  • We had really great time in the Toucan Lodge!
It was really magic to sleep surrounded by the jungle and to be at the same time closed to the wonderfull beaches and nice restaurants of Puerto Viejo.
Then, Irene and her husband Wolfgang are really good hosts, abble to communicate their passion for nature!

  • El Tucan provides an authentic jungle experience...the cabinas are tucked away from the main road and Puerto Viejo town; there are no nieghboring properties in the immediate vicinity. However, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo are both easily accessible by public bus or taxi. An easy 15 min walk down the dirt road gets you to local bus stop. Our cabina was extremely clean and comfortable. It is worth noting that there are two bungalows here, each with 2 cabinas. Although you share the front porch with your neighbor, the rooms and bathrooms are very private. If you are looking for your own private bungalow, however, El Tucan does not have this lodging available (I suppose you could rent both rooms of the cabina!). Our cabina was large and very clean with plenty of natural light and ventilation. There were adequate U.S. style electrical outlets for charging phones, etc, and the WiFi worked quite good from our room (excellent reception in the main lodge). The bathroom had very nice newer tile, the shower was large, and the hot water was more than adequate. Irene is extremely helpful as a host. She speaks English, German, and Spanish (and perhaps other languages) fluently. In addition to her two well behaved dogs, ducks, and chickens, she pointed out some of the jungle creatures (including a sloth) and plants that live on the property. Irene also helped us arrange transportation whenever we needed it. For a small charge, she serves an excellent homemade breakfast at the main lodge every morning (highly recommended way to start your day). Irene will take care of you from the beginning of your trip through the very end. She was extremely communicative during booking and prior to arrival. One other bonus of El Tucan was that they will refill your water bottles with safe filtered water as needed. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at El Tucan, and highly recommend it!
Disclaimer: you may not enjoy the stay as much as we did if you are looking for:
    - a private bungalow with no neighbors at all
    - a resort-style hotel experience
    - a short walk to town
    - an environment free of jungle creepy crawlies :)

  • We really enjoyed our stay at El Tucan. It was just what we were looking for - a small place right in the jungle. We really felt immersed in the jungle - from the sounds of birds and monkeys at night to spotting them in the trees during the day. Irene was knowledgeable about the area and always pointed out the animals we were sharing the forest with, and was helpful with advice about what to do in the area.
The cabins were lovely and clean, and the balcony area with hammocks was wonderful to hang out on in the evening.
Puerto Viejo was easily reachable by bike, although the ride at night along the dark and bumpy unpaved road that leads to the lodge from the main road might not be for everyone. We had a good bike light and didn't mind, though.
Overall, we would definitely recommend El Tucan!

  • It has been a wonderful stay at Irenes place. Just the right thing after the long flight and busy days in NYC/San Jose. The beach is close by, while the jungle is right with you. I recommend that once you have woken up, open the doors completely and just enjoy the view. Simply perfect.

  • El Tucan is a gem.

The cabins are clean; there is hot water, wi-fi, breakfast ($5), beer ($2) and the hosts are welcoming, knowledgeable and accommodating.

The cabins are far enough into the jungle to make you feel like you're roughing it, but only a ~5 minute cab ride, ~15 minute bike ride (El Tucan has beach cruises available for hire) and ~30 minute walk from Puerto Viejo.

There's also an abundance of wildlife on the premises. We saw sloths, monkeys, toucans, lizards and tree frogs.

  • super nice lodges in the middle of the forest! we saw sloths, howler monkeys, a tucan and many other birds directly from our terrace. Owners are really nice and you can get breakfast for 5$. Located outside Puerto Viejo its a 6$ taxi ride away but you can also hire bikes to get around.

  • Irene and Wolfgang run a wonderful little Bed and Breakfast. Their cabanas feel like they are deep in the jungle and have big porches perfect for whiling away a morning (and afternoon) reading and looking for wildlife. Irene could not have been more helpful, going as far as purchasing a shuttle bus ticket for me when I had trouble getting the company's website to work. She does everything she can to make life easy for her guests.

  • The hosts were very kind and accomodating, and the rooms were beautiful (with scenery to match).

Overall, a great experience and a very enjoyable stay.

  • El tucan jungle lodge really is a one of a kind jungle-paradise experience. The hosts - irene and wolfgang - are very friendly hosts and as they have been living here for 10years, perfect guides who know everything to do in this area. The lodges are tightly integrated into the jungle, with a small river close by, you're bound to see leguans, kolibris, agudis, racoons, sloth and more. The rooms are spacious and clean - its so comfi its often hard to leave the place ;). Although its in the jungle, the best carribean beach spots are just a 10minute walk away. If you are looking for a relaxed, eco-friendly stay, I can only but highly recommend el tucan. Thx wolfgang and irene for making us feel at home :)

My husband Wolfgang and I had worked for development agencies in Latin America and Africa for many years before we settled down in our paradise 10years ago. We are both nature lovers and enjoy showing the flora and fauna in the surroundings to our guests.
