Mulawarman Ubud is arguably the best place to use as a base if you're visiting Bali; if you are looking for culture, comfort, nature and inspiration. Mulawarman is surrounded by most of the things that bring people to Bali - scenic rice fields, small villages, ancient temples, palaces, and amazing restaurants (cheap local Indonesian, raw food, vegan, organic etc.). Our central location in Ubud makes it easy to get to the mountains, beaches, and major towns.
For those who want to discover an "Authentically Balinese" luxury guest-house still preserved from the "tourist invasion" and which, according to the guidebooks, is one of the best places in town, come to Mulawarman. Situated 25 kilometers northeast of Denpasar, Ubud is nestled in the green folds of countryside carpeted with terraced rice fields and carved by deep river gorges. Despite the increase in tourism Ubud conforms the image of being an example of the place where tourism development is harmoniously integrated into the village life.
Guest will have access to the shared reading room upstairs in the main building and a shared eating area. There are no refrigerator in the rooms, but if you need to leave something in the fridge you can use the kitchen fridge.
Ibu Wayan will be at the guest house to greet you or one of her staff. She will also make a delicious breakfast in the morning too for you. So yes, Ibu will be around to help you with anything you might need.
I love my neighborhood because it is safe and quite but, I can easily walk or get a motorbike taxi to go do something. While you're in my neighborhood you should do some yoga at the yoga barn or taksu. Have a massage at one of the many little places....Zen spa is my favorite. Go Antonio Blanco Painting Museum. Of course visit the Ubud Palace go to the temple. Then do some exciting shopping and bargaining at the Ubud Market. Take a balinese cooking class. Have some gelato at Gelato Secrets. Then try to decide where to have dinner.......so many choices so much good food. Where ever you choose to eat don't miss eating at Sari Organic Restaurant in the rice fields this place is great for early sunset dinners and only 10-15min walk from Mulawarman. No Car access to Sari Organic you must walk or motorbike, amazing walk through the rice fields.
You have to go to Monkey forest and visit all the monkeys and please have someone in your group buy bananas. Now get the camera ready because it's going to be funny or a little scary depending on how much you like monkeys running to you and jumping all over you! Also only a 10minute walk from your room is the very hot and very cold baths with regular pool and sauna at the tjampuhan hotel that you can use for a small fee around $7 for the day. Walk down Jalan Monkey forest , that is the name of the main shopping road and there are a lot of restaurants, massages, and shopping on this road.
Getting around is very easy in Ubud.
You can walk , get a motorbike taxi or car taxi.
We can help you rent a motorbike or car if you like. If you would like a day tour we can arrange that with driver. We can also pick you up from the airport if you like for a charge of rp.300,000 one-way.
We stayed at ibu wayan for four days. After she arranged a pick up for us from seminyak she welcomed us with open arms. She even made a birthday dinner for one of the guests that night. The rooms at this place are very clean, simple but sufficient. The rice fields are right around the corner and so is the mainstreet. Our last night she made us a goodbye dinner. This woman truly made us feel at home. I would recommend this honestly to everyone who wants to stay at a clean simple place and doesn't want to pay much.
We had a "just fine" stay at this place, we booked for room 6, but when we arrived, Wayan give us room 5, apparently she said was better. First of all, at room 5 there was no internet at all, we always need to get closer to the kitchen to try a good connection. Second of all, it is a little overpriced compared with other places much more nicer. Moreover, the owner is very focused to sell her business all the time, sometimes a little bit pushy to try to sell us her services (tours, massages, laundry, etc), and, being honest, you can find better prices outside in the main street.
Anyway, not to bad.
We stayed for about 4 nights in this family run guesthouse, each morning starts with a fruit platter, coffee and plenty of food. The rooms were simple, comfortable and secure. Wayan the lady who runs the place is one of the warmest people I have been lucky enough to meet.
This is an excellent choice for anyone visiting bali. Firstly homestays are generally a better experience than the impersonal hotels and resorts, especially if you are planning to stay in Ubud, and secondly this is a fantastic homestay.
Before arriving we were slightly worried about the location (we thought we were trading location for a more authentic experience). We were completely wrong, the location is absolutely perfect for exploring ubud by foot as well as other towns by car.
Wayan is an amazing host. We were treated as family and made to feel relaxed and welcomed. On the first night we arrived we were immediately treated to a fresh papaya juice which absolutely hit the spot. On the morning we checked out our flight was at 6am and wayan woke up at 3am to make us breakfast before personally driving us to the airport with her husband! These are just a couple of examples of what made it a perfect stay for us. Wayan goes out of her way to match the service of a luxury hotel with the personality of a homestay and we'd recommend this to anyone going to Bali.
We had a very short, quick stay at Mulawarman. Overall the place was a great value, it is within walking distance to Ubud Center so motorbike and taxi are not really necessary. It is hidden down a small alleyway overlooking a beautiful ravine. Ibu and her staff greeted us immediately upon arrival with water and smiles, although we had to rush quickly out. Breakfast was delicious, the green pancakes are a must try! On the downside, we were only able to connect to the wifi in common areas, it didn't work in our room. Also, shop around for taxi and tour prices, they seemed a bit high.
My Ubud story begins at Depasar International Airport. I had organised my airport transfers from Mulawarman. I highly recommend this, as i like eaze and didn't have to haggle with the taxi Drivers.
The driver himself was Ibu Wayan's husband. Already i could tell this was a family operated outfit, which i am very familiar myself.
I arrived around 8pm in Ubud, so it was dark. Once i got to our destination, there was a two minute walk to the property itself, through this alleyway along a stream. I was feeling excited as i love properties off the beaten path.
I got straight in and checked in with no problems.
The next morning i woke up from the very comfortable bed and opened my doors to a little oasis.
There are two chairs outside, so it was nice to sit in the morning sun.
My room was the end room, which was the best for privacy.
I slowly made my way to breakfast, which is provided for.
It alternates between "Pisang Goreng"(Deep Fried Banana) & Fluffy Green Pancakes all made lovingly by Ibu Wayan herself. Her lovely helpers from the nearby hospitality school helps you to either tea, coffee and or bottled water.
For the price point of this property, i thought the inclusion of breakfast was a real winner.
Ibu Wayan makes time for everyone at breakfast, and it's a nice way to start the day with other guest, who are all equally lovely.
The location is up a hill at the beginning of the main street(Jalan Raya Ubud). Within five minutes you are in the middle of everything. So for me the location was amazing.
My Must Do as recommended by Mulawarman is as follows:
*Ice-cream @Various Parlours
*Massages @Sang Spa
*Live Music(depending on the schedule) & Food @Casa Luna/Bar Luna
*Shopping @Jalan Monkey Forest
All up Ibu Wayan & the team at Mulawarman are warm, hospitable and above all really accommodating.
Thank you Ibu Wayan and all charming staff. I will definitely be back again when i am in Ubud.
Wayan wants to be called second mother and offering us such a warm stay she made us indeed feeling like in our own home. Her rooms are so well catered, super clean and pancakes in breakfast are delicious. Her whole family are so kind people and arranged also our pick-up from airport.
In Bali everyone offers to provide services, but you have to be picky not get ripped off. If you decide Wayan's place as your accommodation in adorable Ubud, then make sure you order her the special local whole duck. So yummy and for sure one of the best dishes we had in Indonesia in total.
Thank you Wayan and see you soon again!
Mulawarman is a great choice if staying in Ubud. The location is perfect. At the Ubud Palace end of town, so still very close to the major spots in Ubud town, but a few minutes walk off the main road so you still get peace and quite. The accommodation is set back in a beautiful spot amongst nature overlooking a small river and some rice fields. The entrance is off a narrow path winding around a small river and is extremely dark at night (you will need a torch - which they will provide you with).
One of the distinguishing factors about staying here is the fact that it has a definitive 'homestay' type feel about it. While you can most definately go about your own business if you wish, Ibu really welcomes you into her family and makes it feel like home. You feel a much greater connection, both with Ibu and her family, and other guests (great if your travelling solo), than a stock standard hotel.
As it was low season in Bali, and there was a room free in the main house (nicer rooms), Ibu upgraded me to the bigger room with no charge for my last two nights! My departure out of Bali was also very early morning, and Ibu and her husband both came to the airport to drop me off at 3am in the morning (well beyond the call of duty)! In short, a much more personalised and intimate experience than staying in a hotel, and one I would thoroughly recommend.
Mulawarman is a relaxing tropical oasis. My room was clean, comfortable and beautiful. Enjoy your time outside your room on the front porch or get to know other guests at the kitchen table in the garden area while surrounded by lush greenery and the rice paddy in the distance (I made wonderful friends here!). Ibu Wayan and her family are warm, welcoming and their spirituality and daily offerings will bring you into the Balinese culture instantly. I recommend you take them up on their offer to pick you up from the airport-- it will eliminate the additional stress after you've been traveling and they will bring you right to your paradise greeted with friendly ginger tea and Ibu made me a fried banana drizzled with honey! They will bring you into their family to make your time in Ubud comfortable and very memorable. Ibu can make recommendations to help you get to wherever you would like to go around the town, the island on tours and to and from the airport. She and her family are a gem in Bali -- my Balinese family. Not to mention she is a wonderful cook too. Ibu, I tried your chicken satay recipe tonight! Suksuma, suksmuma, berkat, berkat.
We had a wonderful experience being part of Ibu Wayan's family. She and her husband picked us from the airport, then they treated us with a warm welcoming dinner and helped us feel we are at home. There was always someone around when we needed any help or information. This home stay is a hidden gem near the main street of Ubud. The pictures in the profile give a good idea of the place. The nearby Sari organic restaurant situated in-between the rice fields is not to be missed.
