  • My stay with Karen was great. She is a gracious and welcoming host and her home is ideally situated in central Maui making it easy to make short day trips to any place on the island. The room was clean and comfortable and quiet. The shared kitchen has all the amenities you need should you want to cook your own meals and Karen makes available her expresso maker for a fresh cup of coffee in the morning. Nearby Makawao is a historic Hawaiian cowboy town with quaint shops and restaurants. I would definitely recommend staying here to any of my friends coming to Maui for the value and the location. And if you want to try kite surfing, Karen is definitely the person to learn from. Plus some of the best wind and kite surfing in the world can be found nearby.

  • I wasn't at the house much because I was busy exploring but Karen was a great host. House is located in the middle of the island and the bedroom is pretty simple. If you're looking for a resort experience on the beach, this is not it. If you want to stay on Maui with a local and see the countryside, then this is a great place to stay!

  • I spent 4 nights at Karen's place, using it as base to make a number of trips around the island by car.

Makawao is in "up-country" Maui, with a slower, easy-going pace that I find far preferable to the bustle of the resort towns elsewhere on the island. From the house you have a superb view down to the coast and to Kahului and beyond (the NW part of the island). The house is in a superb location for trips along the Hana highway, up to the summit of Haleakala and around the bottom of Maui.

The room itself was very comfortable, with a separate bathroom/shower for guest(s) and you have free roam of the kitchen/living space too.

Karen has been on the island for more than 25 years and I had numerous chats with her about whales, kite-boarding and life on the island.

I had a very enjoyable stay at Karen's place and would happily go back on another occasion.

  • What a wonderful stay! Karen was an excellent host, the accommodations were great, especially the view, and staying with a few other guests only added to the experience. I would stay with Karen again in a heart beat.

  • Karen has been an amazing host. The location of her house and the beautiful view over the coastline were great. My room and bed were very comfortable, Karen is an artist and her beautiful artwork is displayed throughout the house and adds a wonderful athmosphere of island life. I enjoyed every minute of my one week stay. Karen even let me borrow one of her surfboards. Thanks, Karen.

  • Karen is a wonderful host - easy going and great to talk with. Her home is very comfortable with incredible views overlooking sugar cane fields and the island coastline below. Creative architecture was used to enhance the views making for wonderful sunset viewing.

Unfortunately, there is a downside to being surrounded by sugar cane fields - roaches. My first couple of nights I only saw a couple in my room. This being my fourth time to the Islands, I'm aware of the bug issues and wasn't surprised by a couple. (I've even been to Belize and you should see the critters there.) What I have never encountered before, from friends homes to hostels, is turning the light on after 10pm and finding the ceiling crawling. (FYI: Maui roaches have wings.)

I would love to recommend Karen's home, provided she takes proactive measures to evict the unwanted guests. I can respect her decision to have a poison free home, but something does need to be done. The roach motels handed out are not sufficient.

Decide what your comfort zone is and book accordingly.

    Response from Karen:

Kelly arrived at the height of the awful roach disaster. I have since had the place thoroughly treated. Living on Maui you get used to some bugs but I have never really gotten used to roaches so can understand others discomfort with them.

I keep the house spotless, all food in the fridge, and allow no food in the bedrooms, this is the first time I have had a problem with them. These particular guys were coming from outside. When they harvest the cane fields, (where they live) some fly this way and get in through the screen doors.

    Super apologize to Kelly !!

  • Karen is very pleasant, organized, and gave me space. I rented a room at Karen's charming home for a week. I had my own bathroom, full access to the kitchen, the living room, the patio, the garden, and the parking space. The house is gratefully quiet to sleep. The view is startlingly impressive, overlooking the sugar cane fields, from the Makawao hill, down to the coast, more astonishing to experience in real than what the pictures can convey. And with her telescope pointed at the beach, in the mornings I examined the wind conditions, blowing on the water and the trees far away, and glanced at the kites flying above the forest canopy, before I was headed to Kite Beach at Kanaha Park. Each morning Karen and I talked about kiteboarding, weather forecast, she gave me tips to improve my riding, and we talked about gear repair. It was like personal lessons while having breakfast. Truly a plus. And thru her school Aqua Sports I took personalized lessons to further improve my skills, and rented two kites. I even met one of the kiteboarding legends at her house. Thank you Karen!

  • Karen was a thoughtful and helpful host. Her home has a beautiful view and a great kitchen. She encourages you to make yourself at home, and creates a very relaxed, friendly environment. Karen was very open and warm, she even offered me a ride to the bus stop!
