Three-story brick home on the Stono River, 10-15 minutes from downtown Charleston. Panoramic view of the river and the Intercoastal Waterway with magnificent sunsets reflected in the water. Quiet neighborhood with several good restaurants.
Our house is situated on a river within sight of the Intercoastal Waterway with interesting views of passing boats and barges, as well as beautiful sunsets. An afternoon sail may be arranged. A number of weddings have been held on our patio and lawn--ideal, especially at sunset.
Guests have access to the four bedrooms, 2 baths (one with tub, one with shower stall), living room, dining room, kitchen, washer, dryer, screened porch, patio. Don't be put off by the fact that this is our residence. We are non-obtrusive, but there when you need info or a little TLC.
We love getting to know our guests, subject to visitor availability and preference. Fred is a great story-teller and has a vast storehouse of adventures to relate, especially those regarding sailing or lighthouses.
Riverland Terrace is very quiet with houses large and small and residents of all ages. This established neighborhood is very woodsy and has a well-known avenue of oaks that was once part of McLeod Plantation. And of course, there's the river!
The plantation is only a couple miles away and has a fascinating history, as well as original kitchen house, dairy house and 6 slave cabins.
There is a bus stop 2 blocks from our house with access to downtown Charleston and Folly Beach. Owners will assist with transportation when possible and may provide scenic tours.
There is a sofa bed in the green room that is ideal for young children. Also, a queen air mattress is available for the younger set, making sleeping space for a total of 11 guests.
There is also a beautiful 44' sailboat at our dock that sleeps four, available for an extra fee.
Guests may use the entire house, except the morning room and of course, our bedroom. :-) The screened porch and the patio are popular areas for dining, playing cards, or just hanging out.
Interaction with Guests
My husband and I enjoy chatting with and getting to know our guests, but only to the limits of your preference.
Riverland Terrace is an established neighborhood with lots of large live oaks and houses large and small. Within 5 miles of our house are numerous restaurants, shops, a movie theater, and a plantation complete with outbuildings and slave cabins.
A city bus runs through the neighborhood, but its circuitous route takes over an hour for a 15 minute trip.
Fred and I turn in fairly early, so nothing TOO raucous after 10:00pm. No worries about coming in late or hanging out in the living room or screened porch. No smoking, of course, in the house.
Joyce was a wonderful hostess, providing us a warm welcome and lots of local information -- and also great coffee and a light breakfast in the morning (even though she'd said she didn't have time to make us breakfast and had adjusted the rate accordingly. She can't help herself when it comes to taking care of her guests!)
And she let us take over her dining room table to put together party favors for a charity gala.
Toad Hall is a lovely classic American home overlooking the Tono River, with beautiful bedrooms to stay in on the second and third floor, and the run of the gracious living room and front porch overlooking the river.
The neighborhood is wonderfully green, peaceful and private, with a couple great restaurants nearby and just a short 15-minute drive to downtown Charleston. We'd definitely stay again if Joyce would have us!
We enjoyed very much our stay at Toad Hall. Joyce is such a delicate host! This is a perfect venue for discovering Charleston and its surroundings whilst enjoying the quietness of the river shore after a busy day.
Joyce and Fred were very welcoming. The view was stunning. The breakfast was awesome each day. Our entire family felt very welcome the neighborhood was awesome. There is a playground close by that my two-year-old enjoyed very much.
Joyce & Fred, are the "Best!" We all came down to Charleston for the Cooper River Bridge Run®. They received us like family & made us feel right at home!
We hope to come back again soon! Joyce, Thank you for your awesome hospitality!
Joyce was a wonderful host to my family! We had extra family in town visiting and it was great to have them stay nearby. I highly recommend the property.
Joyce and Fred's home is beautiful. My guests and I felt so welcomed and well-cared for during our stay. Joyce went above and beyond to accommodate our needs, and I can honestly say there was nothing lacking during the course of our stay. Everyone was in awe of how beautiful and peaceful the house and grounds were, and I know we would have stayed longer if we could. The homemade breakfasts each morning were filling and delicious. Staying with Joyce and Fred is like staying with family, but better! We were comfortable and so happy during our stay. If we ever have a need, we would stay at Toad Hall again without a second thought.
We loved having a chance to enjoy this happy occasion. We tried to stay out of the way and let them have the house to themselves, but hearing the joyful noises and catching a glimpse of the festivities was wonderful.
Ann and Geoff, here's to a wonderful life together! I hope we can keep in touch.
We had 9 girls stay at the Toad Hall over a bachelorette party weekend and had the most wonderful time. Joyce was so incredibly sweet and helpful. The breakfast spread she made for us was so elaborate and delicious (cheesy eggs!). You really can't beat the view from the living room/sun room of the dock and river during sunrise an sunset. Thanks Joyce and Fred!!

Despite our gray hair, or lack of, my husband and I are fun-loving, active in the community, and enjoying life. We love sailing and any kind of boating and are fortunate to have our boats right at our dock.
My passions are my family, especially the grandchildren, my church, gardening, flower arranging, and chocolate! We have traveled a good bit and particularly enjoyed Australia, New Zealand, St. Petersburg, Norway, and Japan and have welcomed guests from all of those places and more.. We do all we can to make sure our guests feel at home without hovering.
I am retired after teaching from the elementary to the university levels. My last assignment was 10 years of teaching French at the high school and middle school levels.
