About this listing
Private room with double bed in downtown Victorian house - Free Wifi, shared fabulous bathroom(s) and kitchenette (fridge, coffee maker, kettle, micro, toaster, toaster oven - no stove). Easy walk to U of T, rep cinemas, cafés, Kensington Market
My house is a picturesque, warm, light-filled 3 storey Victorian family home in the heart of downtown Toronto. I teach during the day on the main floor and can accommodate guests in three individual private rooms on the second floor. Yours would be the cosy Red Room: it has a comfortable double bed, with desk, closet and antique armoire for your clothes. Perfect for one person or two who like to be close! It looks onto the brick side of the next door house, but it’s close enough to the front to get some sun from the West. Our street has old established trees, and despite being right downtown it is remarkably quiet.
Down the hall you'll find a shared spacious bathroom (new rain shower, separate deep tub with ancient but working jacuzzi, laundry facilities), a second washroom/powder room, and a kitchenette for breakfast, snacks and drinks. Sorry, no full scale cooking, just microwave and toaster oven, but the neighbourhood is full of good and inexpensive places to eat - we are located just above College Street in Harbord Village, close to the University of Toronto, right between Little Italy and Chinatown to the west and east; just south of Korea Town, and just north of Kensington Market with shops from all over the world, offering a wide range of food, plus art, vintage clothes, books etc.
The public transit system is excellent, with a streetcar stop at the bottom of the street and subway stations within 7 minutes walk. Bixi bikes can be rented close by, and taxis can be easily flagged on College Street. If you require parking, I can arrange a temporary street permit for a small fee.
The art gallery, museums and several theatres are within walking distance if you enjoy a good city walk, and the street car on College can take you right to High Park for a hike in nature - or to see the cherry blossom trees in bloom if you come in April. For cinephiles we are midway between two rep cinemas, The Bloor and The Royal, showing films from around the globe. The Spadina streetcar (5 minutes walk away) takes you right down to Lake Ontario, Harbourfront and the ferry dock for the Toronto Islands (15 min boat ride)
If you're wanting to maintain your fitness routine, there are 3 or 4 gyms/Y's and recreation centres in the neighbourhood which offer day passes; and post-workout (or for those who prefer more sedentary pursuits) there are internet cafes, libraries, bakeries etc.
My place is ideal for busy visitors looking for a comfortable base with the option to make a simple breakfast before they head out for the day. Coffee, tea, cream/milk, sugar, juices and small snacks are provided.
Guests have access to all the amenities of the second floor of the house. The ground floor is my personal and work space, and family bedrooms are on the third floor.
Interaction with Guests
I am happy to chat in the hallway but may not be around much. I value my privacy and will respect yours - I am usually available by phone to answer questions if we don't run into each other.
Location, location, location. Walking distance to many great neighbourhoods filled with cafes and shops: Kensington Market, Little Italy, Chinatown, Koreatown. 2 rep cinemas: The Royal on College and the Bloor Documentary cinema. 506 College streetcar takes you east to Yonge St and Eaton Centre, or west to High Park for walks in nature. Art Gallery and Royal Ontario Museum are within easy reach by transit or on foot. Spadina streetcar takes you south to Harbourfront, Queens Quay and the Ferry docks for Toronto Island.
Easy access to TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) streetcars and subway. You can take a bus and subway almost all the way to the house from the airport. Temporary parking permits available through City of Toronto website. Bus to Niagara Falls departs from bus station 20 mins away by TTC.
Other Things to Note
Ancient jacuzzi in the bathtub is noisy but effective for tired muscles or feet after a long day walking around the city. Rain shower is beloved of guests. All linens and towels provided, as well as basic toiletries and hair dryers. There is no stove in the kitchenette, just microwave and toaster oven (plus kettle, coffee maker etc). Laundry facilities are available with soap provided.
Please remove outdoor shoes and leave them in the hallway. Bring slippers or indoor shoes for warmth as the floors are hardwood and tile.
Quiet in the hallways is appreciated, since I teach on the main floor during the day.
Ours is a no smoking house - those who wish may smoke outside on the front porch.
In the bathroom please use the fan for 30 mins to remove moisture - it is quiet and will turn itself off.
Landline is available free for local calls only; please use a calling card for long distance.
Please use marked recycle bins for garbage disposal inside and out of house.
Kate was great! Everything was exactly as described. Clean and great location. Kate was also a wonderful host and extremely responsive.
Kate was a terrific hostess and made us feel very welcome. The room was cozy and suited us so well. Neighborhood was also wonderful as we were a few minutes walk from Kensington Market, Little Italy and China Town. We would defintely come back agaon.
Everything was perfect as can be. Exactly as expected. Very comfortable bed. Kate was easy to communicate with and was an excellent host in every way. Will definitely be a return guest.
Jolie demeure.
We were very happy with our stay at Kate's beautiful appartment. The location is perfect and the room was very cosy and clean. Kate was very helpful with organising arrival etc . I'll be recommending this listing to my friends and family.
We had a very pleasant three day stay with Kate. Her beautiful vintage home is in a lovely neighbourhood, a fantastic location for getting around. Our bed was very comfortable, the kitchenette was convenient and well stocked, and the availablilty of two washrooms assured us of access. Everything was kept very clean. Kate was very friendly and helpful. We would be happy to return.
We had a great weekend stay with Kate! She was very welcoming, and her lovely home had all the amenities we could ask for. The little snacks and tea in the kitchenette were a great bonus! Thanks Kate :)

About the Host, Kate
I'm a veteran freelance theatre artist: director, writer, teacher, working with diverse communities to tell their stories; I love opera, cooking, cycling - I don't own a car. Everything in downtown Toronto is easily reachable on foot, by bike or on our trusty public transit system. Last summer I joined a dragon boat racing team in our neighbourhood and paddled a canoe around Lake Temagami with my grown kids (they took me on a trip for an early birthday present - that's my photo). World traveler - favourite places: the mouth of the Amazon in Brazil, anywhere in Cuba, Boulder Colorado. I'm originally from London, England, my son lived in Spain (he currently lives in Hangzhou China and can speak Mandarin!), my boyfriend is Italian and his daughter spent 2 years in Paris, so we visit Europe a lot. Over the years, my house has received guests from Kosovo, Benin (Africa), Mexico, Denmark, Germany, France, Austria, Japan, China and all across Canada and the US. I value my privacy, and will respect yours - I teach the Alexander Technique in my home studio, so quiet during the day is appreciated. My kids have grown and flown - but sometimes fly back. They are actors and musicians. Je parle francais, mi hijo habla espanol, e il mio ragazzo parla italiano. Chi vediamo!
