The Space

The house was built in 1877, and beautifully restored by previous owners. It's 7 blocks from the Capitol square, on Lake Mendota across from James Madison Park.

I am home 50% of the year, and during those times, my intent is to rent the guest room on AirBNB, for 1 person (or 2, sharing the same queen bed). I will make special exceptions if you need 2 beds, as I have a queen futon bed in the office that I can also rent for an additional fee for the additional person. My bedroom is connected to the office, but with a curtain dividing the rooms at the doorway for privacy.

The first floor has an updated kitchen, 10-person dining room table, baby grand piano in the living room, and a gas fire place. Each floor has an outside deck, and there is ample space on front lawn and backyard for admiring the lake views from front and Capitol dome views from behind. It is a charming house, with all its historic features preserved over the years, coupled with the right upgrades the last few years (kitchen, bath, appliances, etc.). Walking out the front door, you cross the street and walk down a grassy park, 40 yards and into Lake Mendota! There is a small boat dock directly in front, and a sand volleyball court just to the left. Within 5 blocks, there are several coffee shops, restaurants (including Fore Quarter, recently ranked as Madison's best restaurant), and public transport. WIFI with SONOS sound system at your disposal through the house. Basement has washer and dryer. And you can use my bike to get around in warm months!

I travel 50% of the year, so you are likely to have the whole house to yourself. My neighbors are super friendly and are happy to help as informal local guides during your stay.

I don't have cable TV, but I do have a TV and DVD player in the office on second floor if you want to watch movies. The WIFI internet works great and is connected to a powerful music system that you can have access to via iPhone app.

There is parking on the street, and you can fit 2-3 cars in my private driveway.

Guest Access

Guests have access to my fully equipped kitchen, every room in the house, my bike, and my driveway if they bring a car. In the summer, they can partake of my garden and when I get a kayak, that too!

Interaction with Guests

I tend to be a very interactive host, offering food & wine to guests if I am cooking that night. I love to help guests find things to do in town, pick the right restaurants/bars, and if I am available can even drive them to the airport or the supermarket etc. But if guests prefer total independence, that's fine too.

Getting around

There is a bus stop a block from my house that can connect you to all of Madison via public transit. But you can easily walk from my house to the major downtown attractions, like restaurants, Overture Center, museums, and even the University.

Other Things to Note

There is a 2 lane main street (speed limit 25 MPH) right in front of my house, and unfortunately the guest room faces it and thus you will hear some traffic noise throughout the day. However, the view has usually compensated for the noise according to most guests.

  • I just stayed with Jeff for three nights and had a great time! The house is in a perfect location, just across the street from Lake Mendota and a park where you can go swimming and rent bikes. It's walking distance from the Capitol, State Street, and Union Terrace, and the accommodations themselves are very thoughtful and comfortable. The entire house is beautifully put together, and very clean.
Jeff himself is fun, interesting, gregarious, and a wonderful host! He stays busy with his own life but keeps in touch, so it's very flexible.

  • This place was delightful, even on rainy days. We were able to walk into downtown Madison and to numerous parks along the lakeshore. The house is comfortable and Jeff is a good host.

  • Jeff was an awesome host and house was nothing short of amazing. Jeff was very accommodating and did an incredible job of making me feel welcome. The house is beautiful and the view from the room (overlooking Lake Mendota) would never get old. The neighborhood is great! Jeff seemed to know everyone and I got to meet some great people.

The house is a short 10 minute drive from the airport and just a few blocks from the Capital Square which has some great food. You can cross the street right into James Madison Park for an nice walk.

Madison is a great town and this house is in a perfect little neighborhood with easy access to plenty of what the city has to offer. Will certainly be back if I make my way to Madison again.

  • Jeff's house is awesome! It's comfortable, nicely decorated, and well stocked for cooking. The house is just as pictured - or better! on a lovely residential street right across from Lake Mendota and a park.
Jeff was responsive if we had questions and willing to share his favorite local places. He's a very hospitable and friendly host. We would definitely return to stay here again.

  • As an AirBnB host myself, I want to reiterate the reviews written about Jeff and his Downtown Madison: Lakefront home are accurate to the nth degree!. All of them.

It's true the stairs are steep as is the driveway (I had him park my car and I never moved it!) and there is a fair amount of traffic on his street...however once those factors are acknowledged and accepted, this 1877 incredibly beautiful old home, the proximity to Sophia's and Forequarter Restaurant as well as James Madison Park and Lake Mendota right across the street and the very short walk to Downtown ranks his AirBnB as one of the very best...which of course includes Jeff, an absolutely charming and masterful host.

I stayed with him an entire week while vacationing and enjoying events at the Overture Center. He happened to be around all seven days also. It worked out smoothly: We kept in communication, easily coordinated the use of one bathroom, crossed paths on occasion, shared a bottle of wine on the front porch and my out of town guest and I even joined him and his friends for an evening of music at High-Noon. I had a great week and particularly loved my morning coffee on the small second story balcony overlooking the lovely European style backyard and flower gardens.

Oh yes, on my next visit to Madison I'll book him again (if I can get in).

So you are fair warned...don't wait till the last minute this place is a rare find.

  • Elegant, rustic decor, a gracious, accommodating host, and a comfy bed made my stay feel less like travel and far more like home. As my first airbnb experience, Jeff and his Madison Lakefront home have set the bar higher than it likely should be, but that's by no means a bad thing. Anyone taking the opportunity to stay here will find you simply couldn't ask for more in comfort, cleanliness, and service, and I couldn't recommend it more highly. Jeff's got a good thing going here, and you should stop in and be a part of it. You will not regret it.

  • 5 stars!!!! I stayed at Jeff's house for only one night and had the best time ever. My first experience as an airbnb guest could NOT have been better. From the very beginning Jeff communicated with me very well via text and email and made everything so easy and comfortable to truly enjoy my getaway from Chicago. The house is simply GORGEOUS, super clean, well decorated with beautiful warm colors, interesting artwork and furniture that is functional, fashionable and comfortable. Jeff's house is located in the most ideal location - close to the lake, rental bikes, the Capitol, State street and UW campus. Did I mention how fabulous the bed is? I had the most amazing sleep on the super comfortable foam mattress. In fact, I'm going to order one for myself. Jeff, thank you for a wonderful stay. Your hospitality is top notch and truly appreciated.

  • Jeff's house is in a great location, and the room was very comfortable with a gorgeous view (especially of the sunset!). Jeff responded to my questions quickly. I don't like to drive in Madison, so I was looking for a place that had a lot of walking options. Jeff's place is perfect--it's an easy walk to State Street, Willy Street, and the capitol area. I recommend it!

  • Jeffrey's home is wonderful, and although we did not get to meet him, he and his awesome housesitter Kym made sure we had everything we needed. We loved staying here (perfect location!) and I'm sure we'll be back.
