The Space

Picture yourself awakening to the songs of exotic birds and the comforting sounds of the rain forest. Feel the silken smoothness of hand-crafted exotic hardwood furniture under your fingertips. Imagine luxuriating in a huge hot tube surrounded by giant, primeval tree ferns, after a day hike in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

This is the Hale Ma'ukele experience. We invite you to join us in this beautiful, newly built home that will make your stay in Volcano enjoyable and comfortable.

A spacious living area with soaring cathedral ceilings, custom furniture, polished hardwood floors and natural ohia posts. All warmed up with a gas heater for our cool Volcano mornings. TV, DVD player and stereo in sitting area for entertainment.

Open kitchen area that is great for entertaining while you are cooking. Full gas stove. Full refrigerator. Includes dishwasher for easy cleanup. All the pots & pans that you need are available. Washer and dryer room off the kitchen.

Three bedrooms featuring high thread count sheets and thick comforters with locally themed print covers, artwork by local artist and windows overlooking the rainforest.

Apapane Suite: California King-sized bed with en suite full bathroom with jacuzzi tub, his and her sinks and walk-in closet.
Nene Suite: Two full-sized beds w/shared full bathroom.
I'iwi Suite: Queen-sized bed w/shared full bathroom.
Downstairs toilet and sink.
All bathrooms have towels and hair dryers.

Two large lanais (covered decks) that you can enjoy the beautiful outdoors - even when it's raining. Gas grill for barbecues. Eight-person hot tube surrounded by native trees and tree ferns. Landscaping featuring tropical fruit trees and native plants.

The location couldn't be more convenient for exploring the wonders of the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. We are located about 5 minutes away from the park entrance. The village of Volcano with coffee shop, general store, post office restaurants and local art gallery are all a few minutes walk away. If you stay for a Saturday, be sure to visit the Volcano farmer's market to pick up fresh produce to cook up!

  • We booked beautiful Hale Ma'ukele for a business trip - it actually ended up being much cheaper than two separate hotel rooms, plus we were able to unwind on our own time and relax a bit. Never a bad thing to combine work with a bit of relaxation, right?

The house is gorgeous and in a perfect location if you want to try to explore Volcanoes National Park. It's about a 45 minute drive to Hilo, but close enough that I drove down to catch the Merrie Monarch ho'ike night, and back in time to get in some good rest before our morning meeting nearby. I can't describe how peaceful I felt to wake up with a slight chill in the air and the sounds of the birds in the forest outside.

I've already recommended it to friends and hope to return again soon when I have more time! Mahalo!

  • We really enjoyed our stay - the home is beautiful and we couldn't have asked for more. The setting is private in amongst the trees and its a great location from which to explore the National Park.Mark made the whole process very easy and I would love to return one day. Thank you!

  • The volcano house was perfect for our stay in Hilo. Huge house, in a central location to explore the volcano national park. Loved the hot tub in the rain! Everything was explained well and would recommend this place for people who wanted to be close to the volcano to explore.

  • An immaculate, well designed home. Mark's interaction with us was prompt and right on point. I live a few months each year in Kona where we have a place. Whenever I we are on the other side, we will stay at this elegant home.

  • Very nice house and comfortable too. Really great location to explore volcano and SE side of Big Island. My cousin brought her family with 4 kids and never hone was happy. Enjoyed the hot tub immensely. Mahalo for a great stay!

  • My family so enjoyed our stay here! This place was incredible - exceeding all of our expectations! Would definitely visit again! Only wish is that there were more roach traps in the kitchen...but can't exactly fault the host there.

  • Gorgeous house in perfect location for exploring Volcanoes National Park. We got to come back to a well-equipped kitchen, spacious hot tub, and comfortable beds. Loved it!

  • Everyone in our group loved this jaw-droppingly beautiful house. The home is every bit as spacious and open as it appears in the photos. Minutes away from the Volcano National Park, the general store (which sells sandwiches, snacks, and basics like eggs & bread), and some restaurants, the location is hard to beat. Heavy fog had set in when we tried to go to the Jaggar Museum overlook, but since we were so close, we decided to return later that night and it was not a drag at all.

The hot tub in the rainforest was fantastic and a unique experience, though with 5 of us, we found it difficult to get the temperature (website hidden) was a breeze since the kitchen was so well-equipped (even had coffee beans for the coffee grinder and coffee maker!). We wish we could've stayed longer, and we definitely hope to be back in the future.
