This is a completely private and detached cottage, sharing the grounds with a 100 year old historic landmark (of "Major Importance" in Oakland's registry). This studio is filled with lots of art and everything a single or couple could need. Queen bed, stove, oven, microwave, toaster, complete bathroom (shower but no bathtub).
Abundant parking curbside at the house is always available.
This is the safest and most walkable area of all Oakland (right on the border of Piedmont), and also has very easy access to buses and Bart to SF, Berkeley, and the entire Bay Area.
5 minute walk (see Guidebook) to Trader Joes, Walgreens, several women's boutiques ranging from upscale to consignment, two toy stores and many great restaurants. If you're feeling like something fast, there's Chipotle, Noahs Bagels, two ice cream / frozen yogurt places, and four pizza places in walking distance (from NY-style by the slice, to Chicago deep-dish, to uber-Gourmet). For coffee, we have both Starbucks and Peets.
5 minute walk to several beautiful parks, playgrounds, gyms and public tennis courts (see Guidebook).
A little further walk to Grand brings you to another dozen shops and restaurants, including the very popular and hip Boot & Shoe, where celebrities are often seen (but not bothered - people tend to be understated around here).
The striking and historic Grand Lake movie theater, with the latest films in 3D and otherwise, is also just a 5 minute walk.
It's two miles - either a pleasant lakeside walk or a 5 minute drive - to some of the best nightlife in the Bay Area, including the Fox and Paramount Theaters, with many of the hottest bands and speakers (ranging from Condoleeza Rice to Paul Krugman) anywhere.
Tons of public transit. Several buses pick up and drop off on our block.
As shown in photos, there are more than a dozen steps up to the property. To me and all the guests so far, walking them feels Great. However, a few elderly people have inquired about the space and I've thought it a bad idea. Please consider if steps are a problem for you.

Private separate building from main house. Small out door space with chairs. Very cozy, and a bit rustic, but serviceable. Nice and quiet. The wifi from the main house was spotty but doable. EJ was a fantastic host.
Hi Peggy and Mike, You were absolutely phenomenal guests and I appreciate your kind words. Thanks also for your helpful feedback. I wish I had known that the wifi was spotty while you were here. I could have adjusted that by moving the router and would have been very happy to do so. Hope you are enjoying Los Angeles and do hope to see you back in the Bay Area. Best, EJ
I travel often to SF and wanted to try the East Bay for a recent visit. EJ's truly charming guest home is tucked behind a larger one on the top of a hill. It's perfectly sized for the business or casual traveler (or two) and equipped for basic rehearing and simple cooking if you are crazy enough to skip the restos in this great American food city. EJ was more than accommodating and even brought in a heater when I inquired if he had one (the regular heating systen was under repair but SF doesn't usually require it.) I also appreciated the closet to hang garments, which tends to be a rarity among AIrbnb places and I will fix that in my own listing. Overall a great home away from home in a lovely neighborhood very close to the lake, which another pleasant surprise.
EJ's studio apartment was a great and cozy place. The space was very clean, safe, comfortable, and in an excellent location. It had everything we could need. The stove, microwave, and toaster worked well, the bed was very comfortable, and the water pressure was very good. It is walking distance to great restaurants, coffee shops, and bars. The studio is more in the back of the property which offers a lot of privacy and really gives you the feeling of your own space EJ is a stellar host. He was very attentive and helpful during the stay. He had great recommendations for where to eat, what to do, and was very helpful with any questions we had during the time in the studio. i will most definitely stay with EJ again, hopefully sooner rather than later.
