Welcome to Hunt Hill Nature Center! We are a private, non-profit environmental education and learning center. The rustic Andrews Cabin offers a peaceful retreat in the woods. The Andrews Cabin is located just off the main camp, settled on top of a hill overlooking forest and lakes. All new furniture, curtains and newer appliances were installed in May 2019. Nearby towns offer additional entertainment or relax in our quiet setting while reading a good book in front of the stone fireplace.
The space
This cabin is perfect for those looking for a cozy, no frills, rustic cabin-camping experience in the woods of northern Wisconsin. The cabin was built in 1917. All new mattresses, furniture, lamps, and curtains were installed in May 2019. The kitchen was remodeled in 2020.
The cabin is located near the parking area and has one step to get into the building. The entrance into the cabin is on the west side of the cabin. It features original hardwood floors, log construction and a field stone fireplace.
The cabin has a private bathroom with large shower, vanity, shelves, wooden hangers and flushing toilet.
The kitchen includes a sink, oven/stove with four burners, fridge, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker. It has some dishes, pots, pans, eating and cooking utensils. Dish soap and dishtowels are provided, but dishes must be handwashed by our guests.
Bedroom one features a queen bed and twin bed. Each bed has a night stand with lamp. There is a small table for placing luggage and hooks on the wall. Bedroom two has a bunk bed. The lower bunk is a full size mattress and the upper bunk is a twin. Both beds have their own light and the room also has a dresser.
The living room has a large dining room table that can be expanded to seat 6 people. There is a couch and two sitting areas with chairs. The large field stone fireplace offers ambiance to the space, but does little to heat the room. There is a wood shed near the cabin for the fireplace and a wood box located on the screen porch. There is a bookcase that holds books, games and puzzles.
The large screen porch has a picnic table and an outdoor table with four chairs. Guests can also admire the original wood stove from the cabin. There is a hanging light above the picnic table and string lights.
The cabin is seasonal, but does have small electric heaters in the bedrooms and bathroom. There is no a/c. It stays relatively cool in the summer thanks to the shading from the trees, but on the hottest days of the summer, a fan is provided for guests.
We do our best to keep the century-old cabin pest free, but it is not sealed tight. So, guests should be aware that on occasion, there may be mice present - especially in the fall as they make their way towards warmer locations in preparation of winter. We recommend keeping food items in the provided bins, make sure garbage is properly stored and dirty dishes are cleaned up often.
Also, the cabin is located in the beautiful woods of northern Wisconsin. Because of this, guests will experience bugs such as mosquitoes and sometimes deer flies. If you are hiking during the summer, you may also find ticks. It is recommended to wear long sleeves and pants while hiking and to bring bug spray if you will spend time outdoors.
Guest access
Guests have access to more than 10 miles of trails from the cabins.
Canoes and kayaks are available, in the main camp, for use during your stay. See the binder in the cabin for details on how to access them. (Access to the canoes & kayaks are down 70 steps. If you'd like to use your own vessel, we recommend putting in at any of the local boat landings.)
Please note that swimming is NOT allowed at our waterfront due to restrictions with our camp license. A beautiful swimming beach is a 15 minute drive away in the town of Shell Lake.
Other things to note
We are a rustic and remote location. There is no television or access to internet services. Most cell phones get coverage here, but it can be spotty.
Before booking, please remember that this is a rustic accommodation. It will be clean, but there may be bugs and pests on occasion. Guests staying at the cabin are asked to help our nonprofit by leaving no trace. A broom and vacuum are provided and a dumpster is located at the main camp to dispose of garbage at check out. We are grateful for our guests help in preserving this historic cabin.
