also walking distance) rents bikes by the day. i recommend visiting meiners oaks too, just a 10 minute drive or 20 min. bike ride away, "M.O." is where you'll find the incredible farmer and the cook restaurant and grocery as well as papa lennons pizza. there are 5 grocery stores in ojai all close by so if you plan on cooking you'll be able to find everything you need! the farmers market on sunday is 4 blocks away and not to be missed! if you venture up the 33 (about a 15 min. drive) head to the legendary deer lodge. further up the 33 there are countless hikes and trails, swimming holes and hot springs.. IF you can find them! if you plan on renting, i'll be sure to leave a book that details a lot of fun and beautiful day hikes. other restaurants and bars to check out are hip, a vegan cafe as well as the ojai brewing company or "OBC" that serves 20 beers on tap and has great food. also walking distance is osteria monte grappa, a delicious italian restaurant and the ojai playhouse, our cute little movie theatre that only shows one movie at a time! theres a pharmacy, a post office as well as a business center all close by. check out barts books for the cutest outdoor bookstore you'll ever see. great deals! so, you'll have everything you need without having to drive at all unless you plan on visiting lake casitas and renting a boat or going fishing, that's about a 15 min. drive. i highly recommend it!

Getting around

walk, rent a bike at mob shop or try out the ojai trolley. there's a visitors center on ojai ave. just across from the ojai coffee roasters if you have any more questions. again, i stress that from this location you really can feel secluded yet also be able to walk practically anywhere you want to go.

Other Things to Note

i am a private person and am not doing a personal photo or engaging a whole lot. i hope that doesn't discourage your interest. ojai is a really special place and aside from the places i mentioned i encourage you to research all of the interesting things that go on here. if you are interested in the spiritual and/or metaphysical, there are numerous workshops, shops and seminars that go on. meditation mount is a good place to start.

  • We had a wonderful time at 5 Oaks! The location is great -- we walked everywhere -- but we often didn't want to leave because the house is so charming and peaceful. Sitting outside on the picnic table is heavenly, with orange blossoms and lavender filling the air, and the screened in porch is divine. The record player and music collection are fabulous, and the bed was comfy. As others have said, don't come here if you're looking for fancy accommodations. But if you want a peaceful stay in a charming, funky home that's close to town, this is it!

  • We stayed at 5 Oaks in March 2014 and simply couldn't have had a better location for a decompressing break. The house is utterly charming, cozy and well equipped. To be fair, it wouldn't be to everyone's taste: while clean and tidy it is on the rustic side and has a well-loved, well-lived in feel.

It really is staying in someone's home (Jo lives there when not renting out) and you are sharing the place with her books, records and life, but that was absolutely the appeal for us.

  • Staying at 5 OAKS was a great experience for me and my three traveling companions. Our trip was a mix of staying in (cooking a meal, drinking wine, watching movies) and going out (restaurants, farmers market, hiking trails). 5 OAKS was ideal for both scenarios!

Don't come here expecting all the latest amenities, but what you will get is a well-eqipped, spacious house where everything works as it should. The coziness and overall feel of the place make it a perfect way to experience Ojai.

The location is great: we walked most places, but when our feet got tired we drove. I could hear a little road noise from the street at night, but it didn't seem intrusive to me - and I consider myself a light sleeper.

    Would definitely stay here again!

  • the only reason I give Jo's place 4 rather than 5 stars is so not to mislead anyone who's looking for a pampered Ojai stay. For my family and I it was a 6 star and well worth the price! Rustic, lived in, perfectly "cabin-esq" without being a cabin. Breakfast picnic (table) in the backyard while my kids swung on the tree swing in their PJs in the beautiful Ojai morning sun, is a new memory for (website hidden)'s real record player (not a high-end stereo turn table) and collection of well worn folk LPs has re-introduced me to old memories (and of course I'm now on (website hidden) looking for one for my SF home). If creaky screen doors, a light smell of burnt oak from fireplace, mismatched old towels, and a slightly out of tune piano isn't your thing you may find Jo's house too rough. For us, all of the above, plus a comfortable bed, and huge screened in back porch made this the perfect 3 night get away! The house has 1 spacious bedroom with a double bed, a pull-out sofa in the huge open living room, and I think I saw an air mattress in the closet. Water pressure is good, and kitchen & bathroom clean and well stocked. There was a large RV in the driveway as Jo mentions, but other than making it a little tough to get to the back yard it was really not an issue. Location perfect, close enough to stroll to downtown, without the downtown traffic noise. We would definitely stay there again. Thank you Jo!!

  • great experience stayed here, the place is nice and well kept. Perfect for a relaxing getaway

  • Excellent experience all around. I spent a couple nights on my own to get away from the city and it was a very peaceful, quiet, relaxing, comfortable home with a cozy (website hidden) was very accommodating and the entire experience was positive. I have no criticisms.

  • Jo was nice and helpful and it was a spacious place, I appreciated the green cleaners used and the notes around the house, but it was not as quiet as I hoped. Grand avenue is not as busy as the main road but it is kind of a through street and the bedroom although not right next to the road does face the road, so the cars driving by disturbed me. But I am very sound sensitive and live at the end of a dead-end road, so it might not be an issue for you.

  • My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at 5 OAKS. We loved being able to walk to all of the restaurants and shops downtown but also enjoyed the privacy and quiet of the neighborhood.

The house is very spacious and comfortable and we enjoyed our relaxing evenings listening to music with a few glasses of wine. Make sure you check out the backyard with it's fruit trees and a swing!

And if you hear some rustling in the bushes at night, do not be alarmed. It's not a robber, just the neighborhood raccoons looking for some food :-)

  • Classic old school California house. Close to things in town, cozy and has a record player with records! Record player you ask? I said that to give you an idea of what this place is like.
