The road to the top of Mauna Kea is not far. World class beaches of the Kohala coast are 45 minutes away and America's most visited attraction, the Volcano National Park, is a one hour drive, that's if you don't spend an hour first, in old Hilo town.
Interaction with Guests
Only on an "as needed" basis. We live about 30 minutes away in Waimea town. We will meet you at the property at check in only, as needed. Our directions to the house are great and all information is there in a folder. Off grid living is the best!!
As quoted from the recently published: "My Year in A Yurt: It was this studio we stayed in. We absolutely loved the place, the lush grass-coverd rolling hills, the stately Ohia trees dotting the land, the ocean in the distance. It was so peaceful, so quiet, so healing."
Yes, you are far from the urban madding crowd in a peaceful, quiet and rural location. We are surrounded by green; green grass, green trees, and green plants everywhere with wild turkeys and the occasional wild pig running madly across the pasture. Nights are clear and stars are blinding. Rain is possible but more likely are 15 knot trade winds which keep the air clear and fresh at a cool 1600' elevation. Our place is an ideal location from which to explore all parts of the Big Island. However, it is a minimum 20 minute drive to the nearest town of any size, Honokaa town and 45 minutes to the best gold coast white sand beaches.
You will need your own car. Some limited public transportation, Heleon Bus service, is available at the bottom of the road to Hilo and Kona towns. Bike rentals are available in Honokaa.
Other Things to Note
You may find that on occasion a local rancher will drive down the road to water his cows in the acreage below our place. Also the neighbor dogs love to come visit our guests and you may see wild turkeys perched in the trees.
Rule No. 1, enjoy your self and make yourself at home.
Feel free to eat whatever food is there. We provide a fruit plate and eggs along with lox and bagels with creme cheese. Coffee, tea and Ovaltine is also provided. A special treat is Mamane Bakery honey nut pineapple bran muffins and pineapple upside down muffins. Other food is a contribution from previous guests so please feel free to help yourself.
Hello Vincent: Thank you for the kind review, which I have translated and posted below. We would love to have you back. We love France. My wife went to cheese school in Poligny.
"We spent six nights in paradise! First part is exceptional, quiet, in the middle of nature! Then the fully equipped, comfortable accommodation, one quickly feels at home either and we quickly want to never leave! And finally the home of our hosts, full fridge on arrival, discrete but available! We can only recommend this place!"
She was there to welcome us when we arrived and was responsive to texts. The listing was accurate. The food provided was perfect. We were essentially by ourselves, which was wonderful. The place was cozy and quiet. Spiders lived in many corners, but that's to be expected in the country. We had a wonderful time.
Our stay at Bailey and Baki's slice of paradise was wonderful! The space is huge and the kitchen comes fully equipped. We really appreciated the fruit and some breakfast food provided by the host. They were responsive and very kind when we met them briefly. The cell reception/wifi was weak and we did notice a bug or two, but that was a small price to pay for the beautiful accommodations that are far away from the touristy parts of Hawaii. We thoroughly enjoyed the extensive DVD collection and while we were comfortable at night, we made sure to leave the house by 10am every morning as it began to warm up quickly.. It is August after all! Thanks again for the lovely accommodations, we would definitely recommend this place, and we hope to return someday!
We had a wonderful time thanks to Baki and Bailey! The studio cottage was exactly what we wanted - super remote and quiet and so lovely! We were all over the island and found it to be a great place!
Bailey and Baki were lovely hosts and the property was amazing. Up the hill from the main road in a eucalyptus and native oak forest, you wake up to the sun, the birds and the occasional rooster crowing or cow mooing. It's about a 30-40 minute drive (depending on construction) to Waimea and Hilo, so pretty convenient for the N and E side of the islands, and even Volcanoes NP and Kailua Kona aren't long trips.
The bed is comfortable, the bath is amazing, and everything is well-stocked. It takes a little while to figure out the tankless water heater and the water pump, but if you wanna unplug for a while this is the place. Wi-fi worked great with my laptop, though.
Wonderful cottage, really was away from the madding crowd. Enjoyed the quiet and DVDs. The bed was insanely comfortable.
