My boyfriend and I were both drawn to Veronica's cabins since we are Canadians of caribbean heritage. Our goal was to explore afro-costa rican culture and compare it to our own. This was all discussed in our initial messages with the renter prior to booking. We arrived on a Friday morning for 2 nights stay. Perfect location, steps off of the main road. We were greeted by a volunteer or worker named Brenda. She showed us our quarters which were upgraded due to lack of bookings so it enabled us to have a bathroom in our room. She told us that Veronica was away for the week but her daughter is here, who will eventually take over the business. We rented bikes to ride to the varying beaches in the area. As we were leaving, the daughter Shantala arrived. She welcomed us with warm greetings. That night, we noticed that our cabin door was short which left an opening above it that was not screened off like all of the other windows were therefore mosquitoes were able to enter. Although we had mosquito nets, we found ourselves waking up throughout the night to make sure it was covering us properly. I got the most bites in those two nights in my whole stay in CR. The next morning we went to the front desk however no one was present. Shantala eventually came out of their home after we knocked stating that they do not offer services on saturdays. This info was not indicated in the description of the rental. So we did not have our costa rican breakfast that we were looking forward to, nor was she able to help us plan tours or available to answer basic questions about transportation in the area or costa rican culture. As we walked back to our cabin in dismay, we stumbled upon Brenda. She was willing to provide us with details on how to get to Cahuita. We booked a breakfast for the following day with her. After a day of exploration we came back to find Shantala's husband greeting us. We confirmed the breakfast with him however Shantala sounded reluctant, asking us what time we would like it for, although it is supposed to be daily at 8h30 (she was saying this from inside the house while he stood outside with us). As for the room, when the person above us flushed, there would be bubbling and sometimes a return in our toilet. A neighbour played loud music 24/7: a mix between spanish music, reggaeton, calypso, and soca. That tranquil stay that they offered definitely did not materialize. The breakfast the next morning was fantastic! A real authentic, delectable Costa Rican meal. Shantala can really cook but we were hoping that she would dine with us or engage at least in coversation. All that being said, what was promised was not delivered. We felt like a burden more than anything. Thank goodness for Brenda with her kind heart.

my name is Terry, i just stayed at Veronica's Place for 10 days. scheduled for 2 days & as soon as i met Shantalla, [ ?] Veronicas daughter who will be running the B & B in the future, i believe, and saw my accommodations i asked to extend a couple more days. these are just very very nice people who try extremely hard to make your stay most enjoyable. Veronica had me sample different juices she prepares daily. in the evening, i had the pleasure of warm baked banana bread a couple of times. this is a family friendly place that treats you like an extended member of the family.. highly, highly recommend you give them a try!!!! the other staff are very friendly, knowledgeable, & work hard at helping you with any questions that arise.. but the best part of my stay was knowing my belongings were safe when left behind, that this was not a "party house" and in fact it is the opposite. they have families and friends stopping by with children that added to the comfort of being in their home. also, i heard much laughter and singing from the kitchen and family quarters.. A very warm and pleasant atmosphere !!!!

Shantala and her family were very welcoming and provided a lot of useful info - Veronica's Place offers a great selection of activities. My room (exactly as shown in the pic) was clean and comfortable and Veronica's Place is in a great location. It's on a side street jst off the main street so it's peaceful but just minutes away from the beach, bars and shops. Can't wait to return!

My name is Veronica . I am married and have five kids who are now grown up. We grew up in a little town at the Caribbean Coast in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. My descendants and family are Jamaican. We are very proud of our culture.

I grew up in a Christian family were I learned about natural healing and that we need to take care of our mind, body, soul and we need to find the balance between the three of them.

My grandparents and parents were naturalists, it means that they always worked with plants and herbs. When somebody is sick or has an allergy, they cured them with their knowledge of the plants, trees and herbs. They passed it on to us and my husband and I continue to pass our home remedies ( like fresh herbs, fruit and vegetables) to our children and to other people who wants to change their lives in a healthy way.

All these are my inspiration along with the bible and nature that show me that my body is the temple of the holy spirit were God abides.
The sun , the water, the air, exercise, making time and the trust of God are the law of nature.

My husband and I still live in this small town in Puerto Viejo where everybody knows us and where we do community service for other people.

We offer short and long term accommodations. We have 3 family-size cabinas, and 3 private rooms in our house. The cabinas all have private bathrooms and a shared kitchen, and the rooms in the house are with shared bathroom, kitchen, and living room.

We also offer Home Remedies with our natural products, Caribbean Cooking Classes, consulting about health, Spanish lessons, volunteer projects.
