We offer 2-4 rooms on room and breakfast or rent the whole house (10 beds) on a self-catering basis. Our beautiful period Victorian house stands just above the sea in Bonchurch, south coast. Lawn slopes down to just above the sea. Swimming pool in July/August.

The Space

The situation of our house is so very special with such amazing sea-views. On the south side in front of the sitting and dining rooms is a veranda which is protected from the south westerly winds. We can often have breakfast out there even in February!

From our bedrooms with sea-view you can hear the waves crashing on the beach if you sleep with the window ajar!

If you book on a room and breakfast basis we offer breakfast in our beautiful dining room, furnished with antiques. Since none of our bedrooms have TV you can watch TV from 6 pm in our large sitting room facing the sea.

Our best 2 bedrooms both face over the garden to the sea.
Neither of them has an en suite bathroom however. We offer you exclusive use of the bathroom. However if you are booking more than one room and you know each other well enough to be prepared to share the family bathroom together then we would accept your booking on that basis.
Otherwise maybe consider booking the whole house with all 4 bedrooms on a self catering basis. You can even add our small ground floor apartment to make a 5th bedroom and that gives you the additional shower room of the apartment downstairs.

Bedrooms in the main house
Room 1: A huge south facing room with a pair of twin beds which can also be zipped together to make a super king bed. So please let us know how you would like it! Large wardrobe. Bedside tables. Sofa (which can convert to a sofa-bed to sleep one additional person) and coffee table.
Chest of drawers.

Room 2: Again a large double room (but not as large as room 1) with a wrought iron bedstead and king mattress. Large chest of drawers. Bedside lockers. Hexagonal low table. Antique easy chair.

From both of the above rooms it is about 15 paces (including 3 steps) to the bathroom along the hall.

We have another 2 bedrooms which we do not often let except when the house is let as a whole:

Room 3: With king size wooden sleigh bed with a lovely firm mattress. 2 bedside lockers. Chest of drawers. View over the front of the house but no sea-view.

Room 4: Twin-triple room ideal for children. This room is at the side of the house with no particular views except trees. But no brick wall and not overlooked in any way. Its just not as special as our rooms with seaview! There are 2 single beds in this room and one of them has an additional pull-out bed underneath for a 3rd child.

Again these 2 rooms use the main family bathroom.

Family bathroom has a large corner bath-tub, bidet, hand-basin and also a shower unit.

Walking: You have access to many miles of coastal walks literally right from the bottom of the drive or you can walk in the opposite direction along the esplanade to Ventnor Bay and haven or further still to Steephill Cove.

Beaches: Bonchurch beach is a couple of minutes walk from the end of the drive. This is a wonderfully undeveloped beach - shingle and stones at the top, sand lower down at mid and low tide. Small rocky pools and seaweed. No ice-cream vans, no sun-beds or umbrellas no shops full of tourist tat and totally uncommercialised !!

Ventnor beach has more sand but all of the above! Both are a far cry from the bucket and spade brigade of the east coast of the island.

Steephill Cove - not to be missed. It is a 10 minute drive from our house or a 30-40 minute walk along the sea front. This little cove has no road down to it and so remains unspoilt. There is just one cafe and a crab and lobster restaurant. No beach facilities but a lovely sandy cove that reminds you of the lobster coves in Maine, USA. Rock pools abound as do children with fishing nets and of course the sand-castles!

Bonchurch village features a wildlife pond, the sophisticated Pond Café and the charismatic Bonchurch Inn . Neither to be missed during your stay. Fine dining at the Pond and really good pub-grub with an Italian flavour at the Pub.

A short walk away along the Esplanade is the small town of Ventnor which offers stylish Victorian buildings, a lovely sandy/fine shingle beach, the Ventnor Fishery for the catch of the day, a main shopping street, parks and gardens. There is a REAL butcher and a couple of minor supermarkets.

Also of interest is the Ventnor Heritage Museum, as well as a Museum on nautical history.

In Ventnor (our nearest small town - 15 mins walk along the esplade) sport and leisure are varied and include cricket grounds with the new Cricket Academy, golf courses, Pitch & Putt courses, tennis courts and a variety of children’s playgrounds.

Other local places of interest include the Isle of Wight Coastal Visitors Centre, St. Boniface Church, the Rew Down Local Nature Reserve and St Boniface Down, which is the highest point on the Isle of Wight and also where Ventnor’s Radar Station is situated. The Isle of Wight coastal path is a 65 mile (105km) long trail around the island, which follows the coastline as closely as possible, going right past Dolphins.

Cycling on the south coast of the island is excellent with many tiny little roads and villages to explore, lots of hills to climb and descend and sea-views galore. You can set off from the end of our drive.

Guest Access

Room and breakfast guests have access to their bedrooms through our spacious hall lined with bookcases of fascinating old books - family heirlooms! Breakfast is taken in our beautiful and very stylish dining room at the huge mahogany table.

If you rent the whole house with 8-10 beds on a self-catering basis then you also have access to the sitting room which opens to the south facing veranda and terrace and the lawn sloping down to the Shore Road just yards from the sea. In high summer if you rent the whole house during July and August you have access to our outdoor heated swimming pool.

Interaction with Guests

When you book a room on a room and breakfast basis I will cook your breakfast and hopefully have the chance to talk with you afterwards. Please let me know what you would like to eat: eggs and bacon etc. ??

You will notice from my profile that I am a qualified English teacher. So if English is not your native tongue I am happy to give English lessons for a fee of £30 per hour !!

Obviously if you rent the whole house on a self-catering basis then I would not be living there but would meet you with the keys and show you how the whole place works.

  • We had a wonderful time staying at Dolphins. The house is spacious and relaxing and Stephen and Christine were the perfect hosts. We could literally look out onto sea from our bed and the delicious breakfast they cooked us set us up for the whole day. There are some lovely walks along the sea front and great places to eat in Ventnor. We'll be back again!

I am a landscape photgrapher specialising in large scale images of the Alps and mountain scenery around the world. I also have a large quantity of images of the Isle of Wight as well as South America and the Himalayas. You will find my framed pictures hung all round the house and also in the ground floor apartment! If you would like to look at my website why not click on my Stephen Lee Mountain Photography website. I recently qualified as a CELTA English language teacher and have been busy teaching at a language college this summer. So if English is not your native tongue and you would like to improve your English - maybe we could combine some one to one lessons with your stay on the Isle of Wight ! I am a keen skier and mountaineer but also a very keen cyclist. I am teaching myself to play the guitar and starting to write my own songs! I am a new host with airbnb so am hoping that this system works well for us. I have been letting the main house with 4 bedrooms for several years now so have plenty of experience in hosting guests.
