Douglas place was great to stay a bit loud but this was no problem for us. The place is near starbucks, pizza hut etc so really central and everything can be done by foot. The apartment is real cozy with a balcony we enjoyed.
Douglas and Sue are nice people, no issues with them. Location is walking distance to downtown Hilo. Great location. Douglas waited for me to arrive and handed the keys over to me. Feels like a bed and breakfast without the breakfast. The room has no AC but their are ceiling fans in the bedroom area which provide more enough air flow. I did hear the next door neighbors and the couple in the adjoining room but no real complaints. Hilo is a sleepy town. This is a real deal for people looking to stay in Hilo.
We enjoyed our stay. The rooms were comfortable and just what we needed after each day of sightseeing. Beautiful view of Mauna Kea from the balcony. We slept each night to the music of the coqui frogs. Doug and Sue were there to greet us and were available if we needed anything. If you are looking for a place to sleep, this is comfortable and the price is right!
Douglas greeted us right when we arrived and gave us the key to our room. The room was clean, and fairly spacious with a patio, small living room, bedroom, and bathroom. There was some traffic noise during the day, but it quieted down at night (except for the Hilo coqui frogs!). The location was very convenient for walking to downtown restaurants, so if you're looking to explore Hilo on foot, this is a great place. Not luxurious, but definitely a good value.
We stayed 4 nights in Doug and Sue's appartment.
They welcomed us the first day and gave us the keys and explained everything. They are a wonderful couple.
The appartment/room is as you can see in the pictures, wide, clean and confortable, and in Hilo Downtown. But you can park your car in the street without restrictions.
What I love about the place is that it has its own door to the street and private lanai. So you don't have to enter in somebody's home to get to your room.
The house doesn't have wifi, but there are couple of places near it (mcdonalds and starbucks) where you can get connected.
The only problem we saw was the noise of cars during the day (fortunately it decreases during the night). The house is facing a busy street in Hilo and you can hear the cars very loudly.
Before booking this place we did a research and the hotels in the area are very old and expensive, so we think this is a great place to stay in hilo.
Doug and Sue's space is located incredibly conveniently (a VERY short walk from the bars and restaurants in Hilo) and is a comfortable place to sleep 2-4 people (2 twin beds, plus a futon in the living space). The place was extremely clean and had some great outdoor spaces, including a front porch and a very cute breakfast nook with a great street view with the mountains in the background. Doug and Sue were friendly, super easygoing, and reliable in terms of communication. A minifridge, coffee machine, and free coffee made the morning very easy. This is a great choice in Hilo! Only one note: if, unlike us, you travel with valuables (laptop, etc.), you should definitely make prior arrangements to store them securely; we felt (and were) perfectly safe, but the aforementioned nook is so great because it opens right into the common space without windows or a real lock, which made the space breezy but also not the best place to leave expensive gear. This aside, though, this is a great budget spot that easily and comfortably sleeps 3-4.
