I’d rate this listing as a 4 stars hotel suite. If you want a 5-6 stars suite, I’ve 1 on my profile under LUX Suite by Orchard. The rate will be bit higher then this but it will still be less then ½ of what you’d paid for a 5-6 stars suite in SIN.
First thing first. I’d rate this listing as a 4 stars hotel suite on the 3rd floor without elevator. If you want a 5-6 stars suite, I’ve 1 on my profile under LUX Suite by Orchard. The rate will be bit higher then this but it will still be less then ½ of what you’d paid for a 5-6 stars suite in SIN.
WongKaiWai inspired boutique suite, conveniently located near Orchard Rd, Shopping Mecca!, this quaint refurbished 2-bedroom retro apartment is in the heart of Singapore's prime real estate. With only a 5 min walk to Novena Square and Novena MRT, it's the centre of the centre of Singapore. (If you perform a (website hidden) search on Novena/Balestier you will understand why.)
This apartment is quiet, tranquil and relaxing, but once you hit Novena Square, (again, only a 5 min walk) you will experience the vibrancy and youthfulness of the area. It's the perfect contrast for a traveler.
This kind of building in Singapore is a dying breed. To compliment the feel of the retro dwelling, I designed this suite with actual 50’s interior decorations, and a few modern modifications. The furniture was collected from antique stores around Singapore. Everything in this apartment was designed with a high level of comfort and lifestyle in mind. I drew a lot of my inspiration from the films of Wong Kar Wai. You can expect nothing less than 5-star boutique hotel service from me. The satisfaction of my guests reign supreme in my B&B business.
Food around this place is plentiful and cheap, most importantly there are famous eateries, restaurants and cafes that are open 24/7. You won’t go hungry.
Novena/Balestier also has a historical importance. Here is another reason why you want to stay here...
From sugar cane plantations to shops filled with sweet and savoury delights, Balestier is an area that offers a taste of history. From tigers in the woods to temples with deep roots, Balestier Road tells a tale that spans nearly 180 years, and has borne witness to Singapore's remarkable journey from a British trading post to a modern city-state.
Today, Singaporeans make a beeline to Balestier Road to feast on chicken rice and bak kut teh. Others come for a wide selection of goods to light up their homes and add sparkle to their bathrooms. But behind the five-foot ways that still line much of Balestier Road, there are other discoveries to be made. This district was where key moments of the 1911 Chinese Revolution were hatched and classic Malay films were shot, where coffee was, and is still, brewed in the traditional way, with conversations shared over freshly baked loaves of bread and flaky confectionery.
A joined effort by the National Heritage Board and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, The Balestier Heritage Trail guide book, which is provided for your use during your stay, is the result of extensive archival research, and interviews with residents and business owners who have witnessed the growth and development of Balestier Road. This guide will help serve as a reminder, or even an occasion for discovery, of Balestier's rich heritage.
So put on a pair of sturdy shoes, dress for the tropical heat and arm yourself with a camera. Experience for yourself the charm and colours of a place that has seen such tremendous change, and yet remains a thriving reminder of Singapore's past and peoples.

I want to welcome you to be part of our history and stay at my carefully curated and decorated dwelling.
Since you are here already, let me take this opportunity to introduce myself, of course you can skip this part if you want to. I used to be an entertainer, starting out as a model in San Francisco when I was sixteen, followed by being a MTV and Channel V VJ before I got myself a talk show spot in Taipei, Taiwan. I have now traded glitz and glamor for a Ph.D. I’m quite open on (website hidden); please do check it out if you want to know more about who Rick Tan, (website hidden), really is. I do believe that wisdom is knowledge through one’s experience, so let’s trade stories about our life experience.
I also feel that everything is possible - all you need to do is ask. I’ll make your stay in Singapore an amazing experience that you will brag about it to your friends for years to come. I have been told time and again that I’m a great ambassador for Singapore, so rest assured you will go back with plenty of knowledge, insights and wonderful moments.
You might want to do the touristy thing, but if you are looking forward to a true local Singapore experience, then I’ll show you around whenever I want to catch a breather from my Ph.D. research, I’ll let you know so that you can plan in advance. I look forward to seeing you in Singapore.
Please be aware that pre-approve does mean that it's confirmed. It's all first come first serve. Please do not wait till the last moment because others might have booked it already and I won't be able to do anything about it.
And also I do price my place very competitively, hence I would I don't give anymore discount.
I'm sorry I have to put this disclaimer down for there were many incidences where people ask me why they can't book it after they have been pre-approve and that's the reason why.
By the way, if there is only one guest for the booking, one room will be locked for maintenance purposes.
Last but not least the rule of Aibnb in Singapore; you do not talk about Airbnb, hence there should absolutely be no hosting of party at the premise.
Thanks for checking my dwelling out.
p/s there isn't any elevator.
Interaction with Guests
I'm reachable all the time.
If there is only one guest for the booking, one room will be locked for maintenance purposes.
Absolutely no parties allow. Respect thy neighbor and don't not be loud at night. Please do take care of my curated antiques.
I do price my place very competitively, hence I would I don't give anymore discount.
In Singapore, the rule of airbnb is not to talk about airbnb with thy neighbors. Just tell them that you are our friends staying over.
Just help save the enviornment by turning off all the lights and air-cons when you leave the apartment. And please do talk if there is anything i can do make your stay here more comfy.
Wifi password is (phone number hidden) on Novena Suite Network which is also my cell phone number.
This was my second stay at Rick's place in Novena. The first time was in February 2014 with my niece. I loved it so much that this time I came back with one of my adult sons to visit relatives.
In addition to my comments in the previous review (Feb 14) describing what we found charming about this little piece of "times gone by" in Singapore, I must say that I still appreciated the industrial strength ceiling fans! We were very happy to put the air-con on for an hour or two in the evening and then leave it to the fans to circulate the cooled air. You can't do that in a hotel! I don't like having the air-con on all the time.
My son was impressed with the Internet speed!
With our Singapore Tourist Pass (buy at Chinatown MRT), the (website hidden) app and the GrabTaxi app, getting around was easy. The bus stop was so convenient on Thompson Road, we actually found it just as easy using the bus system as the MRT. Yes, there is the walk up the hill and the stairs, but it was a good way to work off all the great Singapore food that we indulged in!
The place was as good as I remembered it from last time. And communicating with Rick and Aimee is always easy and friendly.
We will be back.
My host had his representative meet me there at the apartment on both visits, we arrived at 4am the first time! Never had any issues and he even called me midway through my stay to see if we needed anything.
This is our first time of using airbnb. Rick's place is very charming, it was very clean and well maintained. We liked it how he decorated the apartment. The neighborhood was quiet and peaceful, lots of privacy was provided and beds were comfortable. Rick was very responsive and immediately provided us with extra bed when requested. We had early check-in at 12 noon was flexible during check-out as we were rushing to send my old folks to the airport. Amenities such as Wifi, Apple TV, Washer/Dryer, Fridge, Toaster & Nespresso Machine were provided. My old folks loved the feel of the place, and it is at a very convenient location. Was it specified that there was no lift and a bit of climbing was required? It was a bit difficult for old folks to climb the staircase :D
Otherwise, we highly recommend this place to stay. Thanks for hosting us Rick!
Rick's place is immaculately beautiful. Well-equipped facilities. Wifi is fast. Conveniently located to amenities, malls and MRT. So easy to get around. His place is clean, charming, peaceful and spacious. Love the antique touch in everything. He even had lots of chilled drinking water prepared for us. Rick was helpful in helping us get around and leaving our luggages there after the check out. He gives us a lot of privacy. I would stay longer if there werent clashing reservations. Highly recommend it!
Enjoyed staying at Rick's Novena flat. Location is extremely convenient, easy access to food and the MRT system which is the subway system in Singapore. Rick is easy to get a hold of and does not bother you with visits or calls during your stay. I would stay here again.
Stayed with parents and brother at Rick's vintage-decorated home in Novena. Location was perfect as we got to where ever we wanted super easily. MRT and food was close by. Use grabtaxi app if you need taxi (best way to go for 4 ppl + rain) and they always find the apt easily. Rick has been very professional since day one of booking and providing all the info required in very detailed messages. So organised!
