Mulawarman Ubud is arguably the best place to use as a base if you're visiting Bali; if you are looking for culture, comfort, nature and inspiration. Mulawarman is surrounded by most of the things that bring people to Bali - scenic rice fields, small villages, ancient temples, palaces, and amazing restaurants (cheap local Indonesian, raw food, vegan, organic etc.). Our central location in Ubud makes it easy to get to the mountains, beaches, and major towns.
For those who want to discover an "Authentically Balinese" luxury guest-house still preserved from the "tourist invasion" and which, according to the guidebooks, is one of the best places in town, come to Mulawarman. Situated 25 kilometers northeast of Denpasar, Ubud is nestled in the green folds of countryside carpeted with terraced rice fields and carved by deep river gorges. Despite the increase in tourism Ubud conforms the image of being an example of the place where tourism development is harmoniously integrated into the village life.
Guest will have access to the shared reading room upstairs in the main building and a shared eating area. There are no refrigerator in the rooms, but if you need to leave something in the fridge you can use the kitchen fridge.
Interaction with Guests
Ibu Wayan will be at the guest house to greet you or one of her staff. She will also make a delicious breakfast in the morning too for you. So yes, Ibu will be around to help you with anything you might need.
I love my neighborhood because it is quite but, I can easily walk or get a motorbike taxi to go do something. While you're in my neighborhood you should do some yoga at the yoga barn or taksu. Have a massage at one of the many little places....Zen spa is my favorite. Go Antonio Blanco Painting Museum. Of course visit the Ubud Palace go to the temple. Then do some exciting shopping and bargaining at the Ubud Market. Take a balinese cooking class. Have some gelato at Gelato Secrets. Then try to decide where to have dinner.......so many choices so much good food. Where ever you choose to eat don't miss eating at Sari Organic Restaurant in the rice fields this place is great for early sunset dinners and only 10-15min walk from Mulawarman. No Car access to Sari Organic you must walk or motorbike, amazing walk through the rice fields.
You have to go to Monkey forest and visit all the monkeys and please have someone in your group buy bananas. Now get the camera ready because it's going to be funny or a little scary depending on how much you like monkeys running to you and jumping all over you! Also only a 10minute walk from your room is the very hot and very cold baths with regular pool and sauna at the tjampuhan hotel that you can use for a small fee around $7 for the day. Walk down Jalan Monkey forest , that is the name of the main shopping road and there are a lot of restaurants, massages, and shopping on this road.
Getting around is very easy in Ubud.
You can walk , get a motorbike taxi or car taxi.
We can help you rent a motorbike or car if you like. If you would like a day tour we can arrange that with driver. We can also pick you up from the airport if you like for a charge of rp.300,000 one-way.
The only house rules we have are to be mindful to us, to other guests , to the environment , and to yourself.
When it comes to smoking, we would like it done outside on your porch and not in your room.
If you are traveling with small children please be aware that we are located on the edge of a High Ravine. You are responsible for your children , please watch over them:)
We hope that all guests can truly relax and enjoy themselves while staying with us in Bali.
Unfortunately staying in Ibu Wayan was a very disappointing experience.
We have booked the room #2 (one of the most expensive ones). Even though the room looks pretty similar to the pictures there is something very strange about it that is not referred in the description.
Basically the wall that divides the room and bathroom does not go all the way up to the roof and both our bathroom and the neighbours bathroom have a kind of open roof! As result... Whenever the neighbour goes to the toilet it is as if he is seated inside our room taking a dump ....
It was really really uncomfortable, a completely lack of privacy! We ended up leaving after the second night because of this.
We loved our stay! Tucked off the main road, this is a great location while staying in Ubud. Ibu Wayan was such a warm and welcoming host. I would recommend hiring Mulawarman for the airport pickup as the guest house would be hard to find at night in a metered cab. Overall, a great experience and value. We are already looking forward to our next stay here!!
Wayan is great host, she remind of me my mom, as she always try to care her guest and treat them as a family. I feel warm welcoming whenever I met Wayan. House itself is bright and view from the room is great, I specially like the sunrise from the terrace. Breakfast is also great even though I only had once due to my morning yoga class, Try pandan pancake! Water pressure is a bit low, which normally happen in Ubud. staff in this house is also very very kind.
Thank You Very Much for Staying with Us and hopefully we could welcoming you again in your next as our Family's, :)
We also would like to say thank you for your review and your suggestion for improvement in this year,we will do batter and the best for our Guest future.
Many Thank and Happy New Year,
Putu Surya and Ibu Wayan Family's
I recently stayed at Mulawarman for an entire month while completing a yoga teacher training and can honestly say it was a WONDERFUL home away from home experience! Wayan and her staff were warm, accommodating, generous and truly like family! They always greeted me with a smile and kind word...and often on my late night returns from class, offered to bring me fruit and/or ginger tea to my room. I was very fortunate to have had such a lovely, above and beyond experience in Ubud!
My room proved to be a true sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city. Beautiful marble floors, antique furniture, a cozy bathroom with tub and an AMAZING view of the rice fields via my terrace. The lighting was perfect, with so much sunlight streaming in, but at night perfectly dark...with only the sounds of tranquility filtering in.
The banana pancakes are a must try!
I also took Wayan up on her offer for laundry service and was pleasantly surprised by how superbly clean and fresh they arrived all 3 times! A wonderful standard at a truly good price!
Internet was a bit off and on, so this was probably the most challenging part of my stay. Most people wouldn't have a problem or need it at all, but since I was needing to email in course work, it was a little tricky.
Overall, my stay was wonderful and I would highly recommend Mulawarman to anyone visiting Ubud! The location near the edge of town (away from all the traffic mid city) was most welcoming and relaxing, offering easy walks to the rice fields....and Wayan's hospitality truly make this a "must stay" location!
I had a great stay at Mulawarman Guesthouse! The room was nice and it is set in a beautiful area. The breakfast was amazing and the staff were very helpful. I did not meet the host personally, as I heard she was ill, but had no problems and there was no need to contact her.
The only negative comment I have is about getting to the actual guesthouse. The narrow walkway is fine during the day, but at night it is very dark and quite scary-especially if you are nightblind! I would recommend the guesthouses in the area get together and maybe install lighting of some sort.
We had a wonderful experience with Ibu Wayan and her warm welcome, with all her family. They are extremely helpful and always try to make your stay as best as possible. They propose but do not impose : Ibu Wayan proposed us a guide, but we prefered to go with a French-speaking guide that we discovered on Internet and it was absolutely not a problem.
Her home has a great advantage : it is at the same time really the center and very calm. You access it by a small sent where only scooters and pedestrians can go.
Finally, Ibu Wayan's cooking is as good as all the previous commentaries say. Her Nasi Goreng is the best I ate in Bali.
We were exhausted when we arrived directly from the airport and we were in full shape when we departed 3 days later.
I hope to come back in Ubud, not only to see things that I did not have time to see, but also for the pleasure of seeing Ibu Wayan again.
Oh, I was about to forget: we forgot our passports in a drawer. Ibu Wayan took a 2 hours drive to bring them to our hotel and we had to fight with her to make her accept some money in compensation. That's Ibu Wayan, so generous and kind an nice :-)
I LOVED my stay at Mulawarman. This room (#2) had an incredible view of palm trees & rice fields. Some days I would sit on the private balcony and watch the trees & birds for an hour or so and journal. It is so overwhelming beautiful that a few times I cried tears of joy! Photographs cannot capture the beauty of the view (I tried..)
I stayed in the room for a month (!!) lucky me :) It felt like home right away. Wayan, the host, was more like a mother. She is warm-hearted, generous and loving. She makes the best pancakes for brekky & I learned to slow down & connect instead of rush off each day. We had some in-depth conversations and became very close, as did the other travelers staying there. I was there over Nyepi (Balinese new year which is a full day where you have to stay inside!). Wayan prepared us food the entire day and shared a lot of her culture with us. It was a very special day.
The room looks the same as the pictures. A/C works great. You get a great view of the sunrising through the mosquito netting in the morning ;) Each day I was offered complimentary coffee, tea or water when I came back "home." Wayan also arranged for a driver to take me around including to Tampak Siring (the holy water temple which is a must see!).
I hired a driver to take me to the airport (not through Mulawarman, someone I met in town) and Wayan joined me on my drive the the airport to send me off!! If you're looking for a beautiful place to stay that is a bit quieter (nestled away in nature) with a loving host, this is your place!! I will be back for sure :)
