This is a completely private and detached cottage, sharing the grounds with a 100 year old historic landmark (of "Major Importance" in Oakland's registry). This studio is filled with lots of art and everything a single or couple could need. Queen bed, stove, oven, microwave, toaster, complete bathroom (shower but no bathtub).
Abundant parking curbside at the house is always available.
This is the safest and most walkable area of all Oakland (right on the border of Piedmont), and also has very easy access to buses and Bart to SF, Berkeley, and the entire Bay Area.
5 minute walk (see Guidebook) to Trader Joes, Walgreens, several women's boutiques ranging from upscale to consignment, two toy stores and many great restaurants. If you're feeling like something fast, there's Chipotle, Noahs Bagels, two ice cream / frozen yogurt places, and four pizza places in walking distance (from NY-style by the slice, to Chicago deep-dish, to uber-Gourmet). For coffee, we have both Starbucks and Peets.
5 minute walk to several beautiful parks, playgrounds, gyms and public tennis courts (see Guidebook).
A little further walk to Grand brings you to another dozen shops and restaurants, including the very popular and hip Boot & Shoe, where celebrities are often seen (but not bothered - people tend to be understated around here).
The striking and historic Grand Lake movie theater, with the latest films in 3D and otherwise, is also just a 5 minute walk.
It's two miles - either a pleasant lakeside walk or a 5 minute drive - to some of the best nightlife in the Bay Area, including the Fox and Paramount Theaters, with many of the hottest bands and speakers (ranging from Condoleeza Rice to Paul Krugman) anywhere.
Tons of public transit. Several buses pick up and drop off on our block.
As shown in photos, there are more than a dozen steps up to the property. To me and all the guests so far, walking them feels Great. However, a few elderly people have inquired about the space and I've thought it a bad idea. Please consider if steps are a problem for you.
Interaction with Guests
I love to help people enjoy this property and the great neighborhood, so please ask any questions. Please also see the guidebook, here on airbnb, with lots of fun shops, restaurants, nightlife, parks, etc. I enjoy socializing when possible, depending on available time and similar interests.
Other Things to Note
As stated, guests have access to wifi. Please note that only the internet provider (Comcast in this case) can ensure that wifi will be up all the time. If it goes down, I will seek to remedy the issue immediately, which may require Comcast's assistance. How quickly they resolve the problem can vary but could be several days. If wifi is not operating well in your unit (download speeds less that 5 mbps), I will refund $5 per day. If wifi speed and access is imperative to you, I will consider arranging for your own modem installation in your unit before your stay. To do this, I will pass through whatever costs and add $50 fee for my time. Unfortunately, dealing with Comcast can take a whole day, so this $50 is really a great deal. Pardon the long discussion. I provide it only to avoid misunderstandings and ensure satisfied guests. :)
Smoking is not allowed indoors or outdoors on the property.
Pets require a fee as follows: Cats or small dogs (up to 15 lbs) = $20 a day up to $200 max per pet. Larger dogs are $30 per day up to $300 max per pet. Minimum fee for EACH pet, large or small, is $100.
No dogs who bark other than in extreme and rare circumstances.
All fur and odors must be cleaned before departure.
Pets also require a $500 security deposit.
IMPORTANT: as of this writing, Airbnb does not automatically add pet fees. Please advise of any pets you intend to bring so that such fees may be added.
- Please make sure there is at least one set of clean sheets. When you check in, there will be a clean set on the bed and a second clean set.
- Please leave no more than 1 small container of each type of garbage (compost, recycling, and just plain garbage). Please empty any more than that yourself.
- Clean any dirty dishes. None should be in the sink or dishwasher. It is ok for them to be in the drying rack.
- Leave key(s) visible on a countertop.
- Lock the door.
Amazing area, E.J. is very attentive host, home is very nice with an artistic vibe. All was great! Totally recommend.
I had a lovely stay at the cottage! EJ had everything ready for me by the time I came in which was great after a grueling day of traveling. The accommodations are simple, but had all the essentials I needed for the month. There is a ton of privacy since it is its own living area separate from the house. The location was wonderful! I was able to utilize the bus system to commute the entire month and having Trader Joe's and CVS/Walgreens just a short walk away was so convenient. It was also very close to Lake Merritt and a local park, both of which are good for morning runs. EJ was helpful with any questions or concerns I had, and his recommendations and guidebook were a good jumping off point for exploring the area. Overall, I would definitely recommend staying here!
Couldn't be more pleased with my stay at E.J.'s cottage. E.J. was a tremendous host who was incredibly responsive to all my questions and concerns. It clearly shows how much he wants his guests to have the best experience possible. Can't recommend him and his property highly enough!
E.J was a great host and very friendly! The cottage was nice and clean when I arrived. The neighborhood is beautiful and is only a short walk from great restaurants and Lake Merritt. There is a lovely farmer's market every Saturday, which E.J. introduced me to. I stayed there for a month and it was a very comfortable stay. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for a great place in Piedmont/Oakland.
E.J.'s place was exactly as described. Nice space in a great, safe neighborhood. Perfect for a couple days in the East Bay.
EJ's cottage was just as charming and lovely as described! The location is excellent, and within walking distance to many local restaurants and shops. There is also a bus stop right by the house that goes directly to downtown Oakland and Emeryville. EJ was a wonderful and attentive host, responding immediately to any questions that we had during our stay. He went above and beyond to make us feel at home, and I would absolutely recommend his place to anyone looking for a great location in the Oakland/Piedmont area!
We had a wonderful stay at E.J.'s cottage. E.J. was very kind and checked-in on us to make sure things were going okay during our visit. The location was perfect and the cottage was cozy. We definitely plan to stay at E.J.'s place when we next return to the Bay area.

I grew up in Orinda, a little suburb 30 minutes from San Francisco. I've spent most of my life between the Bay Area, Santa Monica (a beach city in L.A. County) and New York City. I surf, ski, snowboard, play basketball, tennis and soccer and a lot of other sports. I like art and the house is quite filled with it, though not from anyone famous... yet :). I also enjoy board games and socializing in general. I've traveled a lot, from 10 in a room hostels to luxury, and understand what makes a nice place to stay. I'll do everything possible to help you enjoy your time here, and welcome your requests.
