The Space

Well since I studied art, design and craft there are lots of handmade objects and collections that visually stimulate me and there is a special love of anything textile related from hand knotted rugs to printed fabrics.

Guest Access

Come and go as you wish with your own key. Enjoy tea, water and fresh fruit to take along on your adventures into the city and sometimes there are culinary delights from my husband and I.

Interaction with Guests

I love to interact with guests but am sensitive to their privacy and am able to read body language and would say I am generally gifted in the ability to give people their space needed.

The Neighborhood

I love The Foodery for snacks, great sandwiches made fresh and tasty single beers. Liberty Lands park is a great place to walk to and often has weekend events and a play ground for kids. Art Star is perfect for getting local handmade goodies for yourself, or someone else with everything from journals to record your stay here in Philly to jewelry, baby clothes and plenty of local art. There is just so much great food my very favorites are Standard Tap, great atmosphere fresh local fare, Soy Cafe for a mega healthy dose of fresh healthy food, and Bar Ferdinand for a more upscale experience with quite a wine list. Oh and speaking of wonderful wine lists Jerry's Bar also just opened at the end of our block with a fantastic menu and impeccably tasteful atmosphere. There are lots of free concerts down the street at the Piazza at Schmidt's and the Brooklyn Flea sets up every Sunday. There is even a free yoga session outside on Saturdays at the Piazza and many a sporting event is loved by all on a jumbo tron where people gather to watch in community. Lots of art openings happen right here in the neighborhood during the week and on First Fridays. We have Arcadia Boutique for both men and women as well as Exit Skate shop and the G Spa for manicures and pedicures. If you need to mail anything or get stamps passport photos etc, Liberties Parcel is just up on 2nd Street. If you are more interested in night life Ortlieb's Jazz House is right up Poplar and Lit Ultra Bar is just across Spring Garden on 2nd as are many other clubs and music venues within walking distance of a mile. Just imagine this is just my unique perspective, come explore and create your own personalized experience here in our ever blossoming neighborhood.

Getting around

Ah yes, you have access to the El or elevated train that is roughly a 7 minute walk from our house to Spring Garden Station as well as Girard Station where you can also catch the trolley that takes you all the way to West Philly and the Zoo. Walking into Old City is a mile and takes 15 minutes to all of the fun shopping and places like the Clay Studio, Center for Art and Wood and Wexler gallery. I do walk and bike a lot so tend not to take the bus but Septa buses and trolleys are well networked across this part of the city.

Check In
  • I had a very good experience in Philadelphia with Janell and her partner, who were extremely welcoming and flexible about the check in and check out hours. The apartment is located in a very charming and dynamic hipster neighborhood, which is only two metro stops from downtown. The (big) room and shared bathroom were very tidy and the house had a very original style. I would definitely recommend Janell's house to a friend going to Philly.

  • I stayed 4 nights at the Textile Palace, which is so true to its name, and Janelle and Ross were fabulous hosts! Their home was filled with beautiful handmade items and quirky antiques, giving a lovely, warm and cosy feel AND they also made me feel so welcome, just like an old friend. They are both so thoughtful and generous, whether welcoming me to sit down and have a great home cooked organic breakfast with them, providing some tokens for the train, maps, fresh fruit and mineral water in my room or lending an umbrella for an unexpected downpour. As a solo female traveller I felt very safe in the area, day or night. If you're looking for a welcoming, cosy place to stay with lovely people than this is the place!

  • This is a great space. I loved my bright, spacious, and airy room, with all kinds of comforts and aesthetically pleasing touches. I found my stay there to be perfect--lots of privacy, as well as some lovely conversations with Janell and her husband. They're great people, pleasant and smart and good-natured. I appreciated their hospitality, which included mineral water and a bowl of fresh fruit in my room, the wireless code on a pad of paper, and a welcoming home. I was in town for a conference in City Centre and found it easy to get to the Convention Center (~7 minute walk to the subway and a 5-minute ride) and then really pleasant to come back to a soothing space and interesting neighborhood at night. I highly recommend staying here!!!

  • Just a short ride from the airport and very close to the start of the Philly Marathon, it was a perfect stay for us that we would recommend to anyone.

We very much enjoyed stay in the Jenell's home. Sadly, with the crazy marathon start time, we arrived around 11:15pm and left at 5am- Our only regret is that we could not stay longer.

Janell and her husband were incredibly flexible and accommodating with our schedule. They had fresh fruit, beverages, and coffee waiting for us and were very welcoming when we arrived. We sincerely wished we were able to talk with them further.

The neighborhood was hip and trendy, along with their home. We were able to find parking on the street and would surely have enjoyed the local restaurants and bars if we had the time.
