Interaction with Guests
We will be present on the property during your stay to answer questions and introduce you to the amenities of the neighborhood and the surrounding area so that you can make the best use of your time during your stay. Otherwise, you will have a very private Caboose up on the hill with incredible views of the Santa Monica Mountains.
The surrounding neighborhood is rich with a colorful history as well as many local shops and stores, restaurants, theaters, winery's, etc. that we can direct you to once we know what it is that you are looking for. We have lived on the property and in the area for over 35 years and are happy to share our neighborhood with you.
Since we are located three miles from any public transit, it is advised that our guest's have their own vehicle with which they can use to get around with. There is adequate and secure parking for our guest's vehicle near the Caboose, and a private entrance gate to the property that we will show our guest(s) how to open and close.
Other Things to Note
We have been told that there is a romantic quality to spending the night in our luxury caboose, it is perfect for a couple to share an intimate evening together in a peaceful, private place. The setting and surrounding property lends itself to the creation of some unforgettable photography.
There are wild peacocks and a variety of other wild birds that over the years have found that our property is a "safe haven" to the point that one would think that they are almost domesticated pets. Hummingbirds, Parrots, Snowy egrets, Grey Herron's, Woodpeckers, Bluejays, Crows and Ravens, etc. A large variety of hawks and falcons live and hunt in the area and at night, you may hear the sounds of owl's calling to each other from the treetops.
There is an onsite metal sculpting and iron working studio on our property that is active from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm each weekday Monday through Friday. For the most part, any metal working sounds will be held to a minimum during the morning hours when we have guests. From 3:00 pm on, there is no work done in the studio and all is quiet. We also ask that unless invited into this studio area, during the above mentioned working hours that this studio and the people in it be left undisturbed.
SMOKING: Out of respect for those that do not smoke and are offended by the left over odor there is a "NO SMOKING INSIDE THE CABOOSE" rule. Out of respect for those that enjoy smoking, you may smoke out on the deck or almost anywhere outside if you choose, we ask that our guests that wish to smoke observe that we are in a delicate semi-wilderness environment and that smokers use all reasonable precautions with extinguishing their smokes in a safe and responsible manner, and that they do not leave any Smokers Trash (Butts & Filters) laying about (We supply a 1940's covered ashtray for outside smoking :) )
PETS: It is best if we do not allow guest's to bring pets. We raise West Highland White Terriers and have other dogs on the property. We also have a Great Dane and a Chihuahua all of whom are friendly, are used to dealing with the wild peacocks and each other. Bringing other animals especially other dogs into their territory can be disruptive and make for time spent dealing with that instead of relaxing and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
My boyfriend and I rented the Air B&B simply for its rustic look and unique style for a portrait photo shoot. We were expecting the scene to be wonderful based on the photos but were blessed with so much more.
Douglas was a wonderful host who took us into his intimate artist space to share his story with us as well as the story of the ranch itself. He made us feel like we were back home in Minnesota ( He's THAT NICE ) and we really felt like we were hundred of miles away from the city.
There were literally dozens of hummingbirds bussing everywhere, butterflies, bluejays, parakeets, and peacocks outside of our windows and at our doorstep.
The place was clean, comfy and had personal touches of history throughout. Although it was historic it didn't " smell" historic and was very well kept. Douglas also provided us with continental breakfast and checked on us to make sure everything was alright, going the extra mile even after check in.
This is very close to Zuma beach which we frequently surf at and was next to a cool old town and great hikes. We will FOR SURE be going back. Great place for artists, great place for romantics, and wonderful place for people who want a getaway from fast paced LA vibes.
What a great experience! The caboose was decked out with everything you could want (including Pellegrino and a cheese plate). Very relaxing. And Douglas was really great--he made us reservations at the Old Place (which is needed) and talked us through some of the good hiking trails. I'll be back.
With the Caboose, Douglas + Diana have created such a special place in the Hills, where time seems to stop, there are peanuts for the local wild peacocks that pop by, the only plan is to sit on the deck and enjoy the wine you brought, and you can actually hear the hummingbirds zoom by. What a modern way to enjoy this unique piece of American history! Thoughtful touches throughout. Our stay was a last-minute plan, and thank you, Douglas, for planning quickly and getting us a dinner reservation at The Old Place, which is worth a stop on its very own -- arrive HUNGRY to enjoy huge servings. We parked the car at the Caboose, then just walked 5 minutes to the Old Place. How often do you walk to dinner in LA? I know we sure dont! We only had 1 overnight, but it was the perfect respite to feel miles and miles away from the Friday LA traffic and city stress. We enjoyed the sunset, caught the lunar eclipse later that night, then made some french-pressed coffee ensuite in the morning (thanks to our hosts for the treats!). The locals near here all seem to know about the Caboose! Great spot to make as basecamp as you enjoy Malibu's vineyards, park trails, beaches, or just simple quiet time. It's hard to believe the Caboose is only 40 minutes away from Burbank. We are happy to have found this special place -- and hope to find another time to enjoy it again! Thank you, D + D!
Our 1 night experience in the caboose was simply amazing! Douglas is a thoughtful, talented and a very welcoming host. He made sure to meet and lead us to his unique property before sharing plenty of information and local knowledge about the area.
The Caboose itself has everything you would ever need, complete with a patio of peacocks! No, really 3 peacocks greeted us in the morning. It was clean, tidy and the bed was very comfortable.
The location is something out of a storybook. In the middle of the of the Santa Monica Mountains and only 15 minutes from the ocean!
A bonus for us was the opportunity to explore Douglas' studio and see his work. Stunning.
Thank you for everything, Douglas! We will see you again soon :)
A rare and beautiful experience. Definitely take a weekend here if you have the chance. Douglas and Diana are incredibly kind and welcoming, and go over and above as hosts.
We had the most perfect evening at The Caboose. Douglas and Diana did everything to make us feel not just welcome but at home, from detailed instructions to yummy snacks left in the fridge to making all the arrangements for a delicious dinner at The Old Place. We wished we could have stayed longer and will definitely be back. Everything is as pictured or better, a magical setting, a unique experience, not to be missed.
Doug and Diana went above and beyond both welcoming me to the area and their home. The train was well accommodated and I enjoyed my free time around the property despite my short stay.
My husband is an artist (Sculptor and cubist painter) I invent products (babies and canines) We love to travel and make new friends :)
We have a Great Dane Harlequin, a Chihuahua and 4 West Highland White Terriers.
Peacocks come and visit, there is a 40 foot Koi pond, lots of sculptures on 2.5 acres.
On mondays the two men crew of 25 years will start working nearby and maybe wake you up! If you are a light sleeper only book your stay for Friday and Saturday nights so you can sleep in.
Sometimes you will hear coyotes howl during the night or full moon.
