Family-owned for generations, we have been providing a "Home Away From Home" holiday for guests visiting Belize for over 15 years! Come stay at the cozy cottages of Nabitunich, nestled in the center of a 400-acre working farm, San Lorenzo.
*This is one of two Air BnB listings we have. This listing is for a private room with two double beds; the other listing ("Farm Stay - Private Bunk Bed Room") is for a private room with a bunk bed plus double bed. Both have private bathrooms.
**Please note that I (Suzi) manage the online bookings for Airbnb, but your actual host will be Santiago Juan, the owner and operator of the cottages.
Nabitunich (Mayan for ‘The Stone Cottage’) is a series of accommodations for visitors in Belize. There are a series of 10 unique and comfortable cottages, each with two bedrooms that can accommodate single travelers or groups. There is also a large dining area and veranda, as well as an enclosed indoor studio and large yard spaces. The property surrounding the Nabitunich cottages is a working farm with domestic cattle and horses, as well as beautiful wild birds and a host of organic fruits and vegetables.
We also offer meals and activities, both of which can be purchased and reserved when you arrive. Please let us know in advance if you would be interested in any of these. Price for breakfast is $5USD per person and $10USD per person for dinner.
Nabitunich offers spectacular views of Xunantunich from afar, as well as easy access to rolling pastures, nature hikes, the Mopan river, and the nearby towns of Benque Viejo and San Ignacio. In addition to horseback riding, Hanna Stables offers a wide array of outdoor activities that will thrill nature lovers of all ages. Activities are arranged to suit your preferences and itinerary, ranging from horse riding, swimming, birding or just taking a leisurely walk on one of our nature trails. Exotic gardens surround the cottages of Nabitunich, which provide the perfect setting to witness a spectacular sunset behind Xunantunich.
Please contact us to find out about booking tours, on-site meals, and transportation.
Interaction with Guests
The owner, Santiago Juan, is often busy throughout the day working on the farm or leading horseback riding tours, but he will join guests for a meal. Visitors are also welcome to book a horseback riding tour with Santiago (highly recommended!) to ride around the San Lorenzo Farm, or take an exotic ride to the famous Xunantunich Mayan ruins.
Our cottages are located about a 10 minute drive away from the popular Xunantunich Mayan ruins. Other nearby ruins include Caracol, El Pilar, ATM Cave and more. Every weekend, there is a farmer's market that happens in downtown San Ignacio and makes for a great activity for visitors. There are also other attractions such as a butterfly farm, cave tubing, visiting the Belize Zoo, and more.
It is possible to walk from Nabitunich to downtown San Ignacio or San Jose Succotz, but it's a little far. We can easily arrange for a taxi to come pick you up, or the public bus runs right in front of the property. Visitors who drive over with cars will have private parking on the premises.
Other Things to Note
Please note that we are located in a semi-remote area, 5 miles away from downtown San Ignacio. The best and most accurate way to reach our property is by catching a taxi in San Ignacio and asking the driver to take you to "Hanna Stables" or "Nabitunich." Please do not attempt to walk, as it is very long and involves unpaved roads.
Beautiful farm with lots of flowers! We enjoyed the company and the food was great!
It's been an absolute pleasure staying at Hanna's Stables, in fact we would rate it as the highlight of our vacation. Santiago is a wonderful, fascinating and gracious host, with whom we had the luck to spend great evenings talking about a myriad of subjects. The passion he has for agriculture and his beloved Belize is contagious! The rooms are sparsely furnished but comfortable, with the sounds of the rainforest all around you. The meals at Hanna's Stables are a highlight, with produce almost entirely from the farm itself - delicious! We can't recommend Hanna's Stables enough - a must for anyone visiting the heart of Belize.
Oh man. This place was so cool.
First, Santiago is a very personable and friendly host. He is so committed to the work at Hanna Stables and he is also very easy-going and laid back. He wants you to be comfortable and he is very accommodating. If you have questions about Belize or the area in general, Santiago is a great resource.
The farm is beautiful with lots of flowers and plants, just like the photos. As a guest you can take a hike down by the river and all around the farm, and we strongly recommend doing so--it's beautiful. We weren't able to go on a tour on horseback, but I think that's probably the best way to do it. We did the hike to the nearest ruin and also recommend that--it was gorgeous. Everyone around San Ignacio and San Jose Succotz knows Santiago and Hanna Stables and are really helpful when you tell them where you're staying. (When we went to Tikal, our guide picked us up at the road by Hanna Stables since it was on the way, for example).
The food served at Hanna Stables is tasty and a good value. It also provides a nice opportunity to meet with other guests and swap stories. It offers a communal space, like a hostel, but with your own room, it's the best of both worlds.
The rooms are pretty basic, but tidy and provide you what you need: a bed, a place to put your clothes, and a personal bathroom. As other guests have commented, the accommodations are not "resort-like" but then again, neither is the price! Know that, at least when we were there, a rooster crowed pretty darn early (it is a working farm, afterall!), so if those sorts of things would get under your skin, a pair of ear plugs might help your stay here be more pleasant. :)
All in all, we absolutely recommend Hanna Stables!
I have traveled quite a bit all over the world and have used Airbnb for many of my stays. I have to say this was one of my most enjoyable experiences with any airbnb host. I had no expectations about my trip to Belize. I am so grateful that I chose to go there and stay at Hanna stables. Santiago was a very gracious host and Louis was my tour guide for 2 of my trips. I had nothing planned when I arrived and they were able to help set up the tours and make sure I was able to do everything during my short stay there. My friends flight was delayed and I was really nervous about her not finding the place but Santiago came to the rescue and helped me locate her. :) The food (breakfast and dinner) was great. Most of it is grown on the farm and very fresh. During my stay I did the ATM tour, the Tikal tour to Guatemala and the horse ride up to the ruins. Again everything was very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone.
Our short time at Hanna Stables was a great experience. Santiago welcomed us and was nothing but humble and informative. The food is amazing there, and heading into town (San Ignacio) was easy. The property was gorgeous and we hiked the river trail to the nearest ruin. Everyone in town knows Hanna stables and Santiago, so you can always find your way back. The bus will stop right infront on his street. We did ATM cave tour; highly recommend and they even pick you up and drop you off at your place. Thank you again Santiago for your kindness and hospitality. What a great experience of the culture.
Santiago's farm is an excellent choice for anyone looking to explore the Cayo. The rooms are clean, the food is great, and the host is a venerable encyclopedia of all things local, agricultural, and equine. I had essentially no plans when I arrived but after talking with Santiago for an hour, I had enough information and connections to fill my three days there. Santiago lives a full life and I recommend that you spend an evening on the veranda getting to know him.
The small town of Succotz is up the road about 0.5 miles and the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich are an hour's walk across the pastures and along the river (walk around the cattle). Santiago is well connected in the area and can point you toward the best guide services if you want to explore the caves of ATM or make a longer trip to Tikal.
While I truly enjoyed my time there, not everyone will be satisfied with the simple accommodations. Do not expect reliable wi-fi or hot water. The rooms are basic with spring beds and fluorescent lights. If you're looking for a resort, this isn't it. But if you want to soak up the local scenery, food, culture, and history, the farm is perfect. It really is one of the best places I've ever stayed.
Our stay at Santiago's farm was the most memorable portion of a recent trip to Belize that I took with two friends. The farm is beautiful with all kinds of wildlife, edible plants, and of course Santiago's gorgeous horses. Santiago truly made us feel special and taken care of. His laid back attitude made him really approachable for whatever it was that we needed. We enjoyed talking with him for hours in the evening about random topics. Breakfast and dinner were always delicious, and consisted of fresh juices, veggies and meat right from the farm. Meal times were whenever we woke up or whenever we got hungry. It was easy to arrange a day trip to the ATM cave, and we loved riding horses to the Xunatunich Ruins that are just a short distance from the farm. Evenings were spent chatting, star gazing, and playing card games. Santiago even gave us a medicinal plants tour, and is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to sustainable farming. The only thing I would say would be a point of improvement are the rooms themselves (an ongoing project). We truly felt sad to leave at the end of our time there, and it was because of the care we were shown, and wonderful people that we met during our stay. We all think Santiago is awesome and hope to visit him again someday! Life at Hanna Stables is simple and beautiful. Highly recommended for travelers who want a unique experience.

*Note: I am a Seattle-based individual currently managing booking and marketing for Nabitunich, Hanna Stables, and Nefry's Retreat in Belize, which is why my profile is associated with this vacation listing. The host of Nabitunich is Santiago Juan, whose family has owned and run Nabitunich for over 15 years.
I am an avid traveler and writer/photographer currently based in Seattle, Washington. My travels have taken me all around the United States and beyond, with Air BnB and (website hidden) serving as great resources for finding accommodations and local hosts in cities I visit. As a guest, I am very clean and respectful of the homes I inhabit and the residents who live there. I'm up for grabbing dinner and hanging out with hosts, or leaving them to their privacy if they please. If you'd like to know more, shoot me a message! I can't wait to meet you!
