Mulawarman Ubud is arguably the best place to use as a base if you're visiting Bali; if you are looking for culture, comfort, nature and inspiration. Mulawarman is surrounded by most of the things that bring people to Bali - scenic rice fields, small villages, ancient temples, palaces, and amazing restaurants (cheap local Indonesian, raw food, vegan, organic etc.). Our central location in Ubud makes it easy to get to the mountains, beaches, and major towns.
For those who want to discover an "Authentically Balinese" luxury guest-house still preserved from the "tourist invasion" and which, according to the guidebooks, is one of the best places in town, come to Mulawarman. Situated 25 kilometers northeast of Denpasar, Ubud is nestled in the green folds of countryside carpeted with terraced rice fields and carved by deep river gorges. Despite the increase in tourism Ubud conforms the image of being an example of the place where tourism development is harmoniously integrated into the village life.
Guest will have access to the shared reading room upstairs in the main building and a shared eating area. There are no refrigerator in the rooms, but if you need to leave something in the fridge you can use the kitchen fridge.
Interaction with Guests
Ibu Wayan will be at the guest house to greet you or one of her staff. She will also make a delicious breakfast in the morning too for you. So yes, Ibu will be around to help you with anything you might need. Though I should tell you Bali has many Ceremonies all year round, so if Ibu Wayan is gone . She is either preparing for a Ceremony or going to one.
I love my neighborhood because it is safe and quite but, I can easily walk or get a motorbike taxi to go do something. While you're in my neighborhood you should do some yoga at the yoga barn or taksu. Have a massage at one of the many little places....Zen spa is my favorite. Go Antonio Blanco Painting Museum. Of course visit the Ubud Palace go to the temple. Then do some exciting shopping and bargaining at the Ubud Market. Take a balinese cooking class. Have some gelato at Gelato Secrets. Then try to decide where to have dinner.......so many choices so much good food. Where ever you choose to eat don't miss eating at Sari Organic Restaurant in the rice fields this place is great for early sunset dinners and only 10-15min walk from Mulawarman. No Car access to Sari Organic you must walk or motorbike, amazing walk through the rice fields.
You have to go to Monkey forest and visit all the monkeys and please have someone in your group buy bananas. Now get the camera ready because it's going to be funny or a little scary depending on how much you like monkeys running to you and jumping all over you! Also only a 10minute walk from your room is the very hot and very cold baths with regular pool and sauna at the tjampuhan hotel that you can use for a small fee around $7 for the day. Walk down Jalan Monkey forest , that is the name of the main shopping road and there are a lot of restaurants, massages, and shopping on this road.
Getting around is very easy in Ubud.
You can walk , get a motorbike taxi or car taxi.
We can help you rent a motorbike or car if you like. If you would like a day tour we can arrange that with driver. We can also pick you up from the airport if you like for a charge of rp.350,000 one-way.
The only house rules we have are to be mindful to us, to other guests , to the environment , and to yourself.

If you are traveling with small children please be aware that we are located on the edge of a High Ravine. You are responsible for your children , please watch over them:)
We hope that all guests can truly relax and enjoy themselves while staying with us in Bali.
Nice room, very close to nature and the main streets of Ubud. Ibu Wayan makes the best pancackes in the world!
The host was very nice with me! Gave me a free upgrade, good breakfast and was just super warm and friendly when I arrived. Place is a little bit hard to fine... especially since there are TWO restaurants named "sari organic" in Ubud (one is the real thing, the other a copycat) so I was kind of starting from the wrong one to try to find this place! It's kind of hidden away in a little lane, so you really need to know. Try not to do it at night like me - day will be easier.
I am glad you enjoyed your stay. Yes, we are snuggled in the tropic setting and can be a little hard to find. We will work on getting a bigger sign out front on the road. If other people are looking we are next to "Sari Organic in the Rice Field" restaurant. We hope you will stay with us again. Take care and have a wonderful year.
We were so disappointed with this AirBnb. It is our first bad experience so far :(
The pictures make the room seem very bright & clean, but really it was dark, damp and had many spider webs.
Our sheets smelled musky & damp when we arrived and I asked the young man working to change them, which he did. All the staff we met was very kind, but very little english and hard to communicate.
The wifi was not always available (1 day we were not able to connect at all and the staff just shrugged and said "yes, no wifi") and when we did have connection, the signal was very weak.
If you look at the price of accommodation in Ubud, this is not worth price charged. The only positive thing is the location - which is fairly central - but mind that there is no car access (and scooter is dangerous on narrow pathway) to Mulawarman.
We never met Ibu Wayan.
We had a great time at Mulawarman. The pancakes for breakfast were awesome. The rooms are open so there were a few Mosquitos but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a mosquito net (provided).
We did not have a positive experience here and would never return or recommend it. The space is not as described and not how it appears in pictures. The host was also unresponsive when we encountered issues, which made for a very unsettling few days.
Ibu Wayan was very welcoming and kind when we got at the secret hideaway. She offered us coffee and upgraded our room. The location was off the main road but accessible and as the title said hidden which we appreciated because Ubud is quite busy in some parts. The common area also has a lot of charm. The pancakes in the morning were excellent :) . However the room was not as modern as the photos depicted and the bathroom was moldy. The wifi didn't work 3/4 of the time which wasn't convenient at all to plan our trip. Also, Ibu is the only person that speaks english. The staff could not really help us when she was away and thus communication wasn't great. Hopefully Ibu was very helpful and she planned our cycling tour and cooking classes. She also got us really good deals to the Gilis and back. She took such good care of us that we nicknamed her Mama Bali. We would recommend this place because it is a good value deal and it is quiet. However don't expect good wifi to plan your trip.
Thanks Ibu and Ali for taking good care of us! -Julia and Ana
Sorry to break the line of ecstatic comments, but I would not recommend this place for several reasons.
Let’s start with something positive > the place is quiet and the rooms are nice, the staff is friendly, the breakfast in the garden is ok. Now let’s go for the rest.
- COMMUNICATION : We did not get any answer to our Airbnb emails & requests prior and after our arrival. I assume the manager use Airbnb as a booking platform, and nothing more. Don’t expect to get much contact on that side.
- PRICES : I would not recommend to book this place through Airbnb, as you will pay a substantial fee, and a price higher than the local rates. If it’s not high season, have a look first and negotiate de price on the spot if interested.
- ACCESS : The access to the place is a narrow adventurous footpath, following a steep, rocky, dirty road and not lighten at night. This is not a nice stroll to go or come back after a visit in Ubub. Rolling luggages and families are not welcome.
- STAFF : The staff is friendly but underaged and speak a very limited english. The will do their best to help you with your requests tough.
- WIFI : Poor wifi reception from the rooms. We had no wifi at all for 2 days, with absolutely no reasons or apologies given. As it was the 1st of the month, we assumed that they forgot to pay the bill.
- CLEANLINESS : The bedlinen and towels smelled strong and funny. They were not spotless, had a strange sticky touch and the mosquito nest was dirty. We had to ask for toilet paper and soap several times as there were not enough in the room.
- MANAGER : I don’t know what to think about this person. She was absent most of the time and let us deal with the young staff instead. To finish on a good note, she upgraded us in a bigger, brighter room upstairs for the end of our stay, we are grateful for that.
One more advice : double check the rates if she proposes you to book tour / transport / activity for you.
