We joined Airbnb in January 2010 because they offered a way to have travelers have a "homestay" experience. We appreciate travelers who want the experience of staying with "locals" as we have lived in Santa Barbara since 1980. We offer recommendations to activities and restaurants in the area. My husband has a great ability to give gps directions if you don't have your own. Traveling is an art; therefore, we treasure the experiences our guests share with us.
We live in a quiet, designated bungalow area 1 mile from the beach and 6 blocks away from downtown SB. We also are a mere 4 blocks from the Santa Barbara County Bowl. We have neighborhood block parties so our neighborhood is safe and welcoming. We can walk from our home to the beach, and at the beach and back in a little around 1.5 hours.Basically, if you like to walk, you can walk to all of the places you might want to visit in Santa Barbara; the Santa Barbara Art Museum, the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum (a slightly longer walk), the Mission , and, of course, everything which "downtown" offers.
Staying in our neighborhood offers the reality of the joy of living in Santa Barbara. Quiet. The house was built in the 1920's, ,has hardwood floors and a fireplace. The back yard resembles a Balinese resort with outdoor dining and a barbque. We are offering a cozy room with private access, a private bathroom with a shower and bath and direct access to the back yard which offers a comfortable outside space. The room which is 10' x 12' (120 square feet), has a queen sized bed, dresser, closet, wi-fi, cable/dvd, and access to other rooms. You are offered all the amenities you might need, including, shampoo, hair conditioner, washing gel, lotion, towels and bathrobes
My office is across the hall from your room. The neighborhood is safe and quiet. Parking is on the street or you can park your car up our driveway if it makes you feel safer. You also have access to a laundry room.
Coffee (Nespresso machine)/tea available at all times. Breakfast is offered without extra cost. We offer, as an example, fresh local fruit, fresh farm eggs (prepared as you wish) , local bread, greek yoghurt, oatmeal. I love to cook, so lunch and dinner are available at extra cost. You have access to the kitchen and all other rooms in our home. You also have access to our libraries.
We have had guests stay in our home when we were not there.
We have arranged to have a key left for the guest. If you would like to stay with us, you are part of our home and family. We usually enjoy having breakfast with our guests, although, you can breakfast in your own privacy, either outside, in your room or at the dining table. We've lived in Santa Barbara for over 30 years. We have much local information. Please contact for
There is a tram which runs up and down State Street ( the main street in town) for $.50 one way. We are 6 blocks away from the tram. The tram also runs from the train station conveniently six blocks from our home. There is a bus within two blocks which connects to other busses which can take you to further destinations. If you are a UCSB student, there is a free express shuttle out to UCSB.
Guests have access to the living room, dining room, kitchen, media room, my office, laundry room and back yard. Basically they have access to the whole house except our private living area.
Interaction with Guests
Because we believed, when we first joined Airbnb, that it was a homestay, we like to have some contact with our visitors. We like to give our guests recommendations. However, we also respect our guests' privacy. Sometimes we are out of town when a guest arrives. We arrange to have a key available and our guests can contact us at any time. We aim to please. We hope to accommodate our guests with their needs.
We live in a quiet, safe neighborhood that features "bungalow" style architecture. It is a wonderful place to walk around and we are within walking distance of restaurants and small neighborhood grocery stores. We also have block parties so everyone is always looking out for each other. Our neighbors care about each other.
There is a public bus stop two blocks from our house. There is also a tram which runs up and down State Street around 5 blocks from our home.
Parking is free on the street or on our driveway. The best way to get to and from the airport, if you don't have a car, is to use UBER or LYFT.
Other Things to Note
We do have a check in and check out time; however, those times are flexible depending upon whether or not we have guests before you or staying after you leave.
NO SMOKING on premises. Access at all times to the kitchen, living room, dining room and study. Quiet after 10. However, we primarily reside in part of the house where we hear almost nothing. So you could probably make as much noise as you like unless you disturb our neighbors. We welcome you to bring your friends over to enjoy the amenities of our home. If you plan to arrive after 9 p.m. please let us know and we will arrange a key for you.
Evelyn and Lawrence are seasoned Airb'n'bers, which was quite evident from the moment that we arrived. They had detailed instructions, a laminated sheets with instructions and information about their house and the neighborhood, etc. Evelyn in particular has a fairly no-nonsense approach to Airb'n'bing. At times, I felt that she was a little bit less welcoming and understanding than some of the other hosts I have experienced in the past. Lawrence, however, was nothing short of welcoming and enthusiastic! We chatted with him only briefly on our exit, but he seemed really cool and down to earth.
In terms of the accommodations, I will say that the pictures are largely accurate, although -- as usual on Airb'n'b -- the bedroom and bathroom are nowhere near as sunny and bright as they appear in the ad. Also, the bedroom felt much smaller and more crowded than it appeared in the pictures, so I would primarily recommend the place for 1 person or a couple with 1 bag or 2 small suitcases (2 people with 2 large suitcases was too much).
The garden is just as lovely, picturesque and tranquil as it appears in the pictures. Really a gem! Unfortunately, we didn't get to spend much time there, but I think it could be a big added bonus for anyone who is anticipating spending more time around the house.
The breakfast they served was FANTASTIC!!!! One of the better (and healthy!) breakfasts I've had in a while. Delicious freshly-baked scones / popovers, pecan granola + wheat cereal with fresh blueberries in it, good coffee, and apples.
One additional item I will point out: Within a couple minutes of arriving, I was informed by Evelyn of the house's water-rationing policy. Guests are encouraged to (i) keep showers to less than 5 minutes, (ii) use a bucket to catch cold / tempid water while you are heating up water for your shower, and (iii) flush the toilet as infrequently as possible (if it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down, etc.). These water-rationing measures were not a HUGE shock to me, since i am a SoCal native and have therefore come across these policies in the past; however, my husband is French and I think was definitely shocked by this, in particular by the realization that we couldn't freely flush the toilet while on vacation. There is no mention of the water-rationing policy on the ad, but I think it should be added, so that guests understand what they're getting into. Most would probably be fine with it, but I do think it will come as a surprise to some.
Although our hosts weren't there, it couldn't have been easier and more comfortable. The house is really cute, and has a private entrance, and is just a few blocks from state street. The bed was clean and comfy, they had robes for us to use, and left breakfast out. The bathroom was also private, with everything in working order. The patio was gorgeous, with a nice day bed to lie out and read on. Overall it was a great experience!
Lovely welcoming couple, awesome house and great location. Neighborhood is quiet, safe and walking distance to downtown. I really enjoyed my stay.
Evelyn and Lawrence were great hosts. Their place is lovely and had our own private entrance along with a shaded patio with a comfy outdoor day bed to have a glass of wine, read or just chill. Hot spots on State Street are a short distance you can even walk there. Enjoy!
Evelyn and Lawrence offer the ideal Airbnb experience--they are wonderful hosts, and they have a beautiful home in a fantastic location. As hosts, they have put tons of thought and care into the experience of their guests. The bedroom has a private entrance from the back garden (where there is a great covered patio for relaxing), the bathroom is thoughtfully appointed, and Evelyn and Lawrence are always happy to provide tips on the area. Evelyn recommended a great route for walking in the hills that I never would have found on my own--it had amazing views.
Finally, I really appreciate how environmentally conscious Evelyn and Lawrence are. They take the drought seriously, and are doing their part to conserve water (and have recommendations for how guests can help). I wish that all Californians were doing the same.
Evelyn and Lawrence were wonderful hosts. When we arrived, Evelyn gave us lots of great information about where to drink wine and go hiking. We brought a large dog with us, and they were super accommodating and very friendly with him. The location is within walking distance to a lot of great things downtown and the neighborhood is beautiful and quiet. If you are planning on bringing a dog to Santa Barbara, this is honestly such a perfect spot - there is a great park nearby and the room has its own private entrance into the fenced-in backyard. Our hosts were available when needed but gave us plenty of space and privacy - the room and bathroom are very private. Two thumbs up :) PS, be sure to ask Evelyn about the time she met Ansel Adams!
This place is perfectly located and was welcoming and cozy. The hosts were in great communication before, during, and after our stay. Everything was perfect.
Our children who are 9 years apart are in constant contact. Is there a greater reward? Have been with Airbnb for over five years. As 62 and 65 year olds, we are athletic, read, calculate, cook . We eat well but we like our wine also. We love the mountains; at one point of our lives we were avid rock climbers, white water kayakers, and back mountain extreme skiers. We enjoy the nuances of life and also believe in magic. Breathing is part of the magic of life. Also being aware and part of social change helps make magic happen. And we laugh.
