About this listing
Peaceful, comfortable, private suite great for travelers or overflow guests. The space is cozy -- it is a 'floor through' arrangement -- each room opens into the next. Our 140 year old house is a no-frills comfy oasis from the city's busy life.
Would you like to come home to a safe, family-oriented block in South Slope, Brooklyn? This second floor apartment consists of one large room (12x12) and a smaller room (10x10) with a full tub bathroom and small full kitchenette. For many out of towners it is small--New Yorkers think it is spacious. This is a separate 'floor through' space with views to the back yard. The space is private and entered with a key.
The apartment is on the second floor separated from the rest of the house with many flexible features. (For Europeans and Australians, the second floor is up one flight of stairs.) The bathroom is cozy, and has a full bath, nice shower and all the basics. The bathroom ensuite is in the big bedroom which is entered from the hallway. The middle room has a big closet with shelves and a pull out single love seat. There are many helpful items such as TV tables, iron and travel ironing board, dishes, glassware etc. The small front room kitchen faces the street and has a gas stove and refrigerator with all the basics of an efficiency kitchen.
Each room opens into the next in a 'floor through' arrangement, there is not a separate hall. Our house just celebrated its 140 year birthday, and has lived through so much history in the last three centuries. We have retained some of the historic features and renovated some others. According to many our home has "good vibes." It is an old house, things are not perfect. Please don't rent our space if you are a perfectionist who wants a new and shiny space. The apartment is clean, comfy and well cared for, but a gleaming newly built apartment building, it is not. Take a look at the pictures and make sure you are happy with our humble home.
Close to the F & G subway in one direction (3 blocks) and the R, (N, D) in the other (5 blocks) with access to all the rest of the train system. 30 - 40 minutes to just about anywhere including Midtown Manhattan, Coney Island, Williamsburg. 20 minute walk or short bus ride to Barclays Arena--great concerts and sports events. 5 minute walk to Prospect Park or Greenwood Cemetery. Take a one mile stroll down Seventh Avenue or a scenic bus to downtown Brooklyn. It is easy enough to get in and out of Manhattan, but we like to encourage guests to get to know Brooklyn a little too. We love our borough!
Particularly appropriate for traveling women and those new to NYC--I will make sure you are safely well-oriented and un-hassled if at all possible. Many of our recent guests have been the visiting parents of nearby neighbors who don't have enough room in their apartments. I have also hosted many single women who want a comfortable home away from home.
There are great restaurants, shops, hang out cafes, grocery stores and a lively nightlife nearby, but all is quiet once you return home to our lovely tree-lined block. Laundromats are very convenient, the closest is a block away. Our neighborhood is a take-out delivery paradise, every cuisine can be ordered and delivered to the door.
Yo entiendo el español, aunque yo no lo hablan bien.
Because of the stairs and small bathroom, the suite is probably not good for someone with major mobility issues. In particular, it may be a little awkward getting in and out of the tub.
The middle room can be set up with two love seats as a small sitting area, or with a single pull out bed. The bed is adequate, not luxurious and would not be suitable for a particularly tall or heavy person. If you are sharing with a friend, please be aware that the two beds are not of equal quality. If three are sharing, he apartment is best for a couple and smaller child 5-10 years old. It would likely not be comfortable three adults to share.
I live on the first floor with my adult son Déna, when I am in town, and our friendly upstairs neighbor Marian has a separate apartment on the third floor. I am a recently retired mom and along with my dogs Opal and Owen, we are friendly and helpful but not intrusive. Opal is nine and very friendly; little Owen, our three year old, is a bundle of wiggly enthusiasm. They will often greet you at the door and are very loving and not aggressive. I am out of town quite a lot with the dogs, so fairly often they are not in residence.
This is a great place for an extended stay--for writers or student interns. I can make a small desk available, our internet works great and the space is quiet and comfortable to help you to focus.
We now have wireless TV available, you can access cable as well as sports stations, HBO and Showtime. You just need a laptop.
It has been great having guests, I have met people from all over the world. I hope to meet you too.
Sara, your host
My brother and his girlfriend came to the NY to visit me. They told me that they were very comfortable in the place, the room is quiet, clean and Sara was a very attentive host. The neighborhood is lovely too. Totally recommendable!!!
My girlfriend & I stayed here for about 5 nights during a vacation to New York, and the place was absolutely perfect as a launching pad to the rest of the city. The location was perfect, and only a few blocks away from the F train into Manhattan and the G train into the rest of Brooklyn. The room was spacious and quiet, and the perfect place to relax after a long day exploring the city. Sara was very helpful with any questions we had about our travel itinerary or things to do in the city, and her two dogs Opal and Oliver are adorable. Definitely worthy of a five star rating.
Sara was a wonderful host! She really anticipates your needs and is quick to ask if you need anything. The room was beautiful, clean, comfortable and quiet. I wish we'd had a chance to talk more (we were mostly ships passing in the night!) because she's so nice. It is a perfect home away from home.
The room is big, clean, sunny and had a private bathroom, fridge, and microwave. Sara was very kind and hospitable. The neighborhood is beautiful and very safe. I highly recommend this room to anyone coming to New York. You won't regret it!
Some friends and I stayed with Sara for four days- it was a great experience! Our first host dropped us last minute (her current guest wanted to stay longer) and Sara agreed to let us stay with her the day before we arrived. She was a VERY kind and accommodating host, and the space was perfect for our needs. The neighborhood is quiet and family oriented, and the walk to the F train was reasonable (about 5-8 minutes, more if you stop at Terrace Bagels like we did almost daily). Thanks so much for the lovely rooms!
Sara was very accommodating right from the start! We very much enjoyed our stay here. Her place is quiet, clean, stylish and very private. Comfy bed and spacious shower! Sara's place is right by several very good restaurants, coffee shops that we are already missing.. The train (F/R) is just a short walk away as is Prospect Park. I would very much recommend staying at Sara's!!
Wonderful, tranquil, comfortable space! The room is quite spacious with a private bath and sitting area, and the whole space is freshly remodeled. Sara is an ideal host--when we let her know about a broken piece of furniture, she replaced it within HOURS! Bottom line: We felt comfy and and safe here even during Hurricane Irene, so you'll definitely enjoy your stay!
You will have access to the floor through apartment and the main hallway.
Attention to smokers: This suite is not suitable for you. Because of allergies of our residents, we ask that you not smoke anywhere in or near the house and please air out your clothing when you have been around smokers. A number of recent visitors have thought that standing in the front doorway and smoking would be acceptable--it is not! We want our guests to be comfortable, but you cannot smoke anywhere in the house or on the property. Another listing would be a better fit for you if you smoke.
Interaction with Guests
I have been a host for a few years now and I will interact with you as much or as little as you need. I travel quite a bit but can always been reached by phone, text, email.
Other Things to Note
Some folks have asked about the recent NY controversy about Airbnb's legality. The issues do not apply to my space since I rent a single suite in my single house. Nor am I required at this time to collect hotel or sales tax, though I do pay income tax on all the income derived. Feel free to ask if you have any concerns.
No smoking, of anything. No flames in the house. There is no smoking anywhere on the property. Do not smoke out the window, do not smoke in the front door, do not smoke near the house.
Try to keep from scratching the newish wood floors.
All of Brooklyn recycles. Separate glass plastic and metal; paper; and trash and place in cans outside, or leave it for us to sort.
Let me know what you need. We have many items for your use, just ask.
Be nice to the dogs. But please keep them from going in the suite, we try to keep it allergen-free for guests.
Feel free to use the broom and cleaning supplies under the sink.
The heating system is noisy when it starts up, it sounds like people banging on the pipes. Once it gets going its quite warm. I have it timed to go on early in the evening so it doesn't wake you up.
Be happy enjoy your stay.
I am a recently retired teacher and school administrator. I have lived on 17th St in Brooklyn for thirty years and recently purchased my dream vacation home in Martha's Vineyard, MA. My son finished with graduate school and lives around the corner. I think Brooklyn is the greatest place on earth--at least of all the places in the world I have been so far. Come and visit our great borough.
