Our converted barn is in the heart of the Lake District National Park in north west England. It has stunning valley, forest and woodland views from the windows. Our nearest town is Keswick (just 5 miles by bus, boat, boot or car).
Upstairs the fully equipped kitchen has a dining table and sink with a view (and a dishwasher, don't worry!).
Please note, except for very last minute bookings, arrival/departure days are Mondays and Fridays. If you're looking for other dates, try our Shepherd's hut or Studio apartment at Manesty.
Cocklety How Stable Loft is part of a converted 17th century barn in an idyllic Lake District location. Situated next to the main farmhouse building, it is nestled at the foot of the slopes of Maiden Moor with sweeping valley views across Borrowdale towards Brown Dodd and King's How and woodland views towards our private small woodland which you are free to explore.
It has 3 bedrooms (1 standard double, 1 double with a king size bed and 1 single),
the kitchen/dining room and a bathroom on the first floor. There is access out the back of the cottage at this level to a sunny patio with garden table and chairs.
On the ground floor the large entrance hall leads to the spacious sitting room with 3 armchairs, a reclining armchair and a little sofa. There is also a washing machine and drier at this level and a shower room.
The cottage is spacious and we offer lower prices for smaller parties of 3 or 4 guests.
Outside at the front of the cottage there is a sheltered lawn and parking for one car (more parking nearby if you need it).
Guests have their own parking space, entrance, lawn and private patio with table and chairs and have exclusive use of the house. They are welcome to explore our small wooded fell side behind the cottage. They have access to a shared utility room with extra tourist information, games, puzzles, books and portable bbq.
Interaction with Guests
Our family have lived at Manesty, a traditional Lakeland farmstead in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years and have a long history of welcoming visitors to share our beautiful part of the world. We live in the house near the original farmstead built by Alan's father and grandfather and let the original farmhouse and converted barns as holiday cottages. We're here to help you get the best out of your stay if you want and are always happy to offer advice, just ask.
Manesty is less than a mile from the Derwentwater lakeshore and about the same distance from the pretty village of Grange, with it's teashops and double hump-backed bridge over the River Derwent. The 'Honister Ramber' bus takes you into Keswick from the doorstep between Easter and November, or the launch runs all-year round, as does a bus from Grange.
We're in a perfect location for walks, water sports, touring the villages, or just sitting back to relax! We provide all our guests with our 'walks from the door' which we have written ourselves: 12 walks of varying lengths that you can enjoy straight out of the gate.
From Easter to October a bus (77/77A, the 'Honister Rambler') goes from Manesty's front gate to Keswick. All year round the 78 goes to Keswick from Grange, less than a mile away and there is also a boat, the 'Keswick Launch' which picks up from High Brandlehow and Lodore landing stages, both about a mile from Manesty.
From Keswick, there is a bus to our nearest railway station Penrith which is well served by high speed trains (less than 3 hours to London).
And of course, you can bring your car. We have off road parking.
Except for very last minute bookings which have been discussed with us, arrival and departure days are on Monday and Friday, with 4 nights stays from Mon - Fri and 3 nights stays from Fri - Mon. For shorter stays or other arrival and departure days please have a look at our studio or shepherd's hut on our other two listings.
Please do not exceed the maximum occupancy for which you have booked the property (3, 4 or 5 guests). When you book we will ask for the number of guests staying and their names and addresses - we are happy for you to change these, but just let us know!
The price includes bed linen, towels and electricity.
Our accommodation is non smoking and pet free.
We don't include any cleaning fees in our prices, instead we ask you to leave your accommodation clean and tidy at the end of your stay. On your arrival we ask for a small returnable deposit (£10 per person, minimum £20) which we hold while you are with us. At the end of your stay we return this after a quick check. We would like to do this deposit through airbnb but their minimum deposit is £70 which we think is too much! If you would prefer to pay a cleaning fee instead, please let us know and we can arrange this.
We have one outdoor wood fired hot tub, which can be booked for a day at a time by guests staying in any of our accommodation. Please book in advance and check availability before you book accommodation if this is an integral part of your holiday plans.
Finally, please let us know of any anything you need or any problems you might have while you are here. We want you to have a great stay with us and letting us know of any issues as soon as they arise means we can sort them out as soon as possible instead of their dragging on through your holiday. Feel free to ask us about great places to walk and visit while you are here - our family has been at Manesty for six generations so we should be able to point you in the right direction!
Outstanding location - lovely views, right next to fantastic walks - highly recommended
The listing description was accurate and the cottage in very good condition and in a lovely setting. Alan met us and took us over the property in detail and made it clear he was available at any time for any queries.
The property was warm and comfortable with fabulous views and lots of good local walking. Maps and instructions were available along with other local information.
We had an absolutely lovely stay in Manesty. The appartment is situated virtually at several trailheads and the views are great. Try the hot tub - its worth the effort! We were comfortable staying 4 adults and 2 children in the appartment. Hope we'll be back some day.
We had a wonderful stay at Manesty Holiday Cottages! The location was beautiful, and the cottage itself was just great! Much more spacious than expected, everything we needed was there and all things neat and clean. Alan, Cheryl and Alice were extremely kind, helpful and accomodating. Keswick was the nicest little town and only about 10 minutes drive away, and the Lake District as such offered a really wide range of activities. We went there with kids aged 10 and 7, and we went climbing Catbells (the hill in the backyard), motorboat sailing on Derwentwater and Tree Top Trekking by one of the other lakes, and we all really enjoyed ourselves while we were there.
A perfect place to stay in wonderful surroundings! Alan and Cheryl were very nice and helpful both with planning before we arrived and during our stay. The housing was very good and perfectly located for hikes directly from the front door. I can only recommend staying here and hope to return one day myself :)
We had a great stay with Alan and Cheryl - very comfortable three bedroom more than accommodated our family of four. We have had several AirBnB experiences and while all have been great, we have to say that this home had the best prepared kitchen of any to date making it easy to prepare meals and not run out of plates, silverware or pots and pans early! We enjoyed three nights of comfortable sleep with days full of exploring the Lakes District - we come from Vancouver, and were very impressed with the scenery the area provided! We would stay with Alan and Cheryl again, and would recommend to anyone looking for a comfortable stay with helpful, informative hosts.

Alan's family has lived at Manesty, in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years. Our children (now grown up) are the sixth generation to have lived here. Our family has a long history of welcoming visitors to this magical part of Borrowdale and we are proud to continue the tradition of sharing our beautiful little corner of England.
If you want, we're able to provide you with a wealth of local information and tips. Our 'walks from the door' is just one way that we try to make sure you get the most from your Lake District holiday. We live next door so we're always on hand to answer questions, help you book activities and recommend things to do but far enough away though that you don't need to see us if you don't want to. We're really proud of our cottages and glamping accommodation and love our area. We hope to welcome you soon!
