Description

The Space

This listing is for the master bedroom and its private bathroom in a recently renovated beautiful 1200 sq. ft. home in the historic Holy Cross neighborhood. The room features a private bathroom w/ shower, shelf space, a closet, comfy queen size bed, desk, desk chair, lounge chair, and ceiling fan. I also have an extra bicycle which is included in the cost of renting this room.

Three miles down the road is the French Quarter and its special brand of madness. There are plenty of restaurants/bars/music over in the Bywater just across the canal, from one to two miles from here.

There's a bar next door to my place, which is unusual for this neighborhood as it's mostly residential. Around the corner from here is a semi-swank little cafe, that serves some very good (though a little pricey) New Orleans style cuisine.

Sometimes the bar next door is poppin' and this place feels right in the heart of New Orleans's craziness, and other times the bar is quiet and the house feels removed from it all. On weekend nights and holidays there's often some sort of block party happening over here.

Two blocks up is a bus stop that will run you to the Marigny/Bywater/French Quarter w/ ease. A bicycle is also included w/ the room.

This is a nice place and less cramped than your typical AirBnB listing in New Orleans. It is not a shotgun, which means (if you're not up on New Orleans-style livin') that bedrooms are truly private.

Also, I have no pets, though pets are an option w/ a deposit.

Guest Access

You'll have access to the house... like any old roommate situation. I'll have my room. You'll have your room. There's another bedroom someone might stay in. And the rest of the space will be shared, including whatever appliances I have... I have a washer-dryer. Musicians: I also have an 88-key digital piano if you need something to practice on.

Interaction with Guests

I've been interacting quite a bit with guests, but I make no promises. :) I'm a musician and travel sometimes. I also practice my music in the living room.

Checking in is painless though as I have a lock box w/ keys near the front door. The lock is a little tricky; you'll have to jiggle the key to get it to work.

The Neighborhood

This is the Holy Cross neighborhood of the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans. It was flooded during Katrina but it was not the neighborhood completely flattened by the storm. That hood is about three-quarters of a mile from here.

My favorite aspect of the neighborhood is my neighbors. There is a bar on one side of me owned/operated by Mercedes Gibson. On the other side of me lives her son John Gibson. Working in the bar are mostly Gibson family members. And hanging out down here are yet more Gibsons. I unwittingly moved into the middle of the Gibson family when I bought this house.

Much of the neighborhood is still blighted out from the storm, but the houses are steadily being reclaimed and renovated down here. It's a historic neighborhood so the houses are built in the old-fashioned New Orleans tradition mostly and there are a couple of funny-looking old 'Steamboat Houses' a few blocks from me near the levee, overlooking the river, that are sights on the tourist trail.

However, this is not a touristic neighborhood. That scene is to be found more next door in the Bywater ( one mile), Marigny (two miles) , and French Quarter (three miles) neighborhoods.

Getting Around

Two blocks up is a bus stop that will run you downtown w/ ease.

I've got a loaner bike too.

Other Things to Note

This is a nice place and less cramped than your typical AirBnB listing in New Orleans. It is not a shotgun, which means (if you're not up on New Orleans-style livin') that bedrooms are truly private.

Also, I have no pets. Though pets are an option, w/ a deposit ($100).

I'm a musician and recently a counseling student. I enjoy travelling with my guitar and sharing songs with strangers. I'm from Austin, TX and have been living in New Orleans since August 2012.

In my traveling days, I would head to Mexico at every opportunity and spend a week to six weeks visiting a new part of that majestic country. These days most of my travel is dedicated to music-making or seeing family.

I love books-on-tape, pop-philosophy, Erich Fromm, Schopenhauer, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Elliott Smith, Chris Elliott, Mike Judge, Paul Verhoeven. I can talk a lot of smack about technology worship, but like most modern people, I too am addicted to screens.

I'm a fan of New Orleans and I can help you find a good poboy and/or concert in town.

Also, I like to make breakfast, and should our mornings overlap, I'll fix ya up something too.
