Three-story brick home on the Stono River, 10-15 minutes from downtown Charleston. Panoramic view of the river and the Intercoastal Waterway with magnificent sunsets reflected in the water. Quiet neighborhood with several good restaurants.
Our house is situated on a river within sight of the Intercoastal Waterway with interesting views of passing boats and barges, as well as beautiful sunsets. An afternoon sail may be arranged. A number of weddings have been held on our patio and lawn--ideal, especially at sunset.
Guests have access to the four bedrooms, 2 baths (one with tub, one with shower stall), living room, dining room, kitchen, washer, dryer, screened porch, patio. Don't be put off by the fact that this is our residence. We are non-obtrusive, but there when you need info or a little TLC.
We love getting to know our guests, subject to visitor availability and preference. Fred is a great story-teller and has a vast storehouse of adventures to relate, especially those regarding sailing or lighthouses.
Riverland Terrace is very quiet with houses large and small and residents of all ages. This established neighborhood is very woodsy and has a well-known avenue of oaks that was once part of McLeod Plantation. And of course, there's the river!
The plantation is only a couple miles away and has a fascinating history, as well as original kitchen house, dairy house and 6 slave cabins.
There is a bus stop 2 blocks from our house with access to downtown Charleston and Folly Beach. Owners will assist with transportation when possible and may provide scenic tours.
There is a sofa bed in the green room that is ideal for young children. Also, a queen air mattress is available for the younger set, making sleeping space for a total of 11 guests.
There is also a beautiful 44' sailboat at our dock that sleeps four, available for an extra fee.
Guests may use the entire house, except the morning room and of course, our bedroom. :-) The screened porch and the patio are popular areas for dining, playing cards, or just hanging out.
Interaction with Guests
My husband and I enjoy chatting with and getting to know our guests, but only to the limits of your preference.
Riverland Terrace is an established neighborhood with lots of large live oaks and houses large and small. Within 5 miles of our house are numerous restaurants, shops, a movie theater, and a plantation complete with outbuildings and slave cabins.
A city bus runs through the neighborhood, but its circuitous route takes over an hour for a 15 minute trip.
Fred and I turn in fairly early, so nothing TOO raucous after 10:00pm. No worries about coming in late or hanging out in the living room or screened porch. No smoking, of course, in the house.
Joyce and Fred's home is beautiful. My guests and I felt so welcomed and well-cared for during our stay. Joyce went above and beyond to accommodate our needs, and I can honestly say there was nothing lacking during the course of our stay. Everyone was in awe of how beautiful and peaceful the house and grounds were, and I know we would have stayed longer if we could. The homemade breakfasts each morning were filling and delicious. Staying with Joyce and Fred is like staying with family, but better! We were comfortable and so happy during our stay. If we ever have a need, we would stay at Toad Hall again without a second thought.
We loved having a chance to enjoy this happy occasion. We tried to stay out of the way and let them have the house to themselves, but hearing the joyful noises and catching a glimpse of the festivities was wonderful.
Ann and Geoff, here's to a wonderful life together! I hope we can keep in touch.
We had 9 girls stay at the Toad Hall over a bachelorette party weekend and had the most wonderful time. Joyce was so incredibly sweet and helpful. The breakfast spread she made for us was so elaborate and delicious (cheesy eggs!). You really can't beat the view from the living room/sun room of the dock and river during sunrise an sunset. Thanks Joyce and Fred!!
Starting with a warm welcome, we were pleasantly surprised when arriving at the Wichmann house. We stayed for a week in this lovely riverside mansion which gas everything. Beautiful river views, luxury rooms and a lot of history. But even more we all were pleasantly surprised by the friendliness and kindness of our hosts, Joyce and Fred.
Yes, we all loved this place. We also loved the delicious breakfast Joyce prepared for us every morning. A breakfast made so very special because of the all the stories Joyce told us. We learned that every detail in the house has his own story. A story almost always connected to the immense sailing history of the Wichmann family.
We learned a lot of the local history by listening to their history, activities and adventures.
Thank you Joyce and Fred.
Joyce and Fred were the best part of our experience at Toad Hall. That is saying a lot considering the beauty of the property and the loveliness of the house. Our sons were fascinated by the history of Charleston and breakfast was often a opportunity for discussion. This made our family reunion joyous and rich. The location of the house, the relaxed atmosphere and the spacious rooms made our five days there feel comfortable and restful. Add that to the beauty of Charleston itself, the trip was a huge success!
Our family selected Toad Hall for our Thanksgiving Holiday. When we arrived we felt immediate southern old world charm and hospitality. Joyce and Fred were perfect hosts...kind, warm, informative, and accommodating. Toad Hall offers quintessential amenities which include amazing sunsets, plantation atmosphere, dolphin sightings, homemade southern breakfast, an inviting neighborhood, and a perfect location for all Charleston has to offer. Our visit was perfect and we felt at home. I highly recommend Toad Hall and will definitely return. Joe, Michelle, Natalie, Marie, Stan and Sandy
Joyce is a natural-born hostess, cheerfully accommodating 6 of us arriving from 5 directions, from a day early arrival to differing breakfast needs and everything in between. If you're lucky enough to book a stay at her gracious & comfortable waterfront home you won't be disappointed. I certainly recommend a stay at Toad Hall.
Joyce was a gracious & accommodating hostess to our ever changing & diverse group. Breakfasts were hearty and delicious - especially enjoyable out on the patio overlooking the water. Her home is spacious with easy access to Charleston, beaches, tourist sites and golf. Thanks again for hosting us!

Despite our gray hair, or lack of, my husband and I are fun-loving, active in the community, and enjoying life. We love sailing and any kind of boating and are fortunate to have our boats right at our dock.
My passions are my family, especially the grandchildren, my church, gardening, flower arranging, and chocolate! We have traveled a good bit and particularly enjoyed Australia, New Zealand, St. Petersburg, Norway, and Japan and have welcomed guests from all of those places and more.. We do all we can to make sure our guests feel at home without hovering.
I am retired after teaching from the elementary to the university levels. My last assignment was 10 years of teaching French at the high school and middle school levels.
