A bright, comfortable, private downstairs garden hideaway in a quiet residential area of South Park with canyon and mountain views and a large yard with patio dining area. Near downtown and parks. Walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops, stores.
Your entrance is through a gate next to the house which leads down stairs to the yard and a few more steps to your separate apartment. Guests will have access to their own umbrella-covered patio table and chairs for outdoor dining as well as a pergola with comfortable seating for relaxing and enjoying the canyon view and cool afternoon breezes. The large, completely fenced yard is perfect if you're traveling with your clean and well-behaved dog. Laundry facilities are available, upon request, for longer stays..
This is a residential neighborhood with a very friendly community of neighbors. A ten-minute brisk walk takes you to the corner of 30th and Beech Streets where you will find Grant's gourmet grocery and deli, the Ginseng Yoga studio, Hamilton's Pub, Buona Forchetta Italian restaurant, the Alchemy Restaurant, plus some small shops. Further up 30th Street you will find Piacere Mio for a great cappuccino, Café Madeleine (for coffee, crepes, pastries), Mazzara's for pizza, The Station for burgers and beer, Sombrero for Mexican takeout, Rebecca's coffee house, a variety of boutiques and many other shops and restaurants to explore. Up the road a few miles is the area of North Park with an abundance of restaurants and businesses. A public golf course and the famous San Diego Zoo in beautiful Balboa Park is about five minutes by car.
To have access to all of the great attractions in sprawling San Diego, renting a car is highly recommended, and you'll find plenty of parking on our street. However, there is a bus line a 10-minute walk away which will take you, for example, downtown to the Gaslamp area and the Horton Plaza shopping mall, or the ferry to Coronado Island, or the harbor, or Seaport Village, or will connect with the trolley to the Mexico border, just to name a few destinations. The airport is short taxi ride away. Cars2Go smart cars are also available as a very convenient and inexpensive way to get around the city.
My husband and I spent a wonderful month in Shirley's lovely, cozy apartment. The accommodations were comfortable, inviting, spacious, and extremely clean. As a host, Shirley gets an A+. She is generous and was willing to help in any way we needed, from helping us find a seamstress to helping us navigate the county library, to making our cat welcome and comfortable. Shirley even made soup for me when I was sick! I heartily recommend Shirley's canyon hideaway to anyone interested in a peaceful, comfortable San Diego stay in a lovely setting. My husband and I are hoping to come back next year!
We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have stayed with Shirley. We could not have found a more perfect apartment or host for our five month stay in San Diego. It was truly a home away from home that we were extremely heartbroken to leave. During our entire stay Shirley was incredibly kind and understanding, especially of our two dogs who loved coming upstairs to see her (and the cat food). She gave us our space, but was always available whenever we needed her, whether for questions, a book exchange or to share a meal or glass of wine
If you’re considering spending any time in San Diego, you will be hard-pressed to find a more perfect place than Shirley’s Canyon Hideaway. Equipped with everything you would need, from a full gas stove/oven, access to a washer and dryer, and beautiful view of the canyon next door, it is the true epitome of what you want out of an Airbnb stay. The neighbourhood is extremely safe and all the neighbours are kind and welcoming. There’s no way you won’t feel right at home.
The bed is extremely comfortable, the shower has great pressure and even during the heat/humidity wave we had this summer, the apartment managed to stay cool with the help of a fan. In the fall, the fireplace helped to take a bit of the chill off at night.
The apartment is located in South Park, arguably the best area of San Diego. Within walking distance are the Food Bowl grocery store (amazing tortillas and fresh-made salsas), Stehly Farmers Market (all organic produce), Left Hand Black Tattoo Shop, South Park Dog Wash, restaurants and cool stores. As previous guests have mentioned, it is also a quick bike ride to the Gaslamp District downtown or to North Park and Hillcrest which is home to Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, lots of vintage/thrift stores and more great restaurants. The apartment is close to all the major highways, making travel anywhere along the coast a breeze and you can avoid the downtown traffic that can build up on the 5.
We came to do a “test run” of living in San Diego and our stay with Shirley solidified our decision to move to this amazing city. We are incredibly grateful that we got to meet Shirley, Simon, Chumley and Daisy and now can call them our friends.
Amazing experience. Beautiful, clean, well appointed apartment in very nice, safe neighborhood. Able to walk easily to various restaurants, etc. There aren't enough wonderful things that I can say about the host, Shirley. She is an incredibly kind person and we thoroughly enjoyed staying with her. Would definitely highly recommend her garden apartment to anyone visiting San Diego!
My boyfriend, pup and I had an amaaaazingly quiet and relaxing weekend at Shirley's place. She is ridiculously kind, accommodating, and understanding (especially when it comes to dogs). She definitely went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed.
The apartment was large, clean and comfortable with a fully stocked kitchen, and healthy snacks that were waiting for us upon arrival. The water pressure in the shower was amazing and the bed was super comfortable; two huge plusses in my book. The backyard is nice and tranquil with a view of the canyon. The neighborhood is extremely quiet and relaxing as well as close to really good restaurants, cafes, and other points of interest.
I would definitely stay again the next time I'm in San Diego. Don't hesitate! Shirley's the best!
Our stay in San Diego was amazing. We went to see our daughter who is working at a hospital in the area so she really needed some down time. Shirley's apt. downstair was perfect. It is stocked with about everything you might need. Beds were very comfortable, living room was nice, shower and bathroom is very nice, kitchen great! Overall experience was perfect for us. Also location is easy to
The backyard is great with a sitting area in the back of the yard. Shirley also allowed us to bring our dogs.....They only get to see each other once a while so they would play in the backyard and then Honey Bear would sneak up to Shirley's to visit and get a (email hidden)Co followed.....We all had a relaxing time.....and loved it!
Our month with Shirley was the best part of an extended four month trip. The canyon hideaway felt like home as soon as we arrived, and Shirley was the consummate airbnb host. We loved her personal attention to detail, i.e. fresh fruit, granola, and gourmet coffee provided for our first day, a comprehensive list of South Park restaurants and atractions, email updates on local events, suggestions for activities etc.
The canyon hideaway worked to perfection for us. It looks onto a tree-shaded back garden, which in turn backs onto a rugged-looking canyon. As the hideaway is at ground level, it can feel cool and welcoming even when the outside temperature hits the mid-80's. We appreciated the full kitchen, and the gas stove was a pleasant surprise, as was the gas fireplace when the nights were chilly. The hideaway really lives up to its name. It is tucked away on the far northeast side of the house, an added bonus for those seeking privacy (which we weren't!).
Location-wise, we couldn't have asked for more. Although San Diego is a typical US city (don't go without a car!), the hideaway is close to most attractions. We bought bicycles our second day there, and were able to cycle downtown (gaslamp, little italy seaport village etc.) within 10-15 minutes, to Balboa Park (zoo, museums etc.) within 20-25 minutes, Morley Field (tennis courts, outdoor swimming p;ool) within half an hour. The best beaches (Mission, Pacific, Ocean) are a twenty minute or less drive.
We could not have asked for a better host than Shirley. She was outgoing, engaging, empathetic to our needs, and always had time to chat (even with our six year old, who never stops chatting!!). And another added bonus was Shirley's adorable pooch Chumley. Shirley presented our six year old with a couple of photos of Chumley the day we left and he is still carrying them.
We've promised Shirley a return visit and invited her up to our airbnb suite in Canada.
Shirley is a gem of a host! My girlfriend and I had the best month-long stay at her place in South Park. She welcomed us with a basket of wine, cheese, and basic groceries. Its actually quite surprising how nice it is to not have to go out and buy milk, eggs and butter the first day! She was always accommodating to our needs and happily answered our questions about the neighborhood and the place.
The place has a lot of character and we found it to be very comfortable. Just the right size and no tacky decorations. The only problem was that we couldn't stay longer!
Shirley is really mellow and a joy to be around. I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy being hosted by her.
I was born in beautiful San Diego and have lived here much of my life, when I wasn't living in Los Angeles or St. Louis or New York, or the UK or the Mid-East, or spending time in Italy, which I visit whenever I can. So I know San Diego very well and look forward to sharing my city with visitors. My husband Simon, was born in the UK and, like me, thinks of himself as a global citizen, although he now thinks San Diego is the best city on earth. We live with an adorable old poodle and a reclusive and grumpy cat in an up and coming, trendy area called South Park (nothing to do with the cartoon series), culturally diverse, gay-friendly, dog-friendly, and except for being close to the flight path to the airport (the price for a convenient 10 minutes away), mostly quiet neighborhood with great neighbors.
