The Space

Gowanus is between Carroll Gardens and Park Slope, off the G, F, and R subway lines. It's a pretty cool neighborhood and well worth exploring especially if you're interested in the New York art community. 20 minutes into Manhattan, less to Williamsburg, and a ten minute walk to Prospect Park. If you have time, I'd recommend heading south though. Coney Island is pretty cool, it's about 40 minutes by train. Access to the ferry at Redhook is also close to here, if it's a nice day you absolutely must go!

Gowanus is also pretty safe given it's proximity to more upscale neighborhoods. Walk two blocks west and you're in prime Park Slope, which is credited for having the best restaurants and bars in the city. Carroll Gardens is full of interesting little shops and weekend flee markets. But what I like best about this part of Brooklyn the community, in particular because it is the proud home of more artists than any other neighborhood in NY.

Laundry in building (it takes quarters, but I usually leave a bunch out if I have guests).

Outdoor/backyard access, shared with fantastic people and a very friendly cat. (He doesn't come in the building, I'm not actually sure who he belongs to.)

My apartment is small but can easily fit two people. More are welcome with no charge, but I would recommend bringing a blow up mattress for extra people.

  • Dana is a friendly and accommodating host. Check in and check out was really easy and flexible. The apartment is small, but cozy and homey. We fit two people in the queen bed and was able to add a small, twin-sized air mattress in the living area for a third person. It's located an easy ten minutes from the nearest F, G, and R trains, making it very convenient. A great place to put your head down for sleep!

  • The apt was just as advertised and just what we needed. Our host was extremely flexible on the arrival time and even more so on the departure day (I arrived with a broken foot and couldn't carry around the suitcase all day so she generously allowed us to keep the keys until mid afternoon when we caught our train). While small, the bed was comfortable, the AC worked like a charm and we had more than enough room for two of us to enjoy dinner in the apt. Plus, cool coffee shop, wine store and beer hall within steps...

  • This apartment was not particularly clean and there were some rotting veg in the fridge when we arrived. We were also only supplied one towel for the two of us for 10 days. It would've been nice to have been told to bring towels if that was an issue.

Having said that, the apartment is very well situated for the subway and getting around in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The bed is comfortable and the shower is good and powerful so you have the essentials. Also, it's worth noting that there is no internet in the apartment, you have to borrow wifi from the neighbours.

  • The apartment is compact yet comfortable and is conveniently located from a number of amenities - 3/4 blocks from the train station, 2 blocks from a large grocery store, 5-10 minuet walk from a number of park slope restaurants/cafe's and a 15-20 minute walk from prospect park.

The owner is helpful, polite and respectful - not just during check-in and checkout but in case one has any questions during the stay. The apartment has a number of good books that one can read during the stay as well.

Recommended for young couples using airbnb.

  • The host was not there and we found the place so dirty. She said us that 2 girls rented it just before. We found rotten food in the fridge, the sheets have been used and not washed, the bathroom was dirty.
We were very disappointed and took a day to clean everything.
It's so sad because the appartment could be really cool.

  • The apartment is tiny, but it's enough for 2 people. It's fine for the price. Not too far from Park Slope.
