Belize was the last leg of a two week adventure for us. Due to flight problems, we arrived a day late. We also managed to screw up the boat taxi and get off at the wrong island. Sure enough, we eventually found our way to San Pedro.
We were immediately greeted by Carmen's husband, John (also goes by Robin). He showed us the house, told us where to go around the island, and even sent his son that night to invite us to dinner at his restaurant. Ande what food they make - Carmen and John make such incredible food.
I have never before been so blown away by hospitality. Any place that treats me like Carmen and John did is fantastic and DESERVES far more business. I can't rave enough about it.
John and Carmen also hooked us up with a friend of his named Prince - a pleasant gentleman who gave us good deals on every activity we could possibly want. We never felt pressured at all. We ended up doing everything we wanted to do below budget because of Prince! Plus he would pick us up and drop us off. He's a great guy.
The place was clean when we arrived, with dishes and towels. The bedroom is air conditioned. Despite being on a partially unlit street, we never felt unsafe and there was never any incidents around us. We were mere minutes walk from the hub of activity, the docks (for all adventures and taxis), or one of the beaches. It was a fantastic location.
So? Should you go?
If you are debating Belize, the answer is yes - the country is small, but amazing and beautiful!
Should you use Carmen's place?
It is not the cheapest place there, but it is not the most expensive by far. Frankly. for the peace of mind of having a kitchen, a bathroom, a bed room and a living room gave me, I think it's a steal.
In short - we will be back for sure.
nice, quiet place... a nice walking distance to the beach, relaxed and calm
We stayed here for a 4-day visit. We were in San Pedro for a scuba diving vacation.
Our host, Carmen, was wonderful and welcoming. By email before heading down, she quickly and thoroughly answered all our questions. She helped us out of a jam, too, last minute, when we discovered our contact info for her caretaker, John Harvey, didn't get packed. She got us the info just as were boarding our flight! She also arranged to have John meet us at the airport. She even had him stock the frig with cold water and a couple beers. To top it off, she even paid for our first night’s meal at John’s roadside family-run grill. (John, by the way, is a real gem -- exceptionally friendly, very helpful.) The apartment was clean and tidy. The two of us had plenty of room to spread out. The queen-sized bed was comfortable, and the bedroom AC worked fine.
Unfortunately, other significant considerations got in the way of our fully enjoying the visit. These included:
The AirBnB photograph of the apartment’s exterior, combined with the description of the premises, is a bit misleading. While the place IS clean both inside and out, the yard is not (a falling down out-building occupies one corner). More important, the apartment’s location, a “well-worn” residential area of town, is just a couple of blocks from the island’s only airport and single runway. From around 6 in the morning to 9 at night, you WILL hear flights taking off and landing. This wasn't enough to keep us up, but it was a constant distraction. ..... When we arrived, there was a strong smell of mothballs. It mostly dissipated by the end of our visit, but never fully went away. ..... The screen was missing on the bathroom window, meaning we couldn't leave it open. The one time we did, a small lizard found it’s way inside. Not a problem for us -- she was friendly -- but, the next day, we found a large iguana in the bushes right outside this window. What a surprise that would have been, if s/he'd been the one to come indoors to visit. ..... On our first full day in San Pedro, when we returned exhausted from diving, we had to first call John to deal with a bunch of things: fix our shower (the hot water faucet handle fell off, then the shower stopped working altogether); replace (we thought) a missing bulb in the kitchen ceiling light (turns out he had to replace the whole fixture, it was broken); bring us more toilet paper (there was just the one roll) and a trash can (none anywhere in the apartment). ..... Finally, on our last morning, while barefoot cooking breakfast at the stove, I suddenly experienced a strong buzzing sensation in my left hand and up my right arm. Yeap! I was ELECTROCUTED! Apparently, the stove wasn’t properly grounded. Had I just stepped out of the (now working) shower -- barefoot AND wet -- there’s a good chance I wouldn’t be here to tell the story. Some kinda scarey. From the airport, I called John and told him what happened. We just hope he made it over quickly and fixed things right for the next guest.
Overall, a clean, welcoming place to stay for a few days. We felt, however, that the owner needs to be more mindful of both the smaller details as well as the larger use and safety issues involved when offering this apartment for rent.
We stayed in the top unit for 9 nights. The area is safe as there are 'local' neighbours who are always around during the day/night keeping an eye out. The apartment is only a two minute walk to the main road and it only takes another minute to get to the ocean shore by walking through the crazy canuck bar or the resort beside it. You can walk along the shore into town in about 10 minutes. There are lots of great restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are also lots of dive, snorkel and other tour operators. Overall this is a great place to stay to enjoy san pedro belize.
Our stay was delightful. San Pedro is fantastic. The pure ocean and the vast marine life make this a "divers paradise". The locals are very friendly, there's a variety of restaurants, but the supermarkets often overcharge you for often expired food. The apartment itself is nice and comfy. It was a little dirty when we arrived, but beside's that it was generally good. It was a 10 minute walk to down town, and near a supermarket and a great pizza place called Pinoccios. John, the caretaker, was most helpful and sweet to us, lending us his phone, giving us good tips and ect. We were glad to make friends, his son took us fishing and we got the chance to eat at his restaurant as well, and it was definetly the best meal we had on the island! You have to go there. Go to San Pedro if you're a diver or just like a relaxed, tropical invironment.
Carmen's place in San Pedro is great - clean, comfortable and safe. It is about a 15 or 20 minute walk into downtown San Pedro, where there are a ton of restaurants, or about 3 or 4 minute walk from the beach! There are restaurants all along the beach, and a grocery/convenience store nearby as well. The kitchen is fully stocked - we cooked breakfast nearly every morning. Carmen's caretaker was very helpful in getting us settled and even took us out for a complimentary supper our first night (Robin's Jamaican jerk chicken - so good!).
-a/c in bedroom
-toilet works well
-far away from the main part of town. get a golf cart or bike rental or plan on taking a lot of taxis.
-shower has very low water pressure
-overall condition - it's not actually dirty, it's just old and rundown so no matter how clean it actually is it still looks dirty.
-infested with cockroaches - my personal best was killing 4 in one night
-kitchen was not equipped. there was 1 bowl and like 2 pans.
-tv never worked and we were there for 5 days.
-no washer or dryer but they are listed as amenities.
The trip was a success. Carmen and her caretaker took excellent care of us. We arrived early and phoned John and he met us at the property within 10 minutes. TV wasn't working, but a new one showed up a couple days later. We didn't spend too much time in the room, but it worked for what we needed it for. I would recommend this place to someone who is looking for an inexpensive place in San Pedro.
Place was great, close to things of convenience, yet far enough away to be quiet and peaceful. Enjoy!
Carmen's apartment is great! Only a 2 minute walk from the beach and all the shops and restaurants, yet it is also located on a quiet street which is a bonus. The caretaker, John was very nice, and picked us up from the water taxi terminal. He invited us over to his restaurant called Robin's Kitchen and it was the best jerk chicken we've had! Carmen even called us to say hello.
I would definitely stay at her apartment again, it was very clean, full kitchen with cups, kettle, and cutlery. A\C in the bedroom and lots of movie channels on the tv. Nice way to unwind after a long day in the sun.
