Peaceful, comfortable, private suite great for travelers or overflow guests.

The Space

Would you like to come home to a safe, family-oriented block in South Slope, Brooklyn? This second floor suite consists of one large room and two smaller rooms with a full tub bathroom. This is a separate 'floor through' space with great views to the back yard. The suite is private and entered with a key.

The suite is on the second floor separated from the rest of the house with many flexible features. (For Europeans and Australians, the second floor is up one flight of stairs.) A small refrigerator, microwave, slow cooker, coffeemaker and other electrical appliances are in the suite. The bathroom is cozy, and has a full bath, nice shower and all the basics. The bathroom ensuite is in the big bedroom which is entered from the hallway. The middle room has a big closet with shelves and a pull out single love seat. In the closet are many helpful items such as TV tables, iron and travel ironing board, dishes, glassware etc. The small front room faces the street with a single captain's bed and some shelves. Each room opens into the next in a 'floor through' arrangement, there is not a separate hall. Our house just celebrated its 140 year birthday, and has lived through so much history in the last three centuries. According to many our home has "good vibes."

Close to the F & G subway in one direction (3 blocks) and the R, (N, D) in the other (5 blocks) with access to all the rest of the train system. 30 - 40 minutes to just about anywhere including Midtown Manhattan, Coney Island, Williamsburg. 20 minute walk or short bus ride to Barclays Arena--great concerts and sports events. 5 minute walk to Prospect Park or Greenwood Cemetery. Take a one mile stroll down Seventh Avenue or a scenic bus to downtown Brooklyn. It is easy enough to get in and out of Manhattan, but we like to encourage guests to get to know Brooklyn a little too. We love our borough!

Particularly appropriate for traveling women and those new to NYC--I will make sure you are safely well-oriented and un-hassled if at all possible. Many of our recent guests have been the visiting parents of nearby neighbors who don't have enough room in their apartments. I have also hosted many single women who want a comfortable home away from home.

There are great restaurants, shops, hang out cafes, grocery stores (email hidden)ly nightlife nearby, but all is quiet once you return home to our lovely tree-lined block. Laundromats are very convenient, the closest is a block away. Our neighborhood is a take-out delivery paradise, every cuisine can be ordered and delivered to the door.

Yo entiendo el español, aunque yo no lo hablan bien.

Because of the stairs and small bathroom, the suite is probably not good for someone with major mobility issues. In particular, it may be a little awkward getting in and out of the tub.

I live on the first floor and our friendly upstairs neighbor Marian has a separate apartment on the third floor. I am a recently retired mom and along with my dogs Opal and Owen, we are friendly and helpful but not intrusive. Opal is seven and very friendly; little Owen, our one year old puppy, is a bundle of wiggly enthusiasm. They will often greet you at the door and are very loving and not aggressive. Many guests find these enthusiastic greetings to be a highlight of their visit. If you are afraid of dogs, please let me know.

This is a great place for an extended stay--for writers or student interns. I can make a small desk available, our internet works great and the space is quiet and comfortable to help you to focus.

We now have wireless TV available, you can access cable as well as sports stations, HBO and Showtime. You just need a laptop.

Here is what is available for cooking in the suite:
microwave
refrigerator
utility cart
utensils
cutting board
dishes
slow cooker
small and large rice cooker
water boiler for beverages
coffee maker

If you would like to purchase a start-up grocery package please make this request when booking.

It has been great having guests, I have met people from all over the world. I hope to meet you too.

My brother and his girlfriend came to the NY to visit me. They told me that they were very comfortable in the place, the room is quiet, clean and Sara was a very attentive host. The neighborhood is lovely too. Totally recommendable!!!

My girlfriend & I stayed here for about 5 nights during a vacation to New York, and the place was absolutely perfect as a launching pad to the rest of the city. The location was perfect, and only a few blocks away from the F train into Manhattan and the G train into the rest of Brooklyn. The room was spacious and quiet, and the perfect place to relax after a long day exploring the city. Sara was very helpful with any questions we had about our travel itinerary or things to do in the city, and her two dogs Opal and Oliver are adorable. Definitely worthy of a five star rating.

Sara was a wonderful host! She really anticipates your needs and is quick to ask if you need anything. The room was beautiful, clean, comfortable and quiet. I wish we'd had a chance to talk more (we were mostly ships passing in the night!) because she's so nice. It is a perfect home away from home.

The room is big, clean, sunny and had a private bathroom, fridge, and microwave. Sara was very kind and hospitable. The neighborhood is beautiful and very safe. I highly recommend this room to anyone coming to New York. You won't regret it!

Some friends and I stayed with Sara for four days- it was a great experience! Our first host dropped us last minute (her current guest wanted to stay longer) and Sara agreed to let us stay with her the day before we arrived. She was a VERY kind and accommodating host, and the space was perfect for our needs. The neighborhood is quiet and family oriented, and the walk to the F train was reasonable (about 5-8 minutes, more if you stop at Terrace Bagels like we did almost daily). Thanks so much for the lovely rooms!

Sara was very accommodating right from the start! We very much enjoyed our stay here. Her place is quiet, clean, stylish and very private. Comfy bed and spacious shower! Sara's place is right by several very good restaurants, coffee shops that we are already missing.. The train (F/R) is just a short walk away as is Prospect Park. I would very much recommend staying at Sara's!!

Wonderful, tranquil, comfortable space! The room is quite spacious with a private bath and sitting area, and the whole space is freshly remodeled. Sara is an ideal host--when we let her know about a broken piece of furniture, she replaced it within HOURS! Bottom line: We felt comfy and and safe here even during Hurricane Irene, so you'll definitely enjoy your stay!

Guest Access

You will have access to the floor through suite, the main hallway.

Interaction with Guests

I have been a host for a few years now and I will interact with you as much or as little as you need. I travel quite a bit but can always been reached by phone, text, email.

Other Things to Note

Some folks have asked about the recent NY controversy about Airbnb's legality. The issues do not apply to my suite since I rent a single suite in my single house. Nor am I required to collect hotel or sales tax, though I do pay income tax on all the income derived. Feel free to ask if you have any concerns.

  • Sara's apartment was a blessing for me! It allowed me to spend a full two weeks with my brand-new granddaughter in Park Slope. It can be a challenge for me to stay in a hotel for more than a few days, as I have a health condition that makes me hypersensitive to many common chemicals, including fragrances and cleaning products. While Sara was not initially familiar with how to keep house for a "canary" like me, she was very willing to give it a try. Her cleaner changed over to vinegar and baking soda before I arrived and she did everything she could to make the place meet my specific needs. Sara told me some guests have balked at the fact that the house is not 100% renovated, but for someone who can have reactions to new paint, varnish, etc. that was actually a plus. The bedroom is serene and, because the suite goes from front to back of the house, even though it was a hot June, there was always a breeze; most nights I did not need the A/C.
The neighborhood is not chi-chi but I liked it all the better for that. It was the kind of working-class vibe I grew up with. The view into the backyards with giant trees made me feel at home.
The kitchen arrangement, while not ideal for really cooking a lot, is perfectly adequate for breakfasts and snacks.
All in all a very pleasant stay - slept well, had a quiet place to work, and everything I needed. I will be back, I'm sure!

  • Sara was standing by for our arrival. She and her dogs met us at the door and showed us to our room. When we pointed out a bit later there were no knives of any sort in the drawer of miscellaneous cutlery, she provided a couple immediately. She also showed us the window air conditioner she had installed in case it became too warm during our stay. She checked in on us a couple of times via email, asking if we needed anything. Once past the antique entry and stairs, the room itself was adequate with plenty of light, and, after an exhausting trip, the full bed with Ikea mattress was welcome. Getting in and out of the bathtub / shower could be challenging for some though Sara has installed grab bars to help squeeze past the bathroom sink and step up and into the end of the tub where there was plenty of hot water and good pressure. We used the coffee maker, the toaster and the mini-fridge and managed to wash up our dishes in the bathroom sink. Sara's home is located on a quiet, safe street convenient to South Park Slope Brooklyn and a short 15-minute walk to the subway and Prospect Park. Her tenant above the airbnb suite is extremely discreet and pleasant.

  • Sara was a very warm and friendly host. She had to be out of town most of the time I was there. But we were able to meet before I checked in and she was around the day before I left. She was very accessible should I have needed anything. The accommodations were very nice. And it was a block away from many shops and restaurants. The subway was a few blocks away. Unfortunately, I didn't read the listing carefully enough when I booked. I think I assumed there would be a television. There was wifi, but I don't have a laptop or iPad. I did have a Nook and was able to get music on Pandora. Since I was in Manhattan every day until very late, the lack of television didn't really matter. But it is something I would think about next time. There were appliances available - microwave, toaster, etc. All in all, my stay at Sara's was very pleasant.

    Response from Sara:

    Thanks Geri,

Soon I will have a laptop available for guests who don't come with their own device. Sorry I couldn't manage that for you. Wifi television has worked well for others and I'm glad this experience pushed me to provide for my future guests.

Hope to see you again. Thanks for the lovely review.

  • Extremely friendly and convenient place to stay, near beautiful Prospect park, near 7th and 9th Ave, which are both packed with nice and varied restaurants and café's. Sarah is relaxed and helpful. A real home away from home. The only
'minor' inconvenience is the lack of a real
kitchen, though all kitchen necessities are available.

Thanks for the feedback on the kitchen facilities. Hope to see you again. Thanks for the nice review. Owen and Opal say hi and are working on remembering their Dutch that you taught them.

  • We stayed at Sara's for 2 weeks during our first trip to NY. Sara was a lovely host and couldn't have been more helpful. The suite itself had a comfortable bed and a good shower which was perfect after long days of exploring NY. The area was safe and we had no problems walking back at night. There are some very good local restaurants and cafes as well as a wide range of takeout options for those rainy days in. The metro is only a 10-minute walk away and we were able to get everywhere we needed from there. If we were to return to NY, we would consider staying at Sara's again.

  • My friend and I stayed at Sara's apartment for a little over a month. She is a very nice, easy going and kind lady. She met us when we first arrived and welcomed us. She gave us the keys and we settled eight away. We are not big fans of dogs so she made sure they were not on our way which was nice of her.

The apartment is clean, nice and private. Sara bought some new furniture from IKEA for us. The beds were extremely comfortable and WARM, it was cold outside. Everything we needed was there in the apartment. We had a great stay and highly recommend staying here.

    Thanks Sara!

  • Sara was very friendly and helpful without intruding in any way. Opal and Owen were a delight and we welcomed their intrusion, though they are very well behaved and won't bother you a bit if you don't invite them in. :)

The room was clean, snug (even in frigid weather) and well-appointed and the bathroom shower was a Godsend. I developed a cold during my stay and was gratified to have a comfy bed, supplies to make tea with honey and a hot, hot shower whenever I needed it.

It was also only 2 blocks from Prospect Park, which I'm certain is fantastic in the summer. Sara has internet cable available with a bunch of channels and it rarely "buffered" so I watched uninterrupted television while I recuperated. We also have a small projector and external speaker that made the Superbowl a fantastic event as the room has a nice, clean wall opposite the bed that is perfect for projection.

Thanks Sara, we look forward to seeing you in MV.

  • Fantastic place to stay. Sara was welcoming, helpful and even stayed up late for my late arrival. The room is pretty as in the pictures with a nice view of pine trees outside. 10 minute walk to Prospect Park and F train. Similar to the R train. Would definitely stay again!

About
I am a recently retired teacher and school administrator. I have lived on 17th St in Brooklyn for thirty years. My son finished with graduate school and lives around the corner. I am now a graduate student here at CUNY Grad Center. I think Brooklyn is the greatest place on earth--at least of all the places in the world I have been so far. Come and visit our great borough.
