El Tucán Jungle Lodge is a paradise for bird lovers and people who want to enjoy the tropical flora and fauna in a relaxed atmosphere

The space

What sets us apart from other accommodation is the immediate proximity to nature: the bungalows are located in the middle of the jungle and faults, toucans, iguanas and colorful butterflies are often to be discovered from the hammock.
We offer you living in stylish wooden bungalows on the banks of the Rio Caño Negro surrounded by the incomparable tranquility of nature. Our cozy rooms (4m x 4m) are equipped with one or two double beds, have ceiling fan, mosquito net and private bathroom. They have a spacious terrace with a hammock, table and chairs and a view of the river.

Our El Tucán Jungle Lodge is located in Cocles, 4 km from Puerto Viejo, 1 km off the main road. The 2-hectare grounds and the surrounding area are ideal for walks and explorations, where you can discover brooks, parrots, river turtles and colorful frogs.

But also the "civilization" is within reach: from all rooms you have WLAN access. A well-stocked supermarket is 1 km away and several restaurants are within 1-2 km. .

Guests arriving by car are free to use bicycles ($ 6 per day). There is a regular bus service to the surrounding area and to San José. We can also order a taxi at any time. The beach is reachable by bike in a few minutes.

Irene and Wolfgang are fantastic hosts. Their place is in the forest by a stream of water and there is wildlife around the house. The room was exceptionally clean. There is hot water, and breakfast was delicious with a calming view. Irene even helped us book our next stay. She is very knowledgable of the surrounding area and will show you where the wildlife lives! I wish we could have stayed longer. It just means we will be back next time.

Irene's place is out of the way of the hustle and bustle of Puerto Viajó. It is quiet and peaceful with the wonderful sounds of wildlife to lull you to sleep at night. The accommodations are rustic yet very clean and tidy. We really enjoyed our stay :)

We loved stay here. It was a bit farther out of town and away from the beach than we thought it would be. But being in the middle of the jungle with all kinds of animals around made up for it. Irene was a very hospitable host, and was very helpful with all of our questions.

We very much enjoyed our stay here. It was nice to stay off the beaten path and get to see so many animals our first few days (sloth, iguana, agouti, and many colorful birds.) we would happily stay here again.

Irene was a very accommodating host. The room was as advertised, and very spacious. The location was perfect for us to head into town, but far enough away not to be in the constant traffic jam that happens there. Irene even showed us a few animals including two sloths!

Irene's property is absolutely beautiful. I awoke to monkeys moving through the cheers. Irene and her husband are very accommodating and offer breakfast on site. The location is tucked away and cozy, but still very close to the beach. I recommend everyone experience the hospitality at El Tucan Lodge.

My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of staying at Toucan Lodge for 3 nights during our stay in Costa Rica. Not only is their property gorgeous, Irene and Wolfgang were some of the most hospitable people we encountered in our travel. They were extremely accommodating and we felt like we were at home the whole stay. We kept hearing foreign sounds in the lodge's "backyard" (literally the jungle) that we would describe to Irene. She would always pull out one of her Costa Rica books and look up what they were/describe them in further detail, which was amazing for us. :) They have bikes for rent as well as snorkel gear/hammocks/breakfast/community fridge/daily room cleaning. There is also a convenience store within a 15 minute walk from the lodge. One day the bikes were rented and we wanted to hang on one of the beautiful beaches in the area. When we were about to take off, Wolfgang told us he was driving that way and dropped us at the beach! Above and beyond. They have been in their location for 12 years and are pros at the surrounding area. I seriously can not say nicer things about them! If you are in the Puerto Viejo region, do yourself a favor and stay here. You will not regret it.

My husband Wolfgang and I had worked for development agencies in Latin America and Africa for many years before we settled down in our paradise in 2003. We are both nature lovers and enjoy showing the flora and fauna in the surroundings to our guests.
