Awesome Couch in Washington Heights

Apartment - Shared room · West 182nd Street, New York, NY 10033, United States

I'm renting out my foldout couch for visitors to rest. The apartment is small, but its a great place to crash after a long day in the city. Conveniently located in the heart of Washington Heights right near the 1 & A train, only 30min to Midtown.

The Space

Located on the first floor of the building, it is an adorable little apartment with lots of sunlight that spills in through the windows.

The couch is the SOLSTA sofa bed from Ikea. It folds out to create a full length sized bed.

Guest Access

Access to the bathroom and kitchen.

Interaction with Guests

Once you check in, I try to stay out of your way as much as possible.

The Neighborhood

The apartment is located right next to a department store and there are two grocery stores right around the corner along with a Laundromat, so everything you need is within reach. There are also a ton of great restaurants located in the neighborhood and, my personal favorite, a Little Caesar’s right up the block.

Getting around

The 1 train is literally a few steps away from the apartment making commuting a breeze. Also, a few blocks away the A train has a stop.

Other Things to Note

I do allow more than one guest to stay if you are traveling with a friend or a significant other. I charge $15 dollars for every extra person.

  • Joey was a great host. He was very clear in communications, contactful without being intrusive, and generous with his space. His couch is great value as a place to crash in Manhattan.

  • Ce séjour chez Joey s'est très bien déroulé : Joey est discret, gentil et disponible (mail et téléphone) quand il le faut!
Très bon rapport qualité/prix pour New York.
Quartier assez sympa, multiculturel (on y entend beaucoup d'espagnol).

  • Hi you all!!!

Well my experience on Joe's house was pretty cool!! It was my first time in New York and the USA, so Joey helped me with lot's of stuff related to that, like subway, adresses, etc. His place was really nice and comfortable, he also made me fell like I was at home :D
Again thank you so much Joey for everything. I am glad you liked MATE and I will you send more soon :D a big hug, the first argentinian there!!!

  • Ok, where to begin... I think I should begin with the Pros, You can stay in Manhattan, for a very good price per night. Less than a block to the "1" train, and around 4 to the "A" (express) that means you can be in in around 30 minutes subway to midtown. The neighborhood is perfectly fine, very active during the day and you can find places to buy food/groceries open at nighttime. Joey is a very nice guy, I hardly exchanged words with him, but he is pleasant and tries within his knowledge to make you comfortable at his home. Ok now let's go with the Cons: The couch is not a sofa bed, if you want to know how it works you can check on Ikea, is basically like sleeping on a thick mat, against the floor, is this comfortable? definitely not, can you live with it? definitely yes, I slept for 10 nights and I can't really say that I suffered it, and if we go to back the price, you can not complaint. The biggest problem is that you sleep on the floor, not on a clean rug, did I like it? no, but I was able to leave with it. Another issue was the inside of the couch, once you open it it was dirty with stuff, can't say what was it but definitely needed a vacuum. The other issue was the linen, when I contacted Joey he mentioned not to brin towels and linen/pillows since he will provide me with them. When I arrived he pointed at a cubed that had everything in it, when I took the things from inside everything was mixed together, if you asks me if it was clean, I can't really tell, but at the least it should be folded to have the minimum of the appearance of freshness. The weird thing was since nothing was folded the pillow cover was on the pillow which strikes me as if he didn't fold the linen I don't know why he put the pillow cover on the pillow, that I'm almost sure was not clean, but can't say for sure. Let's go tot he towel, he mentioned that I had a towel for me in the bath and there where two towels, no way to now the following morning and I needed to use is which one was mine, finally I made a decision that was the wrong one I realized the following day when the one I used was placed in a different way. On regards to how clean the room was, it was not, dust covered all over the furniture, the kitchen was awful with fridge with a terrible smell of rotten milk. On regards to the bathroom, it was bad as bad as it can be the that was there for a long long time, like in the shower or underneath the toilet bowl. Thank god that changed since the hired a cleaning lady 1 day before I...

    Response from Joey:

    Hi Gus,

I'm sorry your stay wasn't 100% to your liking. I wish you would have expressed some of these concerns to me while you were here, that way I could have made your stay more comfortable. I can guarantee that the linens were clean as well as the rest of the apartment. As you witnessed I have hired a cleaning lady to come and clean it.

That said, its no million dollar hotel. I run my listing while working a full time job, so I am sorry it wasn't a 5-star experience but I think for what I charge I took very good care of you and went above and beyond what a hotel or hostel would do with guests. I lay this clearly out in the listing that it is a couch in an apartment.

So, I am sorry you were misinformed about what I offered and that your expectations were not met. I hope to take the good feedback you gave me and apply it to future guests who come and stay. Thanks.

  • Joey was useful
    It was correct

  • Joey was a great host even if we just saw each other like two or three times.
This room gives you everything you need for your stay in NYC, not more, not less.
Great neighbourhood, only a 1 minute walk to the sub. About 30-40 minutes by sub until you reach Midtown.
Can't really complain about anything. Maybe sometimes it was a little bit loud but in case of that, just earplugs ;)

  • For a safe, relatively clean, and warm place to sleep, this is one of the best, short term, flexible deals I found to live in NYC.

Joey was a kind and helpful host; open to requests and considerate. I checked in at a later time and he was able to work something out with me.

The couch does not have a pull out frame, the cushions unfold out. You are close to the kitchen - a little tough if you're a light sleeper. There is space in the fridge to put groceries and such, but no microwave.

The location is great for those needing to take trains downtown or buses to Jersey; as well as for getting groceries, UPS, USPS, laundromat. There are a coupla restaurants and food vendors to check out.

  • You'll want to read this twice... I stayed in Manhattan, over the entire Super Bowl weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) for less than $100!!! You can't stay in Manhattan on a "normal" weekend for that price!

Staying at Joey's place was perfect for me (and anyone else traveling solo just looking for a place to lay your head and keep your luggage). I saw Joey twice throughout my entire stay (which was just fine, felt like I had the place to myself). It really is just as he described, a nice warm place with a pull-out couch to lay your head at night and be able to enjoy the city on the cheap.

    I recommend it!
