The Neighborhood

Amstelveen is a quaint and a very near suburb of Amsterdam, in fact it is its south-west tentacle. Couple of years ago Amstelveen has been voted to be the best place to live in the Netherlands.
Many Amsterdammers move to Amstelveen when they get children, to enjoy calm, lush surroundings with excellent cultural and shopping facilities without losing the connection with the vibrant and possibly the most exciting city in the world. The trip to Amsterdam Museum District by bus takes only 20min!
The unique geographical position of Amstelveen close to Amsterdam and Schiphol made it also very attractive to the international business, with numbers of expats growing explosively over the last years and English widely spoken. The bus 300 will take you to Schiphol in 15 min.
Amstelveen has a very nice quaint Old Center with a Micheline star restaurant at the lake and Jan van der Togt high end art gallery, and the New Center - Stadshart - with quite upscale shopping and the Cobra museum of modern art, really recommended. Both are at 15 min walk from the house.
The house is virtually surrounded by excellent parks, including the famous Amsterdamse Bos (the forest of Amsterdam). It is ideal for walking, jogging, canoing, renting a boat/water bike and taking kids out. The goat farm with kids attractions, home made ice cream and cheese is especially popular.
For the daily needs you have two very good supermarkets (AH & Lidl) very near to the house (4 min walk).
Please see my guide for the map.

Getting around

From AMSTERDAM CENTRAL STATION in 40 min by buses 170 and 172 till bus stop "Kruiskerk", Amstelveen.
From Airport Schiphol by Bus 300, takes 15 min and rides very often. Get out at "Amstelveen Busstation" (Stadshart, the New Center) and walk 15 min. Taxi from the airport costs around 30 euro.
A pleasant 8 minute walk will take to you to the bus stop "Kruiskerk". The buses 170 & 172 (average interval 5-10min) would take you in 20 minute to the Museum District, 25 min to the Leidseplein and in 40 minute to the Central Station. The bus ride is an excursion by itself, since it goes through the luxury Old-South, the vibrant Liedseplein and the medieval center.
Walk to the New Center - Stadshart (15min), take bus 300 till Schiphol Plaza (15min).
at the door, free.

Other Things to Note

Are you interested in one of these:
-exploring Europe from Amstelveen?
-single stay with breakfast?
-getting around with kids?
then read the info below.
EXPLORING EUROPE from Amstelveen:
The uniquie position of Amstelveen close to SCHIPHOL which is both an airport and a train station with extensive connections, makes it ideal basis for exploring Europe.
It is possible to make one-day inexpensive and exiting trips to London and Berlin (Easy jet), Paris and Brussels (High speed Thalys from Schiphol) ...and come back in the evening to relax in the garden...
I have the first hand experience in such trips, so do not hesitate to ask.
Are you single on business trip to Amstelveen/ Schiphol/ Amsterdam? Then we have a small spare guest room for you, and all the facilities of the house will be available, including free breakfast.
Here is where you could go:
- Kids playground in the Broersepark, with small pool in the summer (5 min walk);
- Attractions in the Amsterdamse Bos - goat farm, swimming area (summer), canoeing and water biking, manège etc (20-30 min walk in the park)
- Stadshart Schouwburg, (New Center) - films, theater and different activities during school holidays (15 min walk);
- Swimming pool Meerkamp (15 min, bus), in the summer also open swimming area;
- Museum Tram (the old quaint tram carriages collected from the whole Europe), riding between the old Amsterdam tram station - the Haarlemmermeer Station in Amsterdam Oud Zuid and the Bovenkerk - south end of Amstelveen. Great way to go to Amsterdam! The tram stop is just opposite the house (crossing of railway and Molenweg), rides mostly weekends only (3 min walk).
The puppet theater - a very good one, buy tickets in time (5 min walk).
Chimpy-Champ - the huge barn with kids activities, and glowgolf - to exhaust your kids (15 min by car).
In AMSTERDAM (some of):
NEMO - technology museum for kids, great fun, 10 min walk from the Central Station;
The Maritime Museum with the full scale replica of 1749 Dutch ship, for children to explore (near by NEMO);
ARTIS - the ZOO with planetarium and big playground (40 min bus + tram);
Vondel Park - the best park in Amsterdam, with different kids facilities (20 min by bus);
A Canal Cruise (30 min by bus to Leidseplein).
In ZANDVOORT aan Zee - the see and the dunes, use bus 175 to Haarlem railway station and take a train, total travel time around 1h.

  • We have stayed in this lovely place for ten days. Four (!) rooms with sleeping places, one has double bed, three (!) toilets - one on each floor, fully equipped kitchen, very nice small backyard garden, beautiful countryside nature around - and all that some 15 minutes by bus to the very center of Amsterdam. Bellissimo! Julia, thank you very much, hope to be at your place again and again.

Hi! I am Julia and i decided to join airbnb because i like traveling myself. So when i have time to travel, mostly during the school holidays, my house stays empty, which is a shame. Amstelveen is so lovely and so close to Amsterdam! I think it is the best place for a longer stay, especially when you travel with the kids. We have some great parks around. And if one is really greedy and wants to see it all, one day trips to London, Paris or Berlin are an easy option (verified), since Schiphol is only 15 min away. On the other side - why bother? The little garden is perfect for BBQ and chilling out, the house is full of books and design magazines and the media do the rest. So you can play it by ear, which is i think the best way to travel. Isn't it?
