This up valley secluded and private 'retreat cottage' is a light and airy hillside country home w/ 2bdrms (2queens) w/2 baths, lg kitchen, livingrm, sunroom, garden patio. Ideal for two couples or a family with kids. The kitchen is fully equipped to make dinners in, or use the gas BBQ on the patio and eat outside at any of the 4 tables on the deck or in the yard. This is a very quiet neighborhood and this house, surrounded by mature forest, is a non-smoking, no parties or pets (no dogs, cats, or any other animals) relaxing oasis in the heart of the Napa Valley. Sip wine off the deck or in the hammock and watch a colorful sunset after a fabulous day exploring the valley, it's famous wineries and spectacular scenery! The location is only 5 mins. to downtown St. Helena, many wineries, CIA, Tra Vigne, Farmstead and other fine dining, hiking, biking, art galleries, shopping and 10 minutes to Calistoga spas/mudbaths. Must enjoy watching local wildlife (deer/racoons) eat off of backyard!! Very quiet, private yard and secluded for 1- 2 couples, or a small family. (For groups of 5 or 6/ 3rd couple, there is a fold-out sofa bed in the sun room, if one couple doesn't mind not having a private room).
The Napa Valley is enjoyable year round with it's sunny weather, beautiful foliage, wineries pouring their spectacular offerings, art galleries and museums. And you will LOVE the awesome warm mineral pools and spas of Calistoga (7 miles north from here!). So plan to kick back and relax with your family or friends after a fabulous Napa Valley touring day in the lush surrounds of my peacefully secluded garden. The big part of the charm here is the 'get away from it all' serenity and quiet .... so for people planning 'events', please read my 'noise policy' under Rules of the House before booking as this is probably not the venue for you. It's a great area and my neighbors appreciate you respecting their peace and quiet.
There is something for everyone in the Napa Valley....so don't miss the boat (or the 'wine gondola' !) If you're looking for a relaxing, wine country getaway .... come to the Wine Country Cottage as my guest!

Interaction with Guests
I interact with guests by email and I am available for questions by text or phone call if they need any help while staying at the house. Otherwise, they are completely on their own at the house after I qualify them for staying at the house during the internet booking process. I DO, however, live in the house downstairs in a studio apartment that is completely separate/locked off from the guests during their stay. I only interact with guests if they need me on the weekend for something. (I work all day during the weekends and am reachable by phone/text).
This is a very quiet, secluded, forested neighborhood with only 4 houses off an old stagecoach road just @ 3 miles outside of the downtown city of St. Helena. It is a wonderful walking, biking, strolling road but with no lights or sidewalks --- so be careful and watch for cars (deer and wild animals) coming and going from nearby wineries down the street.
You will need a car to get around. Taxi service is extremely expensive as cabs come mostly from Napa city (30 minutes away) and will charge a minimum of $50 one-way into town and another $50 to pick you up ($100 minimum) after your dinner reservation. Everyone who stays at the house drives their own vehicles and has a designated driver to chauffeur them around. Otherwise, it is strongly suggested to hire a limo service to do wine tastings in the local area.
Other Things to Note
Limited parking: 2 cars on driveway at the top only! Must park mindfully and NEVER BACK DOWN THIS STEEP AND DANGEROUS driveway (even sober --- you must drive FORWARD ONLY) as several guests have previously crashed into the rock wall along side this 100 yd long very narrow driveway at great expense to their vehicles (there are NO LIGHTS at night). If this sounds complicated, you may want to keep looking as this may NOT be the house for your venue.
STRICT NOISE POLICY outside after 10pm. Due to recent excessive noise until 3AM that stretched my wonderful neighbors patience to the limit, I am enforcing a strict 10pm loud noise policy on deck and in garden area. Normal conversation is fine, just no yelling or loud music with the bass vibrating the neighbor's homes please! Breach of this house rule will result in forfeit of your security deposit.
ABSOLUTELY No fires (or fireworks) inside or outside during 'fire season' (June - October, or first big rain. (the local Fire Chief lives above us and SF Policeman lives across the street and are strict enforcers)...and just too many trees around to take the risk.
House is on 'septic', so please be kind and try to remember to go 'light on the TP' when possible.
Limited parking - room for 2 cars only on driveway with no available parking on very narrow street.
No pets --- owners have serious allergies, but also your pet would be eaten by local coyotes, foxes or raccoon who 'rule the forest yard' with no fences!
We had a wonderful time in Napa staying at Karen's house. She was super welcoming and the house was comfortable and convenient. We loved all the outdoor spaces for relaxing.
Karen's place was exactly what my family needed. It was simple and a warm and inviting place conveniently located right near St. Helena. Karen was beyond hospitable and welcoming, leaving us a fridge full of essentials to cook. There was a wonderful outdoor space that our family could enjoy, eat meals on and drink the wonderful wine. Overall a wonderful place for a wonderful family trip.
Our weekend stay in St. Helena was outstanding and highlighted with Karen's hospitality. Her home is warm, welcoming and relaxing. We attended a wedding at Beringer Vineyards and the home proved to be extremely convenient being located less than three miles away. When we find ourselves back in St. Helena for an overnight stay, our first request for accommodations will be to Karen.
The cottage is located in a lovely spot in the hills above St. Helena. About a 3 minute drive to Silverado Trail and 4 minutes from Hwy. 29.
Lots of pine trees surround the property, there are also Apple trees and vine tomatoes growing in the yard. The outdoor area is spacious very charming.
Inside, everything is there to meet your cooking needs. In fact, Karen (the owner) stocked the fridge with two packages of bagels, a dozen eggs, cream cheese and milk. There was also two types of coffee that were available. She really goes beyond what's necessary in seeing that her guests feel welcome.
The house is comfortable, a little aged but fine for four people. The larger bedroom has an air conditioner that works great. There is also forced air conditioning throughout, but we were in 100 degree heat and it brought the temp down to the 80s.
A couple of things, the shower head in the smaller ensuite bedroom does not adjust down enough so my wife had to dip in and out of the stream to avoid a direct hit to the head. Also WEAR MOSQUITO REPELLANT if you are dining in the evening outside. Karen has made a couple of bottles available on the porch table just outside the sunroom door which we should have taken more seriously.
All in all if was a very pleasant experience made even better by Karen's thoughtfulness and generosity.
And, her communication skills are excellent!
The Wine Country Cottage was amazing! It felt so cozy and just like a second home for the weekend. It fit my group of friends comfortably and the spacious backyard was a great setting for an outdoor dinner.
Everything we could have possibly needed was provided for us. I loved all the VHS movies that were available to us, too. The location was also really ideal for visiting wineries around St. Helena.
Karen was a great host and I especially loved the welcome letter and little notes around the house that helped us navigate her home.
Warm and cosy home nestled in the hills. We had a great stay and loved our 3 days there. This is Karen's own home and you can tell the difference from a guest home. Lots of small touches that make the house warm, and very well stocked on the food front. Its 5-10 min drive from St Helena town and tons of wineries, so great central location. There are two rooms, so for 6 people we had to use the sofa bed in the living room.
What a lovely place! I cannot say enough good things about Karen's wine country cottage. It was convenient to everything near St. Helena and nicely appointed. It had such great character and made us feel like we were at the home of an old friend. I think the nightcap port put it over the top. (we had way too much wine by then and didnt make it to the port but just like the idea that it was an option in case of insomnia) Highly highly recommended!

About the Host, Karen
I'm a transplant from Los Angeles by way of Sacramento, Eureka, Madrid Spain and the Black Forest, Germany. Took a job in the Napa Valley back in '86 and thought I'd died and gone to heaven! Lived here (in this house) some 25 years, know the Napa Valley well and enjoyed my share of wine tasting, hiking and biking in the area. I love to work around my house and have two great kids (out of the nest- my son is a UC Berkeley grad and daughter goes to Middlebury College in Vermont) and enjoy skiing, mineral baths, hiking, traveling, great cabs, entertaining friends, gardening and some road biking. It's a great place to live and this neighborhood is stellar!
