Toad Hall on the Stono River

House - Entire home/apt · Riverland Drive, Charleston, SC 29412, United States

Quiet, woodsy neighborhood on an expansive river with unbeatable sunset views. Fifteen minutes from downtown with ample parking. We have hosted friends here from various parts of the world for many years, offering a warm, relaxed atmosphere.

The Space

Our house is situated on a river within sight of the Intercoastal Waterway with interesting views of passing boats and barges, as well as beautiful sunsets. An afternoon sail may be arranged.

Guest Access

Guests have access to the four bedrooms, 2 baths (one with tub, one with shower stall), living room, dining room, kitchen, washer, dryer, screened porch, patio. Don't be put off by the fact that this is our residence. We are non-obtrusive, but there when you need info or a little TLC.

Interaction with Guests

We love getting to know our guests, subject to visitor availability and preference. Fred is a great story-teller and has a vast storehouse of adventures to relate, especially those regarding sailing.

The Neighborhood

Riverland Terrace is very quiet with houses large and small and residents of all ages. This established neighborhood is very woodsy and has a well-known avenue of oaks that was once part of a plantation. And of course, there's the river!

Getting around

There is a bus stop 2 blocks from our house with access to downtown Charleston and Folly Beach. Owners will assist with transportation when possible and may provide scenic tours.

Other Things to Note

There is a sofa bed in the green room that is ideal for children. Also, a queen air mattress is available for the younger set, making sleeping space for a total of 11 guests.
There is also a beautiful 44' sailboat at our dock that sleeps four, available for an extra fee.

  • Really enjoyed our stay at Toad Hall! Joyce is the best host. We came down for the Cooper River 10k run. We had four kids and my in-laws at the house. Joyce was so accommodating to us and was a delight to be around. The kids really enjoyed the personal tour Joyce gave them on their boat and the stories of her and Fred's adventures on the sea. The setting is beautiful! Azaleas and Wisteria were in full bloom. We loved sitting out on the patio having lunch under the moss draped oaks watching the boats go by on the Stono River. My family and I highly recommend this stay. We look forward to coming back soon.

  • Our stay with Joyce and Fred was one of the most enjoyable experiences that I have had on a trip (and I have had many). The house and grounds are absolutely gorgeous and very unique. Joyce immediately makes everyone feel like they are a part of her family which really makes the atmosphere lighthearted and warm. Fred and Joyce together are very knowledgeable and wonderful to speak with about the history of the Charleston area. I had brothers and sisters showing up well before I got there and Joyce had already made them feel right at home. The breakfast was outstanding: Eggs Benedict casserole (highly recommended), fresh fruit, grits and chocolate chip pancakes for my younger daughters. As beautiful and comfortable as the home is, Joyce's grace and charm rise above that to make the stay one that is unforgettable! We will definitely be back!

  • Joyce was a wonderful host for our family get together of 8 adults and 2 toddlers. The house is beautiful and right on the water, and it's an easy 15 minute drive to downtown Charleston. She treated us like family, which was perfect!

  • Joyce and Fred live in a beautiful wooded waterfront area very close to Charleston. Their house is very accommodating, clean and perfect for a large group. We were a group of 8 people and Joyce did not have a problem providing comfortable logging for all of us. Most importantly, Joyce and Fred are wonderful and made us feel at home. Joyce fixed us breakfast and provided excellent conversation and information about the area. I highly recommend anyone to stay there it will be your best choice.

  • We've had the most wonderful time in Toad Hall. Joyce and Fred showed us what Southern hospitality is all about. We were with 7 people including our 4 and 7 year old children. The rooms were perfect. Joyce prepared delicious healthy breakfast with a southern touch - eggs, bacon and grits. Unfortunately we could only stay for two nights, but we hope to come back in the future. Highly recommended!

  • Joyce and Fred live in a nice, quaint area that is backed up to a waterway, Their house is very accommodating and upscale. But most importantly, these hosts are the nicest people I've stayed with ever on Airbnb. Granted, they do live there while we stay, but it is BETTER that they are there because of their hospitality.

Joyce fixed us breakfast and provided excellent conversation. I highly recommend anyone to stay there as they have plenty of room.

About
Despite our gray hair, or lack of, my husband and I are fun-loving, active in the community, and enjoying life. We love sailing and any kind of boating and are fortunate to have our boats right at our dock. My passions are my family, especially the grandchildren, my church, gardening, flower arranging, and chocolate! We have traveled a good bit and particularly enjoyed Australia, New Zealand, St. Petersburg, Norway, and Japan and have welcomed guests from all of those places and more.. We do all we can to make sure our guests feel at home without hovering. I am retired after teaching from the elementary to the university levels. My last assignment was 10 years of teaching French at the high school and middle school levels.
