Dar El Menia has four bedrooms all with en-suite or private bathrooms. It is also possible to rent the entire house, further details upon inquiry.

Dar El Menia lies in the heart of Fes (Fez) Medina, former imperial capital of Morocco and the world’s largest medieval medina. Fes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site but it is not a museum it is a living, breathing city and Dar El Menia provides the perfect luxurious base to begin exploring the old and the new. This dar, or courtyard house, is at least 250 years old and has recently been completely restored using local craftsmen, techniques and materials.

Situated adjacent to Talaa Kebira, the main artery of the walled city, Dar El Menia offers easy access to all major sites of interest, the water clock, tanneries, hammams, mosques and medersas as well as being perfectly placed to begin roaming the medina’s narrow car free streets, which contain all manner of crafts, markets, restaurants, cafés and personality.

This fully restored dar is focused around its traditional courtyard, which, with its original marble floor, patterned tiles (zellig) and plaster carving, provides natural air conditioning and is the heart of the house around which all accommodation is based.

Dar El Menia is owned by an Englishman, Graham Coules. He has employed an old medina family who reside nearby. Um Klthum is the maid and is a superb traditional Moroccan cook, Jamal speaks English, French and Spanish and enjoys sharing his knowledge of the medina, Mostapha is the custodian of the house, he worked on the restoration project and is always on hand with a smile and a few words of Arabic to teach. One of the unique features of Dar El Menia is the opportunity this local family provides for further in-depth exploration of the people and culture of Fes.

  • We had a nice stay at Dar El Menia. We never met Graham, but the manager was very nice and helpful. We stayed in the room on the top floor, which was huge and beautiful. Make sure you take them up on their offer to meet you at the Autopark. No matter how good you think you are at directions, the medina is super confusing when you first arrive.

  • The pictures were accurate to how the apartment looked. It had a spacious living room for my party of 4.
Unfortunately, the WIFI wasn't working on the day we arrived but Graham was responsive to my email about it.

  • Graham's restoration Dar El Menia is exquisite, and the intricate details are fantastic. Breakfast on the terrace with the other guests every morning was a treat.

It's also just a short walk from the delicious and multi-cultural Cafe Clock, one of our favourite food stops in Morocco.

The riad can be a bit difficult to find on your own, even if you've braved a few medinas already, as we had. The medina of Fez is dizzying beyond all others, and I highly recommend you take Graham's advice and have someone meet you at Ain Azliten to take you in.

One other note: the room in which stayed (the one with 3 twin beds) has a rather low ceiling, and I imagine anyone taller than 5'9" might have some trouble.

I can picture Dar El Menia being an excellent place to rent out for an entire family, as the layout around the central courtyard really promotes a feeling of intimacy throughout the whole house.

    Thanks, Graham!

  • We stayed at Dar el Menia (Graham's house) for 3 nights in the beginning of may. We really loved Fes and the Riad of Graham was more then fantastic! Graham was very helpful throughout our stay and made us feel welcome and home.
Graham gave us some great tips about Fes, where to eat and arranged an airport-pickup and drop-off for 230 dh.
The Riad made is very "Moroccish" and the breakfast every morning on the roof terrace was a nice start of the day!
Everything in Graham's house was very clean and the nice bed was excellent after a long day walking in the Medina.
The location of the house is the best you can get; one minute walk from the "big" main street (Talaa Kebira) in the Medina and halfway between the places to be in the Medina, Place Boujloud and Place Dar Seffarine (where the big Mosque is)..
All that makes Dar el (email hidden) to stay and we would definitely recommend Graham's house for those who want to go to Fes!

  • Graham (email hidden), and his place is beautiful. The terrace overlooks the city, and he's located right in the center of the medina. Graham took time out of his day to help us map out our travels for the next week, including some invaluable tips for traveling to the dunes. Great place to stay in Fez!

  • The Dar El Menia Luxury Riad is a perfect little property and we can't imagine that it would be anything less than a perfect option for any type of guest visiting the medina in Fez. The interior is even more beautiful than the pictures can express. Our room was perfectly appointed with great Moroccan charm, comfortable and unique. Beds are nice, bathrooms are clean, shower is hot and the large wooden doors allow you to get the privacy you need. The terrace is spacious and Graham will invite you to have a traditional Moroccan dinner up there which you should definitely do. It was one of the best meals we had during our entire 2 week trip to Morocco.

All of this would be more than enough but Graham has a few more aces up his sleeve - his staff. Mustafa and Um Kal Thum were so sweet and accommodating, providing personal service at every oppourtunity. But our extra special thanks goes to Issam - Issam is the man!

A quick anecdote: We, being silly and forgetful tourists, had left our passports in the last town we had visited and when we realized this, it put us into quite a panic. But all for not. When we got to the Dar El Menia, Issam phoned the last Riad on our behalf, told them where we left them and they organized the shipment of our passports to Fez the next day on the domestic bus. There's always a chance that arrangements like this could go horribly wrong but sure enough, when the bus pulled into Fez the next day the bus driver had them for us and a tonne of worry was lifted from our shoulders. Thanks again to Issam and Graham for coordinating this effort which otherwise could have literally ruined out trip. We can't thank you guys enough!

Goes without saying that we hope to visit again some day!

  • This riad is absolutely amazing. The location is great, Graham is fantastic and helped us all the time (we asked questions incessantly). The room was absolutely gorgeous. Breakfast was great, and the roof terrace is beautiful. Our stay here was incredible.

  • Although we only stayed 1 night at Graham's place, we definitely had a very relaxing time there. The Riad is beautifully decorated and the rooms are furnished with lots of love. We did not meet Graham in person, but the communication prior to our arrival was great and very professional. On-site one of his employees welcomed us with great enthusiasm and friendliness. He even spoke perfect German! Breakfast on the rooftop terrace was awesome and one of the best we had on our entire trip. Unfortunately, the Riad was booked-out - we would have loved to stay longer!
