Mulawarman Ubud is arguably the best place to use as a base if you're visiting Bali; if you are looking for culture, comfort, nature and inspiration. Mulawarman is surrounded by most of the things that bring people to Bali - scenic rice fields, small villages, ancient temples, palaces, and amazing restaurants (cheap local Indonesian, raw food, vegan, organic etc.). Our central location in Ubud makes it easy to get to the mountains, beaches, and major towns.

For those who want to discover an "Authentically Balinese" luxury guest-house still preserved from the "tourist invasion" and which, according to the guidebooks, is one of the best places in town, come to Mulawarman. Situated 25 kilometers northeast of Denpasar, Ubud is nestled in the green folds of countryside carpeted with terraced rice fields and carved by deep river gorges. Despite the increase in tourism Ubud conforms the image of being an example of the place where tourism development is harmoniously integrated into the village life.

The Neighborhood

I love my neighborhood because it is quite but, I can easily walk or get a motorbike taxi to go do something. While you're in my neighborhood you should do some yoga at the yoga barn or taksu. Have a massage at one of the many little places....Zen spa is my favorite. Go Antonio Blanco Painting Museum. Of course visit the Ubud Palace go to the temple. Then do some exciting shopping and bargaining at the Ubud Market. Take a balinese cooking class. Have some gelato at Gelato Secrets. Then try to decide where to have dinner.......so many choices so much good food. Where ever you choose to eat don't miss eating at Sari Organic Restaurant in the rice fields this place is great for early sunset dinners and only 10-15min walk from Mulawarman. No Car access to Sari Organic you must walk or motorbike, amazing walk through the rice fields.
You have to go to Monkey forest and visit all the monkeys and please have someone in your group buy bananas. Now get the camera ready because it's going to be funny or a little scary depending on how much you like monkeys running to you and jumping all over you! Also only a 10minute walk from your room is the very hot and very cold baths with regular pool and sauna at the tjampuhan hotel that you can use for a small fee around $7 for the day. Walk down Jalan Monkey forest , that is the name of the main shopping road and there are a lot of restaurants, massages, and shopping on this road.

  • Hidden away beside a river is this lovely little b n b where you are made to feel part of the family. Ibu Wayan is a warm, welcoming hostess who really wants you to treat her place as your place. Her breakfasts are legendary and the dinner she cooked for 4 of us one nights was a 'degustation' of sorts, with many small delicious courses - I felt guilty leaving some but there was just too much too eat! Rather though than staying at #5, I stayed at #3 as there was a mix up over my booking not quite as private as I expected but a beautiful room with a lovely bathroom with dappled light flowing in... beautiful...

  • Mularwarman is a great stay in Ubud. Wayan is one of the most friendly and lovely persons we have ever met and we got a great time with her! She threated us like family members and not as customers with her warm and welcoming smile and we had a lot of Fun. The trip to a traditional balinese Dance night and a diner and her sister was a remarkable evening which we would never forget. The place itself is clean with good ac and a really comfortable bed. The staff is really friendly and can help you a lot - the Text messaging at airbnb is with tracy the "left hand" of wayan who helped us a lot with finding a perfect trip to the gilis. The answers where always quick and perfectly on point. Mularwarman is hidden in the riece fields just 10 min walk to the city of ubud (bring a flashlight as it will get dark on the road!) and perfectly calm and quiet. You wont hear any noise from the city just a lot of birds and such stuff. The breakfast is great (i have to mention the green pancakes cause they are really really good!) and wayan is an awesome cook (try out her cooking class) and a splendid host. We loved the chatting with the other guest (greetz to Lindsay, Shaun an Mary!) and will surely come back on our next trip.

  • Mulawarman Guest house was wonderful. It MADE our stay in Ubud. Truthfully, though, it was Ibu Wayan who made our stay at the Mulawarman comfortable and pleasant.
I must say, at first, being hardened by American lack-of-hospitality, I thought that Wayan was playing the role of a kind, loving, second-mother type. I was wrong. She is genuinely one of the most loving people I have ever met…and it shows. She is the reason why I would recommend staying here, her love and hospitality actually permeated the overall experience we had in Ubud, making me sad to leave.

The room: Part of the way through our stay, we were upgraded to a bigger room that did not have tenants currently booked. That made a big difference in our overall satisfaction. What I will say for the rooms are that they both met our standards, but, if possible, you want to book the larger rooms…they are much worth the slight increase in price…they have a lot more room, and include a bathtub.

But seriously, I am SO HAPPY we stayed here. Wayan was a gracious hostess, offering us smoothies upon arrival, and talking with us about the guesthouse. Also, we took in a traditional fire dance performance across town-- Wayan's husband and one of the young men that works at the guesthouse drove us, free of charge, to the location. We chose to walk back, giving us a chance to grab some nighttime gelato on the main strip.

At the guesthouse there was a wonderful balance between privacy and communal living. The shared outdoor kitchen area is great for talking to other guests, particularly at breakfast.

Oh, and SPEAKING OF BREAKFAST, this was my favorite perk of Mulawarman….Ibu Wayan and the staff serve you tea or bali coffee, water, a large plate of fresh cut fruit, and a breakfast entree each day. Her green banana pancake is TO DIE FOR! It rocked my world.

I also took a cooking class from her, wherein she tought me how to make three traditional dinner dishes for myself and my fiancee---from the freshest ingredients I've ever used (Wayan actually picked one of the ingredients from the garden halfway through the preparation!). The dinner was fun to make, I wrote down the recipes, and I plan on making the dishes I learned for my family when I get back home. My fiancee also said that it was the best meal we had in Ubud.

Overall, great experience, highly recommended---I was sad to leave :(

  • My stay at Mulawarman was fantastic - of all the places I have stayed during my trip it was the best, by far. Ibu Wayan and her staff are friendly and always available to help. Breakfast is absolutely delicious - a huge plate of fresh fruit and banana pancakes (or you can choose eggs and toast but go for the pancakes! You won't regret it). The place is just far enough from the main street to be quiet and peaceful, yet still easily accessible from town. I am returning to stay at Mulawarman for a night or two next week before departing Indonesia and am really looking forward to it!

  • Had a great stay at Mulawarman.. Was greeted warmly by Ibu Wayan and delicious fried bananas upon arrival in the late evening..Room was clean with comfortable bed. It is a great hideaway from the main road but still close to ubud centre. Took the cooking class with Ibu Wayan and it was a great experience from buying the ingredients at the market to the learning of making our own balinese meal.

  • First and foremost, Ibu Wayan upholds her expressed philosophy that Muluwarman is your home, and that you are like family during your stay.

Her staff met us along the road to help us carry our bags along the creek to the home stay. We were welcomed with complementary fresh juice and coffee upon arrival (and throughout our stay). And Ibu Wayan herself prepared a delightful and generous meal in celebration of or friend's birthday (she went so far as to pick up a birthday cake for us!).

The room was tidy and welcoming, and we felt cozy both in or room as well as in the garden sit-down area. The atmosphere is very serene.

Though the home stay is at the edge of main street (a bit of a walk - 15-30 minutes - from where the main activity in Ubud is), it has the great advantage of being asking the river as well as the extremely beautiful rice terrace. Several mornings I jogged just behind the home stay, entering a several-kilometer scenic path through the green paddies. A gem spot to watch sunset above Ubud, too.

Being that the home stay is amidst so much nature and greenery, it is expected that the space will be shared with a few extra critters, not nothing more than ants and mosquitoes. But not to fret, mosquito spray is in ample supply.

Ibu Wayan and the peaceful and aesthetically pleasant atmosphere of Muluwarman made our stay really delightful.
