Interaction with Guests
We will be present on the property during your stay to answer questions and introduce you to the amenities of the neighborhood and the surrounding area so that you can make the best use of your time during your stay. Otherwise, you will have a very private Caboose up on the hill with incredible views of the Santa Monica Mountains.
The surrounding neighborhood is rich with a colorful history as well as many local shops and stores, restaurants, theaters, winery's, etc. that we can direct you to once we know what it is that you are looking for. We have lived on the property and in the area for over 35 years and are happy to share our neighborhood with you.
Since we are located three miles from any public transit, it is advised that our guest's have their own vehicle with which they can use to get around with. There is adequate and secure parking for our guest's vehicle near the Caboose, and a private entrance gate to the property that we will show our guest(s) how to open and close.
Other Things to Note
We have been told that there is a romantic quality to spending the night in our luxury caboose, it is perfect for a couple to share an intimate evening together in a peaceful, private place. The setting and surrounding property lends itself to the creation of some unforgettable photography.
There are wild peacocks and a variety of other wild birds that over the years have found that our property is a "safe haven" to the point that one would think that they are almost domesticated pets. Hummingbirds, Parrots, Snowy egrets, Grey Herron's, Woodpeckers, Bluejays, Crows and Ravens, etc. A large variety of hawks and falcons live and hunt in the area and at night, you may hear the sounds of owl's calling to each other from the treetops.
There is an onsite metal sculpting and iron working studio on our property that is active from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm each weekday Monday through Friday. For the most part, any metal working sounds will be held to a minimum during the morning hours when we have guests. From 3:00 pm on, there is no work done in the studio and all is quiet. We also ask that unless invited into this studio area, during the above mentioned working hours that this studio and the people in it be left undisturbed.
SMOKING: Out of respect for those that do not smoke and are offended by the left over odor there is a "NO SMOKING INSIDE THE CABOOSE" rule. Out of respect for those that enjoy smoking, you may smoke out on the deck or almost anywhere outside if you choose, we ask that our guests that wish to smoke observe that we are in a delicate semi-wilderness environment and that smokers use all reasonable precautions with extinguishing their smokes in a safe and responsible manner, and that they do not leave any Smokers Trash (Butts & Filters) laying about (We supply a 1940's covered ashtray for outside smoking :) )
PETS: It is best if we do not allow guest's to bring pets. We raise West Highland White Terriers and have other dogs on the property. We also have a Great Dane and a Chihuahua all of whom are friendly, are used to dealing with the wild peacocks and each other. Bringing other animals especially other dogs into their territory can be disruptive and make for time spent dealing with that instead of relaxing and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
What an amazing place this is. The Caboose is very well remodeled, with so many details it makes the place look as a real home - because it really is. We arrived a bit late but Douglas went above and beyond, picking us up on the road and showing us the way in. This has been one of the best experiences of my trip and is so worth it. Stay here next time you are in Malibu!!
The hosts Douglas and his wife were very welcoming, we felt taken care of. The mini-fridge had excellent snacks and we were able to see Douglas's artwork. We were celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary by finding refuge outside of the city. Even though it was hot, the air conditioner made it very comfortable. The caboose and decor were well done, a nice hideaway. Good hiking/walking nearby. A lovely experience all around.
Without a doubt the highlight of my visit to California was my stay at the Caboose. Douglas is an exceptionally gracious and hospitable host. The Caboose with it's surrounding property is outstanding; I could not recommend a stay here more highly.
We were provided with helpful and fun things to do along our drive to the caboose, and greeted by douglas on arrival. Douglas was very welcoming and keen to show us around his art studio, introduce us to the peacocks, and help us settle in. We wish we had more time here!
One of the most interesting places I've ever stayed in - very cool! I won't ever forget my day driving down California Route 1 from San Fransisco along the coast to stay here and sitting on the roof of the Caboose at 2am drinking beers looking at the stars (and looking out for coyotes).
Diana and, especially, Douglas (with whom we interacted the most) have earned the title of "superhosts." From Douglas's detailed directions to his lunch recommendation and hiking advice, Douglas went out of his way to make our too-short stay as enjoyable as possible. He was also kind enough to show us around his art studio. The property itself is comfortable and beautifully situated.
Don't overthink this, folks. You get to stay in a train caboose in the middle of a national recreation area with wonderful hosts. Oh, and you might get to feed the peacocks.
Douglas kept close contact with us during our drive to the Malibu Hills, he met us at the Hwy junction where he even made a dinner reservation for us at The Old Place. He then lead us the final short distance to the wonderful old Train Caboose where he carefully made sure we knew how to work and where to find everything from snacks and breakfast treats to peanuts for the peacocks. the Caboose was so cute and comfy. Our stay was all that we hoped it would be and more. Comfortable bed, beautiful and interesting area, gracious host, and all in all a very unique experience.
