  • We often rent houses while traveling through Ecuador and this was one of the best. Located in a great area to get to and from some of the best places to visit in Cuenca. Marcelo's family lives close by and are very friendly and attentive. Cable and wireless internet are great perks to this property.

  • The apartment is well located in a residential area. Laundry can be done easily nearby (turn right out of the door to Guayas and then turn left to the Lavanderia at the corner). The apartment is true to the photos on AirBnb - large, bright, and airy. It has a security system and an outside gate.
Marcelo's family are responsive to concerns. After the volcano nearby brought dust all over, they were quick to clean it all up.
As for soundproofing, yes, you do hear people upstairs mostly in the entry and stairs. But then again, we are city folks and it wasn't that bad. Hot water was always available in the shower and there were guests upstairs.
The kitchen lacks some good pans, but this can be easily remedied. We didn't have enought towels at first, but requested a change and it was not problem.
We loved the area - cross the river and walk up the stairs straight and you arrive at the modern art museum and San Sebas cafe. A good restaurant is at the corner (Vinoteca). We got bread each morning at a little shop near the church. A pharmacy is nearby for essentials. 2$ taxi to the old centre but it is also walkable.

All is all. We enjoyed our stay, loved the space, and the location.

  • We stayed in the 1st floor apartment for one week. The apartment is quite comfortable. It looks just like the photos. The location was great for us - it's an easy 15 min walk to the central area, and we found the neighborhood quiet and safe. The kitchen was a tad sparse, though we were able to cook all our meals fairly easily. It's true that you can hear a lot of noise from the 2nd floor, but we didn't find it bothersome. The Internet really only worked in the living room, and there is no phone in the apartment, but otherwise we were perfectly happy. Marcelo was generally quick to respond to emails, and his family in Cuenca was very nice!

  • We stayed in the1st floor apartment for almost 3 wks. Overall the place was very good. It’s in a great location near downtown. It’s half a block from a rode with many cabs to take and short enough to walk to El Centro and tiendas. It’s mostly a quiet neighborhood, though there is a dog that barks all night on the property behind the apartment and there is a colegio next door where young people have noisy gatherings on the weekend. Marcelo told me it was a quiet, family neighborhood before we went—that was true, relatively. As my wife told me, “It’s South America.” If you’re in an area with people expect noise no matter how “quiet” the area.
The apartment looks nice and it was good having a kitchen and two rooms for just a little more money than a good hotel. The place has internet and cable, and an alarm system and fence. The alarm isn’t necessary, though. We had some issues, but the owners were very easy to work with. They tried very hard to make our stay nice. Marcelo has family one street over and they were available to help us, and even let me use their cell phone once. My son stupidly closed our locked room once, locking us out. Marcelo’s family had the door opened within a couple of hours! I had some complaints, and notified Marcelo while there. He mostly addressed them for us. The internet router is in the other apartment, so the internet signal for the first floor apartment is kind of weak. We kept losing connection b/c something wrong with the router, but Marcelo said he would have it fixed and in the meantime his family gave us the key for the 2nd floor apartment so we could reset the router when the internet messed up. That worked for us.We had hot water, but if there’s people staying upstairs you’ll have a hard time taking a hot shower. 6 ppl can stay upstairs and 4 downstairs. If the place if full that’s a lot of people in one house. And, it’s very noisy when people are upstairs. All sound carries, esp. from the stairs. I can’t complain, though, because when I told Marcelo he prevented anyone else from booking the upstairs for the rest of our stay.
All the above is only to give a heads up, not complain. The complaints I have are regarding the towels, dirtiness, and kitchen utensils. The place was mostly clean and the kitchen is very nice. But the floors, shelves, counters, and cabinets were all very dirty/dusty. We had to buy a mop to clean the floors just to take off our shoes. We also had to buy towels and kitchen stuff because what’s there is not enough for 3 people living there. Those cost about as much as a night’s rent, and it was very upsetting. But we were very comfortable, and grateful that Marcelo’s family members were so kind. I’d stay there again!

  • November 2013, groundfloor apartment.
Marcelo's apartment is located in a nice quiet area and it only takes 15 min. to walk to downtown.
The apartment is very spacious. It is cold inside, but that was quickly taken care of the following day, when Bolivar and Leonar brougth an electric heater.
It will warm up one of the rooms at a time, so remember your warm clothes :-)
And if you get too cold during daytime you can just sit outside and enjoy the sun :-)
There is no coffee-machine, but if you want real coffee you can make it the oldfashioned way using boiled water and filter.
A little tip for the showers: in the shower closest to the kitchen the warm water is the left handle in the shower and in the other shower use the handle on the right.
Marcelo's family members Bolivar and Leonar are so kind and will help you in any way. They even took us to the bus terminal the day we left.
We enjoyed our stay in the large apartment close to the center.
