About This Listing
Two bedroom cottage with big porch fronting ponds & rice field. Perfect for experiencing laid back countryside living. It is 10min walk to Honda Bay's longest beach, 50 minutes from underground river and the city, and accessible via public transport.
The house's location is on an elevated ground overlooking a rice field situated on the edge of a private mini forest. It is made of concrete foundation and the walls are a mixture of wood and concrete while the inner walls are a mixture of concrete and native bamboo materials. The bathroom has tiled floor and walls. The bedrooms and kitchen floors are tiled, while the dining area and porch have wooden floors. The bedrooms have screened windows and clear glass louvers that can be opened and closed to regulate room temperature. Although we do not offer AC, the place is breezy and surrounded by greenery.
In front of the house are four ponds stocked with fish that you can catch if you fancy fishing a little bit. Wildlife abounds in the mini forest. Birds, monitor lizards, and freshwater turtles are a common sight. We have our own water system and the house has plumbing and water supply. We are still landscaping some areas of the property but overall, its a peaceful little place where you can relax and enjoy, either alone or with a small group of close friends and family members. The place is ideal for 2-4 people, but you can squeeze up to six persons using tents. Unless specified during your booking inquiries, we only offer one of the two bedrooms to accommodate the first two guests (i.e. you and your friend, spouse, or sibling will share a queen sized bed). However, for booking with three to four guests, both bedrooms will be available. For bookings of more than four persons, kindly inquire with us for special arrangements with your group.
You may rent motorbike to explore the neighborhood and nearby tourist attractions. You will have access to all cooking and dining utensils if you wish to cook your own food, provided that you take good care and clean it after use. We also have an in house canteen if you would prefer home cooked meals. We provide complimentary drinking water (purified water).
Interaction with Guests
I travel often and if I am not in the house during your stay, my brother and his wife will be there to assist you with your needs. If I am not travelling, I will be in the house during your arrival to orient you with the house rules. During your stay, I will stay in another house about 40 meters uphill from you and I will be available most of the time in case you need any assistance.
The neighborhood is peaceful and friendly. We are a fishing and farming community. The nearby beach is usually empty save for some local fisherfolks that use the area for subsistence fishing. It is usually great for early morning walks. There are also numerous convenient stores where you can get pretty much everything, from veges, condiments, canned goods and even chicken. We are midway between underground river and Honda Bay and ideal for people who wanted to experience and get acquainted with a more laid back lifestyle in the rural villages of Palawan (no night life here except if you go to the nearby resort). Try catching your own dinner using traditional fishing gears, or experience wading in ricefields and plant rice with the local farmers. Experience Island Hopping in Honda Bay, visit the Underground River, or trek to water falls and caves during your stay.
Motorbike for rent is available on site. All sorts of public transport (jeepneys to AC van and buses) going between Puerto Princesa City and El Nido ply the route between 6am-8pm, beyond that, there maybe 3 to 4 trips available. Reservations can be made for trips from Puerto Princesa to El Nido. Fare is between 50-84 pesos to go to my place from the town center of Puerto Princesa. From the airport, you can hire a tricycle to take you to the public transport terminal where you take a northbound bus (El Nido or Taytay) and get off at my place (will send you a more detailed instruction upon booking). I suggest taking the Roro or Cherry Bus since they offer comfortable seating. I can also pick you up from the airport as long as you make arrangements prior your arrival. If you have your own vehicle, free parking space is also available.
Other Things to Note
We offer assistance on tours to Honda Bay Island Hopping, Underground River, hiking to waterfalls, and pretty much anything beyond and between at a cheaper rate. There are local stores (sari-sari stores) that offer most of the stuffs you find in convenient stores (at cheaper price). There are also several fully serviced beach resorts (one walking distance from my house (1km away) where you can use swimming pool and other facilities. There is a small canteen owned by my brother just uphill of the house. It only serves student meals and open only on school days for lunch. However, you can preorder meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and have it served to you during your stay. Meals use mostly fresh ingredients from the village and from our own vegetable garden.
Do take care of the entire property and keep its cleanliness during your stay. We are a NO Smoking facility and we appreciate your observance of that. No illegal drugs or weeds, you might end up staying in Palawan jail without bail option. All guests must present valid ID upon check in. Don't get drunk and cause trouble to yourself, the property, and the neighborhood. Lastly, please respect local culture, customs and traditions.
We felt welcome. The food that Doods sister-in-law made was delicious (they have the neighboring cabin. The neighborhood is very rural and quiet. The cabin is in good shape and the appliances worked quite well. We were there during the hot season so the electricity cut off from the power station two to three times a day for a few hours at a time. I suspect during any month but April this might not happen.
I would say that this is an ideal place to get away from the hub-bub and stress of city life and just relax. We appreciated Raymond and Doods concern the entire time as to our comfort.
I absolutely loved my stay at Doods' place. This house thinks of everything when it comes to making your stay comfortable and restful. you can even try cooking on your own using all the available utensils and cookwares in the house. So much great books that you can read -- get fascinated about life and incredible places. It was definitely beautiful and a great 'staycation' to take your family. Well worth the money! If you are looking for quality come to Doods' place.
Doods' cottage is a nice alternative to hotels and resorts - and good stop-over before proceeding to el nido (by land).
Ideal for relax travelers.
A home away from home.
Doods arranged for his brother to pick us up from the airport which was great.
Doods works in town so was not at the house to greet us but his other brother, living behind his house, was there and were made to feel very welcome.
The place was exactly as described and his brother cooked our food every day, fresh and 5 starr quality. In fact, one of our days we were going to eat out but decided we would rather eat back at Doods house.
We would deffinately go back even when we travel to the US, it is a good place to 'stop over'. Highly recommend.
Before we arrived Doods had our directions via email that were easy to follow. From stepping off the bus until we left, everything was handled for us. His family took care of our meals and they exceeded our expectations. Our tour was all taken care of, and we are grateful for the assistance. The home was perfect for getting a local feel on our trip through Palawan.
We had a wonderful time in this house. The view every morning was just great. I can still imagine myself sipping coffee at 6am outside with that cool breeze..That was priceless for me. We can't thank you enough Doods for making our stay comfortable and for arranging our transpo..
I like to cook and I must say this house have better kitchen utensils than our previous accommodations..
It is a quick walk to the beach and we had drinks once at a nearby resort.
Doods is "The Dude!" My boyfriend and I had originally booked two nights here but disappointingly realized we needed to take an overnight bus to El Nido as we were crunched for time on our Palawan trip. Doods helped us with not just booking that bus, but he boarded that bus from Puerto Princesa and alongside his brother's help, he called us as he was a few stops away to make sure we weren't waiting outside too long -- the bus stops right in front of his house! Not only that, but I managed to leave my passport at his place and he swiftly arranged the safe and quick delivery of it within 24 hours of just leaving his place. Stand-up guy, very friendly and personable, as well as resourceful, intelligent, and super helpful. He answered every question and was very easy to communicate with in regards to any concerns or general tourist inquiries, even offering to make any necessary arrangements and reservations.
His home is absolutely beautiful. If you're looking for a unique, rustic, and authentically local experience, away from the tourist and resort-ridden Puerto Princesa... This is your new home. Here, about an hour van ride from PP lies soothing peace, warm comfort, and genuine Filipino hospitality in the form of a cute cottage sitting in the middle of a rice field. Accommodations are spacious, clean, and Doods even offered us a stocked pantry/refrigerator for our own raving appetites! In addition, his sister-in-law is an awesome cook and we agreed it was some of the best food we had during our entire trip in the Philippines. Wifi was decent, but don't expect anything super fast, but good to get some work done if needed.
During the day we rented their motorbike for just 600 pesos (where he graciously gave us a discount after) to drive through the countryside to our Underground River tour -- A ride most people just take a shared tourist van for. His brother answered all our questions about the bike, as well as gave us the proper directions, and made sure we were comfortable before seeing us drive off. In addition, just a short walk away is a secluded beach, part of Honda Bay, and across the street are a couple of Sari-Sari's (roadside market stands) ran by the friendliest local families. There we picked up some cheap San Miguel's and snacks to eat on the porch whilst watching the beautiful sunset.
I cannot say enough great things about Doods, the Matilliano family, and the wonderful hospitality and accommodations he had prepared for us. I would strongly recommend his home to anyone looking for peace, with a little bit of adventure and a good dose of local flair. Thanks so much for everything! I can't wait to come back soon :)
