The house was built in 1877, and beautifully restored by previous owners. It's 7 blocks from the Capitol square, on Lake Mendota across from James Madison Park.
I am home 50% of the year, and during those times, my intent is to rent the guest room on AirBNB, for 1 person (or 2, sharing the same queen bed). I will make special exceptions if you need 2 beds, as I have a queen futon bed in the office that I can also rent for an additional fee for the additional person. My bedroom is connected to the office, but with a curtain dividing the rooms at the doorway for privacy.
The first floor has an updated kitchen, 10-person dining room table, baby grand piano in the living room, and a gas fire place. Each floor has an outside deck, and there is ample space on front lawn and backyard for admiring the lake views from front and Capitol dome views from behind. It is a charming house, with all its historic features preserved over the years, coupled with the right upgrades the last few years (kitchen, bath, appliances, etc.). Walking out the front door, you cross the street and walk down a grassy park, 40 yards and into Lake Mendota! There is a small boat dock directly in front, and a sand volleyball court just to the left. Within 5 blocks, there are several coffee shops, restaurants (including Fore Quarter, recently ranked as Madison's best restaurant), and public transport. WIFI with SONOS sound system at your disposal through the house. Basement has washer and dryer. And you can use my bike to get around in warm months!
I travel 50% of the year, so you are likely to have the whole house to yourself. My neighbors are super friendly and are happy to help as informal local guides during your stay.
I don't have cable TV, but I do have a TV and DVD player in the office on second floor if you want to watch movies. The WIFI internet works great and is connected to a powerful music system that you can have access to via iPhone app.
There is parking on the street, and you can fit 2-3 cars in my private driveway.
There is a bus stop a block from my house that can connect you to all of Madison via public transit. But you can easily walk from my house to the major downtown attractions, like restaurants, Overture Center, museums, and even the University.
Even in the coldest time of the year Jeff's place felt warm and welcoming. A GREAT location - easy to get around on the bus - stops almost directly across the street. Jeffrey was so generous - from picking me up from the shuttle upon arriving, offering a trip to the grocery store (and sharing his wine and cheese etc), to introducing me to some folks he thought would be a helpful resource (they were). He went above and beyond…. Thank you Jeff.
Jeffrey was very accommodating, and his place was ideally located, and very clean. Great place with a great view of the lake!
This is a truly great house. Even though it was built in 1877 and it was very, very cold out, the house was warm. There's only one bathroom in the place but it's the kind of thing you'd see in a magazine. Jeffrey has just had a new shower stall put in, and it's great.
Jeffrey was out of town when we stayed there but was easy to reach by text/emails. We had no problems at all. It's across the street from a park, and across the park is Lake Mendota. We saw a couple of ice-fishing tents on the lake.
The location probably can't be beat. We were there to use it as a base for skiing, but it was blocks from the state capital. We would be driving around to get coffee or whatever, and regularly end up driving towards the capitol building - an eye catching sight.
I've stayed with airbnb'ers 3 other times, but this is the best yet.
Lovely house on a lake with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Jeff was a really nice host, easygoing and helpful. You have to be willing to share a bathroom, since there is only one in the house, but if that doesn't bother you then this is an ideal place to stay. Great location, but also a nice place to hang out when you're not running around Madison.
Thank you Jeffrey for allowing me to enjoy the comforts of your home. It was a great get away while I explored some of Madison. Great location, easy reservation, and detailed instructions. I will recommend fellow travelers to consider your lovely home. Have safe travels, happy holidays.
What a great place to stay. The location can't be beat. The house is wonderful. And Jeffrey is an A+ host. I could not have had a better experience concerning accommodations in Madison. I'm already looking into a trip to Madison next year, and Jeffrey's place will be my first choice. I can't recommend Jeffrey's house any higher.
I recommend staying at Jeff's house wholeheartedly. He was a pleasure to talk to and a very considerate host. The whole house is beautifully decorated and excellent wifi and other amenities. On top of that Jeff went out of his way to leave breakfast items on the table for the guests and even entertained us with dinner and conversation one night. I was in Madison for a conference though and spent most of the time leaving the house early and coming back late. This was no problem as I had my own key and the neighborhood is safe and lovely to walk in, barely 10 minutes from Capitol square and right across from a beautiful lake. All in all, a very positive experience.
Jeff was a fantastic host for my short stay. He was incredibly prompt with communication before my arrival and was incredibly warm and relaxing to have as a host during my stay. I had to leave early, and I really appreciated his flexibility with my early wake up time:) Beyond this, the space and house is fantastic and has great charm. The location is ideal (right across from the lake) and the interior is just so welcoming and elegant. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Madison for business or pleasure!
I can't say enough about what a great stay I had in Madison and at Jeffrey's house. The neighborhood was fantastic. Saturday night I had dinner at Forequarter, a delicious and friendly place just around the corner, then walked to a show at High Noon Saloon, a great live music venue. Sunday morning, I found a cute, quiet coffee shop (the name escapes me) just a few blocks away and had my morning coffee while walking along the lake (of which I had an unobstructed view from my adorable, comfortable room at Jeffrey's). Madison is such a charming, pedestrian/bike-friendly city. I borrowed Jeffrey's bike to get all around town. Jeffrey was very accessible and easy to communicate with, and he wasn't even in the country during my stay. I highly recommend this spot in Madison.
Jeffrey was a wonderful host. The stay was extremely comfortable and close to where the venue is. Thank you VERY much Jeff for a great airbnb experience. Your place is definitely on the list of preferred places to stay in Madison.
