The Neighborhood

SECURITY:
I live within a 1/2 mile from two (2) police stations...one is a police training station.

At ANY given time, you will see several police patrols going up and down the street, to and from the station. There is only so much precaution a traveller can take, but its always nice to know that protection is just AT the corner. So be safe! For those who need additional security, feel free to take advantage of my night time free shuttle from the nearest train stop!

I will admit, there are better areas in Chicago but none will be as memorable as your stay here! If you are looking for a posh, well-to-do area, DO NOT BOOK HERE! hehehe This is an urban inner city community that has undergone nice redevelopment due to the brand new college recently built (but has some work to be done). I live near a beautiful massive park with a full running track, community center /swimming and children's playground.

  • My time here was AMAZING. Probably the highlight of my trip - and she told me I was there at a boring time!

This is not your typical Airbnb experience. Staying with Annie is more like temporarily entering a family. She's the anchor, then there are regulars, then random drop-ins like me who get adopted for a few days.

As people say, staying here/in this neighborhood might take you outside your comfort zone. But Annie takes care of her people. When I was out late (OK, all night) she texted around 1:30 to ask if I needed to be picked up. I got back in the morning and plopped my hungover butt down in a big comfy chair in the living room to chit-chat with Annie and another regular till I was ready for the day. And the day before, I watched Annie talk another guest through setting up a website for his awesome photography.

Basically, she's like the really awesome aunt you never had. If the most important thing about your accommodations is that there's no dust in the corner, you should check into the Fairmont. Otherwise, stay with Annie and you'll have an awesome time. I'm already scheming how I can make time for another trip back.

  • Very close to the public transportation (bus, train, and taxis come 24/7) and easy access to major roads to navigate the windy city.. The house is lovely and close to schools and parks (feel safe as plenty of cops are on duty patrolling). The area is quiet and I felt very safe. The host provides everything you need to enjoy your stay. The kitchen and washer/dryer were wonderful to have. With the length of my stay and the number of ppl there it's no wonder it is a tourist trap- not to jump into a great deal., This rental made perfect sense as I was not limited to a "locked room" and eating out every meal. Stay here! You won't regret it!

  • My stay here was very enjoyable. The host is very nice and welcomed me into her home for my 6 week stay. There are lots of beds here so you'll get a chance to meet a lot of fun, interesting people.

  • The experience here redefined my comfort zone. The house is great. It's old and being rehabbed and I liked both the old and the rehab. It's down right eclectic, and so are the people. They come from all over and I loved meeting everyone. Annie is an incredible host with an infectious laugh. She really goes above and beyond for her guests. Remember, it's a lot of people in a small house so it's a two way street, and Annie is very clear and everything works. The neighborhood can be uncomfortable if you are a person that lives in fear or with stereotypes. Keep your head up and smile and you'll come across many human beings inside the house and out who will smile back. I actually fell in love with the energy of the neighborhood. And the price! Damn straight, I recommend it.

  • Nonya was verry helpful and friendly! The guests in the house was international and nice. The sleeprooms are a litlle messy. The kitchen and the bathrooms are ok. The price is cheap. The district is not centrally, and in the night not save, but in the house we felt us sure! Wenn we go out, Nonya pic up us from the trainstation.

  • Very thankful to Nonya for giving us the opportunity to make new living experiences!! It felt so peaceful and poetic there... Guess the host has something to do with it ;-)
    Nonya, à bientôt!

  • She is wonderful host ! She is very helpful and kindness! To stay at her place is so funny and really nice ! When I come back to Chicago, I will stay again!

    June 2013
  • Meeting Nonya and having her share her home, stories and smile was the best damn time I could ask for. Besides people being afraid of the looks of the area, I met only nice, pleasant individuals. If you're French you probably won't like it, but anyone looking for a real Chicago experience this is the place to be.

  • After nearly two months renting private rooms through AirBnB, I'm glad I finally made it to Annie's melting pot. In fact, I think that her approach to hosting guests should be the new standard for AirBnB listings. Every major city around the world should have at least one such listing.

In just the first week of staying here I've made meaningful connections with a number of great people: artists, dancers, photographers, entrepreneurs, journalists, explorers, chefs. I've even added a few more tasty, simple to make dishes to my personal cookbook.

Another great feature of this location is that you can easily get to any part of Chicago in less than an hour by train and/or bus.

About
I Love Travelers, traveling and everything in between. Born and raised in Chicago, I became an avid traveller and barter enthusiast. I've been travelling for 20 years and could easily write my own book on travelling on a budget. I PRIDE myself on the deals I would obtain. A week in Ireland, rental of two 3 bedroom entire homes for $45! FOUR Chicago Bull playoff games during the Michael Jordan Era included 4th row floor seats, box seats...$100 total! Travelled europe thru 15 countries for $500 including accommodations and food...for a 3 month period! And this was BEFORE Airbnb. I can go on. I'm geeked when I find a deal and become just plain silly with happiness at an unbelievable deal. Even upon confirmation, my website for my guests are filled with free and things to do for CRAZY CHEAP. 'Spend like a spencer, but live like a king!' Aside from that, my mother was a big enthusiast in education. As the oldest of nine (9), I can tell you that we were not short on activities. Piano lessons on Saturday AND an hour a day, per child of piano practice since 4!; tennis on Sunday, knitting lessons on Tuesday and Thursday, sewing lessons on Wednesday and swim classes on Friday. And tha'ts not including the architectural/drafting studies and woodshop classes that consumed my teenage years in addition. If you are good, I can definately knit you a sweater with a nice cable stitch! My piano teacher was Professor Zilner Randolph for over 15 years. If you don't know who he is, perhaps you heard of a musician called Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington? He was Louis Armstrong's musical director, played trumpet on a number of Armstrong's recordings and composed the tune "Old Man Moses'. He also played with Carroll Dickerson and Dave Peyton in the middle of the decade, and led his own Chicago band later in the 1930s. He was an arranger for Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, and others. Six of my siblings and I were his students for over 15 years.. In fact, one of my brothers, if you wish to look him up for a concert near you, is a worldwide professional jazz pianist and a graduate of Berkley College, with several releases. As for me, I became sidetracked with travel. If you are ever in South Korea, Ecuador, or Florida, you will probably run into five of my sisters/brothers and their familiies. Say hello for me! My home was built in 1875. So you will find some old and new features within. I'm always in construction to some degree within. Thanks to airbnb, I have been able to complete at least 75% of the renovations. Still have much to do. I feel everyone should open their minds to new things, cultural experiences and diversity. Only then can you understand people thru their eyes and not some narrow minded media coverage. By letting their experience be your experience will help you better understand people in a true and raw sense. That's why I simply love Airbnb. It places you in parts of the world where you probably wouldn't have gone but always wanted to go to get that 'local' feel with a local and trusted host. Since I don't travel as much as I used to....Let your experience be my experience! I look forward to meeting you.
