There is lots to see and do in and around the Galle Fort. Here are our some of our top recommendations!

Spectacular sunsets from the rampart walls are almost an everyday occurrence in the Fort. Make sure you don’t miss it! From the hostel, turn right out the door, cross the green and grab yourself a spot on the rampart wall. Turtles can often be seen bobbing about in the water below the sunset viewing point.

An early morning or evening walk around the Fort’s walls and ramparts, a favourite pastime for the locals, is an ideal way for you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Fort. It’s a popular spot for wedding pictures, a dip in the sea and cricket practice. The generous locals are usually only too delighted when visitors ask to join in the game.

The great rampart walls protect more than 400 buildings in the Fort, as it did on the 26th December 2004 when the tsunami broke out through the lower gates of the Fort. The waves flowed out again very quickly and left no major structural damage. Take your time to explore the narrow streets lined with colonial buildings, each with its own unique history.

Many Dutch and British era buildings have been renovated and converted into quaint cafes and boutique souvenir shops. Pilgrims Souvenirs, also located in the Fort, offers hostel guests a 10% discount. From the hostel turn right. At the end of the lane / at the Temple turn left. Continue along the street until you reach a wooden hut filled with wood carvings, traditional masks and jewelry.

Swimming and snorkelling is not a common activity for tourists in the Fort. But it’s really enjoyable in the season when the water is clear and calm! If the Fort’s beaches are too small for you, fortunately the Fort is located just minutes away from the country’s finest beaches. A visit to Rumassala / the Japanese Peace Pagoda is well worth it. It offers spectacular views of the Galle Fort from the other side of the bay. From here, a short walk down through the jungle lands you in Jungle Beach, which is a great spot for a swim and a small snack. Jungle beach is best accessed by tuktuk for 500 Sri Lankan rupees.

Both Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa are short bus rides away from the Fort, 15 minutes and 30 minutes respectively. Both beaches offer opportunities to snorkel and dive. For surfing we recommend Sahana Beach, ideal for beginners and only moments away from the Fort. Please ask our staff for assistance regarding bus schedules or for traveling by tuktuk.

At night the Fort is a sleepy town with most restaurants closing at 9 / 10 pm. In addition most restaurants / cafés don’t sell alcohol but there a few. The Hammock Cafe stays open for drinks a little more than most but still it's lights out by 12 unless an impromptu party has changed the mood.
