Mulawarman Ubud is arguably the best place to use as a base if you're visiting Bali; if you are looking for culture, comfort, nature and inspiration. Mulawarman is surrounded by most of the things that bring people to Bali - scenic rice fields, small villages, ancient temples, palaces, and amazing restaurants (cheap local Indonesian, raw food, vegan, organic etc.). Our central location in Ubud makes it easy to get to the mountains, beaches, and major towns.

For those who want to discover an "Authentically Balinese" luxury guest-house still preserved from the "tourist invasion" and which, according to the guidebooks, is one of the best places in town, come to Mulawarman. Situated 25 kilometers northeast of Denpasar, Ubud is nestled in the green folds of countryside carpeted with terraced rice fields and carved by deep river gorges. Despite the increase in tourism Ubud conforms the image of being an example of the place where tourism development is harmoniously integrated into the village life.

Guest Access

Guest will have access to the shared reading room upstairs in the main building and a shared eating area. There are no refrigerator in the rooms, but if you need to leave something in the fridge you can use the kitchen fridge.

Interaction with Guests

Ibu Wayan will be at the guest house to greet you or one of her staff. She will also make a delicious breakfast in the morning too for you. So yes, Ibu will be around to help you with anything you might need.

The Neighborhood

I love my neighborhood because it is safe and quite but, I can easily walk or get a motorbike taxi to go do something. While you're in my neighborhood you should do some yoga at the yoga barn or taksu. Have a massage at one of the many little places....Zen spa is my favorite. Go Antonio Blanco Painting Museum. Of course visit the Ubud Palace go to the temple. Then do some exciting shopping and bargaining at the Ubud Market. (email hidden) class. Have some gelato at Gelato Secrets. Then try to decide where to have dinner.......so many choices so much good food. Where ever you choose to eat don't miss eating at Sari Organic Restaurant in the rice fields this place is great for early sunset dinners and only 10-15min walk from Mulawarman. No Car access to Sari Organic you must walk or motorbike, amazing walk through the rice fields.
You have to go to Monkey forest and visit all the monkeys and please have someone in your group buy bananas. Now get the camera ready because it's going to be funny or a little scary depending on how much you like monkeys running to you and jumping all over you! Also only a 10minute walk from your room is the very hot and very cold baths with regular pool and sauna at the tjampuhan hotel that you can use for a small fee around $7 for the day. Walk down Jalan Monkey forest , that is the name of the main shopping road and there are a lot of restaurants, massages, and shopping on this road.

Getting around

Getting around is very easy in Ubud.
You can walk , get a motorbike taxi or car taxi.
We can help you rent a motorbike or car if you like. If you would like a day tour we can arrange that with driver. We can also pick you up from the airport if you like for a charge of rp.300,000 one-way.

  • Mulawarman - the Secret Hideaway is located a little bit outside just at the border of Ubud. It is a quite place with a beautiful garden and the staff is really nice.
Delicious breakfast with fruit platter, green banana pancakes and Kopi!

Only ten minutes of walking to the center, the market and the Ubud Palace.
Although there is an led light on the room key it mihgt be good to bring a torch.
At night there are no lights on the small path next to the little river that you have to walk to Mulawarman. (:
About twenty minutes to walk into the rice fields - perfect thing to do early in the morning!

If you are hungry follow the advice off the staff and got to Kecak Café!
There you can enjoy the delicious food of Ibu Wayan´s sister.

It was a pity that we didn`t meet Ibu Wayan because she was ill.
We hope you are ok - get well soon!!!

    Greetings from Hamburg

  • Wayan's secret hideaway is a bliss-filled 5 star accommodation; I loved it so much I changed my booking from 1 day to one week! This is truly the perfect place to stay in Ubud. It is extremely close to the main street where everything is located, yet set in an exotic location that has sweeping views of the rice fields and a gorgeous quite private outlook. It is very quite and perfectly positioned to unwind and enjoy Bali.

I felt so content staying here. It is sheer heaven! Wayan is the warmest and kindest Balinese Lady. She picked me up at midnight from the airport with a big smile and warm heart. She even brought me something to drink. Wayan is very thoughtful, extremely kind and generous.

Wayan taught me so much about Balinese culture and spirituality. I am so grateful to her. She even took me to a temple ceremony on the full moon. This was the most beautiful experience I had in Bali. Wayan has collected antiques for the last 27 years: her collection is truly outstanding. I am very grateful she took me to see her collection and learn a lot about her beautiful culture.

The rooms are beautifully decorated with Balinese antiques. The beds are extremely comfortable and had both fans and air-conditioning. I adored coming home after a long day site seeing to a warm welcome and a delightfully beautiful surrounding. The bath-tubs are beautiful and face the jungle, river and rice fields. This accommodation is true Heaven! Wayan cooked the most delicious green pancakes that were served with a beautiful selection of fresh fruits every morning. All the staff are very kind and attentive and work 24 hours to make your stay so incredible.

I loved staying here so much that I am changing my travel plans to go back next week. I want to see Wayan and stay in this truly divine secret hideaway. It is a luxurious home away from home. I enjoyed every minute, I highly recommend this as the perfect place to stay in Ubud. I will make it my new home in Bali. It is 100% heaven! Thank you Wayan for making my stay in Bali such a memorable experience in beautiful Mulawarman!

  • My friend, Ranjani and I, stayed at the Mulawarman residences with Wayan and her staff. Overall, we had a good and pleasant stay at the Mulawarman residence, however there were some mix-ups and miscommunications that occurred here and there, largely, if not entirely due to some language barrier issues. The impression we ended up receiving is that Wayan, as well as her staff and other Indonesians, who don’t speak English extremely well, were just aiming to please the tourists and visitors, so even if they did not understand a question, they would just be quick to say “yes” and try to be as accommodating as possible, and sometimes to a fault.

The room itself was just as the pictures on AirBnB showed them to be, although it was slightly smaller than we originally thought. The sheets were clean and the bed was always promptly made right after we would leave. We were so grateful that the room came with air-conditioning, because sometimes the heat in Ubud can be so hot and unbearable, it would be so nice to just come home and unwind in a cool room. There was also the trusty mosquito bed netting, to help protect you from any unwanted bugs when you were sleeping. The bathroom literally had the shower and toilet right next to each other, with no shower enclosing area… which was fine, but definitely something that we had to get used to. Overall, the room itself was fine and decent for the price that you pay. One other thing to note is that, at night, the pathway to Mulawarman is completely dark, because there are no lights to light up the way, although Wayan was able to provide us with torches/flashlights.

Overall, we feel that despite the miscommunications that happened along the way, Wayan tried extremely hard to make our stay as pleasant and enjoyable as possible. We would say that, as long as you are wary that there may be communication issues, and that the homestay is a bit off the secret path, that Mulawarman is a warm and comfortable place to stay in overall, and that the staff truly do their best to make you feel welcomed and at home.

  • i have travelled a lot in my life and stayed at a lot of places, but the stay in mulawarman was really special and brought me a lot of joy and wayan ( the host) who will always stay in my heart. she makes the best pancakes, really cares about every single person who stays in her home. she treats everyone like a family member, which is really special and unique. the room looks exactly as beatiful as on the pictures, it was really clean and confortable, i especially loved the small details like fresh flowers on my bed. wayans stuff brought me every morning to my yoga studio, i really appriciated it.
i enjoyed the nature, beatiful ricefields and especially the time with wayan and her stuff.
i will miss you wayan and i will definetly come back to your lovely home.
thank you so much for everything.
    warmly,
    irena

  • Wayan and her husband are AMAZING! They are so welcoming and communicative . She made us the BEST banana pancakes for breakfast and I wish I could have had more.. They also offered to take us to the airport the next morning - it was about 3 hours of traffic and they did not care , they just wanted us to get their safely . Very nice of them- she is like a second mom.

Their place is awesome. You get to really see the way of Bali living and so much culture here in Ubud. The room was very clean and AC worked very well ( you need it). I love how the front doors open to a forest, it is so relaxing and beautiful. The staff were also amazing and friendly . They made you feel like you were at home.

Location is great- 10-15 min walk into the Main Street. Definitely visit the monkey forest. We walked there in about 25 minutes. Also, although a bit pricey, you just try Mozaic Restaurant down the street ( we took a cab for very cheap since roads are dark)- it was amazing.

Thanks guys for making our experience here great ! :)

  • We stayed at ibu wayan for four days. After she arranged a pick up for us from seminyak she welcomed us with open arms. She even made a birthday dinner for one of the guests that night. The rooms at this place are very clean, simple but sufficient. The rice fields are right around the corner and so is the mainstreet. Our last night she made us a goodbye dinner. This woman truly made us feel at home. I would recommend this honestly to everyone who wants to stay at a clean simple place and doesn't want to pay much.

  • We had a "just fine" stay at this place, we booked for room 6, but when we arrived, Wayan give us room 5, apparently she said was better. First of all, at room 5 there was no internet at all, we always need to get closer to the kitchen to try a good connection. Second of all, it is a little overpriced compared with other places much more nicer. Moreover, the owner is very focused to sell her business all the time, sometimes a little bit pushy to try to sell us her services (tours, massages, laundry, etc), and, being honest, you can find better prices outside in the main street.
    Anyway, not to bad.

  • We stayed for about 4 nights in this family run guesthouse, each morning starts with a fruit platter, coffee and plenty of food. The rooms were simple, comfortable and secure. Wayan the lady who runs the place is one of the warmest people I have been lucky enough to meet.

  • This is an excellent choice for anyone visiting bali. Firstly homestays are generally a better experience than the impersonal hotels and resorts, especially if you are planning to stay in Ubud, and secondly this is a fantastic homestay.

Before arriving we were slightly worried about the location (we thought we were trading location for a more authentic experience). We were completely wrong, the location is absolutely perfect for exploring ubud by foot as well as other towns by car.

Wayan is an amazing host. We were treated as family and made to feel relaxed and welcomed. On the first night we arrived we were immediately treated to a fresh papaya juice which absolutely hit the spot. On the morning we checked out our flight was at 6am and wayan woke up at 3am to make us breakfast before personally driving us to the airport with her husband! These are just a couple of examples of what made it a perfect stay for us. Wayan goes out of her way to match the service of a luxury hotel with the personality of a homestay and we'd recommend this to anyone going to Bali.
