HAVE FUN IN EVERYTHING YOU DO!

Other things to note

The romantic settlement of Jelsa can be found on Island of Hvar, considered to be among the most popular isles of Croatian shore. Not a stranger to celebrities such as Beyonce and Prince Charles, Hvar and its settlements provide fantastic summer experience thanks to rich tradition, long history and literally hundreds of isolated coves, just waiting to be discovered by visitors of Adriatic shoreline. Speaking of tourist offers, here are three things Jelsa is known for. We can literally consider them the town symbols.
Lavender
Although one would think lavender is indigenous plant of Hvar, that is not the case. The bushes of hybrid lavender came a century ago, but fertile soil and great weather quickly spread the plant over the island. Humans helped, of course. Knowing that lavender can be used as a strong analgetic, they harvested it as much as they could during the decades. Not even two large fires and development of tourism could squeeze the plant from Hvar. If you want a practical souvenir from Jelsa, buy yourself a small package of lavender. It has a beautiful scent, and will repel insects from your wardrobes.
Wine Fiesta
Every year, during the last weekend in August, a large fiesta is organized in Jelsa. It gathers the best wine makers of Croatia, together with a few influential guests from foreign countries. A rich cultural program is scheduled for this time, involving something for every age, preference and cultural background. From wild nightclub parties to traditional klapa concerts on Jelsa promenades, wine fiesta is an event of Hvar you don’t want to miss.
Olive Oil
Nicknamed ‘The Green Gold of Jelsa’, olive trees have been used for centuries by local population. While in past olive trees were used for construction of people’s homes, today their fruits are part of an important Jelsa industry: extra virgin olive oil. One of the healthiest ingredients a kitchen can have today; it also boasts the taste of every meal to new heights. A simple scrambled egg can become a culinary delicacy with a few drops of this golden-looking liquid.

Marko´s grandma was very nice and treated us to fresh figs and rakia when we arrived. How beautiful Jelsa is in the first weeks of September! Soft sun, warm water, easy touch of the breeze! There are not many people, Slavic, German, English speech is heard. In a cozy bay, surrounded by mountains, spend the night with yachts to take tourists to the Adriatic Sea in the morning. The water on the stony beaches is transparent and warm. First refreshes, then long does not let go. In the port early in the morning they sell fresh fish, squid and mussels, next to vegetables and fresh bread. Marko´s grandma kindly provided us with free bicycles, which however required repairs, but we easily coped with this and went to Jelsa, Grebishche, Sviriche, (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN)ska. On a rainy day, we rented an Opel Corso and drove around the island of Hvar along and across. Particularly interesting was the stone village of Humak. On the road Local residents sell honey, wine, rosemary, lavender and olive oil. Food and wine in restaurants are delicious, though not cheap, at the level of France. Except for two rainy days the weather was beautiful, especially the hours of sunrise with complete calm on the sea and in the air. The time spent on Hvar will be remembered for a long time!

This was a great base from which to explore Jelsa and (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN)ska. We really enjoyed renting bikes to explore the island and the beaches that are slightly further afield. The apartment was spotlessly clean and our host was very welcoming! They were flexible and allowed us to stay for an extra night. Thanks very much for having us!

We had a very nice time at Marko´s appartment in Jelsa! The location allowed an amazing view over the sea, and the appartment was nice and comfortable. Marko´s grandma was very sweet and brought us fresh figs daily, and offered us to borrow bikes. One of them was, however, broken, which was a shame since we did not have a car with us. As recommendation for others, it seems much more convenient to have a car with you or rent bikes in the city, as there is quite some walking time back and forward to the city (2km approx.) This will also allow you to drive a bit away from the area and find some more beaches. As we were in Jelsa for the main turist season, most of the spots in walking distance were very crowded. Other than that, it is was very lovely place and cozy city to enjoy some relaxation.

We had a good stay with Marko. Communication was really good even through some difficulties, everything went smooth. The house is a bit smaller than it seems in the pictures but the room is big. the surrounding area is gorgeous and the house is really well located, close enough to walk to the village but far enough to get some good rest. it's 25 min drive from Hvar. overall is was a good way to end our vacation.

Response from Marko:
Dear Sara, thank you for staying at our place. House seems smaller because of wide lenses from camera, as it is only way to put complete house in one frame.

We stayed at Markos apartement for one week. He wasn't there himself but his grandma is living there and welcomed us with homemade lemonade, she showed us everything and was there to answer questions (althought she doesn't speak english). The apartement has beautiful seaview and is located 20min walk from Centre of Jelsa. Its very quiet and the sea is just down the road (only 2min). There are many lonely bays near the house. Thanks to Marko and his grandma!
