The Retreat Villas Surya and Chandra together share a huge 2000 square meter piece of paradise with a 20M and 13M swimming pool, large gathering rooms, staff house and two fully staffed and equipped kitchens - one alfresco and the other in the main Villa Surya building and last but not least a large Organic kitchen garden supplying many of the daily fresh vegetables and herbs for our guests.
Included in your price is greeting drink, complimentary coffee and tea in the rooms, full breakfast of your choice for all your party, free pickup and deliver to and from the airport in Denpasar or your next destination here on the island and all the Balinese peace and tranquility you may need.
The Retreat is ideal for large families or groups wishing to experience the beauty and serenity of Bali without the impersonal stress and hectic of hotel living. Our English speaking staff have many years of looking after Western guests and have retained that gentle Balinese character that makes visiting the island such a tranquil and enjoyable experience.
There is so much to do in and around The Retreat that we have had to produce several brochures for Activities - ranging from massages (reflexology to full-body) to day fishing trips with the local fishermen and many, many things in between. A second brochure covers the Balinese Tours and drivers that we have accredited to work with our guests and a description of the range of Island tours with pricing. Both of these brochures are unfortunately only available after you have booked and your email address is made accessible to us through Airbnb.
Should your group be smaller it is also possible to book each villa individually. For further info on the single villas go to:

We stayed at Villa Surya and had a great time. The villa is gorgeous and the staff are all lovely and will try very hard to make sure you have a great stay and that you have everything you need. We loved the beautiful pool and the rice paddy / coconut grove setting which was very peaceful. Its really an ideal setting.
One of the highlights for me was meeting Tita, one of the pets at Villa Surya, an adopted civet kitten, which I loved! This was an added bonus!
We did several trips around the island with a driver which were easily arranged, and often came back in the evening to home cooked food from Ketut, your personal cook at the villa.
Unfortunately for us the weather was not always so good when we stayed and this made the internet connection difficult, but this is a great place to come and relax and forget about the outside world.
Thanks to Mark and Petra and all the staff for a lovely stay.
This was a magical place for our vacation break. We four women had a wonderful, restful, fun time with a beautiful place to stay. Mark and Petra couldn't have been more lovely hosts. Mark gave us great information and Petra filled in many cultural questions about Bali. The staff was always smiling and gracious. Ketut, our chef, made us delicious meals and we had cocktails overlooking the ocean and rice fields. Our masseuse came to the house and gave great service leaving us invigorated for our trips with the world's best driver. The rooms were clean, comfortable and charming. We all loved the bathrooms and beds and slept lulled to sleep by the sounds of the ocean and awakened with the sounds of nature. Night swimming in the pool with stars and giant fireflies was nothing less than heaven. If you need a break and total relaxation, this would be the place.
Mark, the host was very helpful and attentive, as well as all the staff. We rented a car which was a good means to explore Bali.
For those who want to visit Karangasem, white beach is a must! and Candi Dasa is just a stroll away by car to enjoy great dining and shopping. Thank you Mark for the lovely stay!
It was lovely to have had you all to stay as one of the first guests at our newly completed Villa Chandra and I'm also very, very pleased that you agreed that the level of luxury is up to the high standard set at our neighbouring Villa Surya with the staff, food and comfort. We hope to see you Martin and your lovely daughters again when China again gets too stressful and you need a good break and a restorative massage. Om Swastiastu Alit, Made, Ketut, Kadek, Ilu, Petra and Mark
We stayed at Villa Surya for 5 nights. As many have said the pictures dont do it justice, it really is a beautiful place to stay.
We had a great experience staying there. It was made more special by the people who looked after us there, Ketut, Made, Alit and Kardek, and of course Made our driver. We had wonderful food, probably the best we had in Bali. Our kids who are 15 and 17 loved hanging out with the all the animals, and the lovely Balinese who looked after us.
Mark and Petra made everything really easy and had lots of great tips of things to do. Nothing was too much trouble so we were really lucky to have someone so dedicated to our holiday being great!
It is very peaceful there, and that is what we liked. It felt like we were able to walk around the padi fields, village etc and experience some of the real Bali. It is a very different experience from the beaches of the South.
We loved the white Sandy beach tho very close by. A great experience was a bike ride we did with East Bali bike tours, and the serenity of Bali on the coast between Amed and Jasri. Also dont miss the swing at Charleys! And if you love Tai Chi you never know what you might find there! Last of all Bali Asli has an amazing view worth going for just that!
Thank you Mark and Petra!!
tl;dr: great place, would stay again.
a few details:
the house and property are beautiful and very well maintained, everything is nicer than it looks in the pictures. friendly staff with daily cleaning, and they can prepare meals at additional cost. Mark, who lives next door and manages the property, was super cool and helpful. he even drove us to town to by beers.
the ocean is a short trot down the road, but other than that the location is some-what remote - which is great, but you'll probably want a car or bike to get to anything else.
the near beaches are rocky and the surf is strong. i swam in it daily, but it's kinda rough. beautiful, but don't expect to head down there to stretch out a towel or let the kids play in the sea. i heard their was a "white sand" beach nearby that you could take a vehicle to, but we didn't check it out. there's also a surf spot maybe 1 km down the coast that was a lot of fun.
internet is via a mobile network modem, which performed better than the 3G cards we got for our phones, but not by much, and the connection came and went as it pleased. not unexpected or unreasonable given the location, but just a heads up. storms rolled through many evenings, and we only lost power briefly one night.
there are lizards and frogs and bugs and all that shit everywhere. it's the tropics... if you can't deal with 'em, maybe try an upscale resort or something. mosquitos were not bad at all in my opinion, and all the beds have nice nets over them to boot. there's also a huge catfish-like thing in the little pond wrapping the pool. i called him General Sherman and fed him bugs. i think we got along well.
awesome spot, would stay again.
If Neil and Daniel got any more California "laid back" they'd fall right over. It was great to have them and their unique perspective on all things Bali. The catfish will now officially be called forever-more General Sherman - problem is not sure which one to honour with this as there are about 5 in the surrounding ponds. I will crack the history books of the U.S. Civil war for some more fitting names.
As to the suitability of the local beach for sunbathing and swimming I would only add that it changes seasonally and as Neil was here at the end of the rough weather season we would expect it to mellow out quite a lot for the rest of the year. This also has a huge effect on the presence of that wonderfully fine black pumice sand which is just perfect for stretching out a towel on.
Our two staff cats Cheech and Chong are doing their level best to keep the bug, gecko and lizard population down so I guess we may have to get in some backup to help out.
Great to have you both and we look forward to hearing about your further successes in the news and Dow Jones reports.
mark's villa is in fact paradise in bali! mark and petra are so nice, friendly and thoughtful. we were greeted with fresh drinks when we got to the villa at 130am! beautiful property... we enjoy swimming every morning under the coconut trees, listening to the waves into sleep, having really good coffee and yummy made to order breakfast by the pool side by ketut... our driver made is so super nice as well... driving us around all day for 15 hours with no complaints. the property location is quite secluded, right by the beach, overlooking rice patties... it is perfect for staying away from the crazy tourism area down south... very peaceful and relaxing. would highly recommend it to anyone!
Our stay at Mark and Petra’s beautiful Villa was just great.
The villa is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Bali with views on the Ocean, magnificent rice fields and the Agung Volcano. Difficult to do better than that. Far away from the bustling touristic South, you will discover the real Bali there.
Mark, Petra and all the staff are lovely people and they will make sure you enjoy your holidays the way you like.
The pictures of the villa do not emphasis enough on the very large garden surrounding the villa, populated with friendly cats, dogs and chicken. My 2 ½ years old daughter enjoyed it so much.
I would definitely recommend Mark and Petra’s villa to everyone, especially if you have kids and want to stay far away from Kuta and Seminyak and see what Bali is really about.
Our stay in the villa was an extraordinary and memorable experience:
- The villa was our most beautiful accommodation in Bali: it is large, with enough space for our whole family (2 adults and 3 kids). the interior of the room is tasteful. The view to the rice fields was outstanding. In the afternoon we enjoyed the swimmungpools.
- Mark and his wife were helpful, what places to visit. They, as well as their employees were very friendly.
- The locationof the villa is perfect to explore the eastern part of Bali.
We highly recommend the villa.
Many thanks for your kind and generous review. It was a pleasure to have you all stay with us and see how much a well organized family/group can actually see and do here on Bali if it's well planned. You guys managed to get to most of the things worth seeing and doing with the relief of an evening visit from our resident masseur Ketut to bolster you all for the next days activities. Hope you come again soon and that Vienna isn't too cold after the sun, sea and surf from White Sandy Beach (Pasir Pute). Mark, Petra, Ketut, Kadek, Made, Alit and the circus.
I am not sure where to begin. This place was really amazing!
We were greeted at the airport by the villa driver (Made) and he was very easy to find. He was very friendly and brought us bottled water and cold washclothes to help us cool down. We then had the 2 hour or so drive to the villa which wasn't bad at all. My friends fell asleep but I was busy looking around at everything we passed.
When we arrived to the villa the entires staff greeted us and we were given fresh juice and a quick tour. Then we had our first meal and it was delicious! We were all hungry after our 7 hour flight so having a homecooked meal waiting for us was great!
The next morning we woke and saw how beautiful the surrounding of the villa were. They were great. It is a little secluded but a short 10 minute walk to the beach where all of the local Balinese farmers greet you. The small beach was also very quiet and we had it all to ourselves!
The villa grounds themselves were perfect. The landscaping was done with great care to give the guests the most privacy. The pool was an perfect size for my two friends and I and the water felt great after a day of touring or shopping. The rooms of the villa were cleaned daily and the staff made our beds, provided us with fresh towels, cleaned the pool, and took care of pretty much all of our needs and wants daily. Everyone was great!
Made, the driver, was always available to us and had competitive rates the rest of the local drivers. He was able to take us all over the island and recommended several restaurants that had amazing views. There was one day we did A LOT of activities in several different places and he ended up driving us for almost 14 hours with no complaints.
I would say we ate about 60-65% of our meals at the villa and everything tasted great! Someone from the staff would check the local market for fresh fish each day and then ask us if we wanted to have it. We would then tell them what time we wanted our meals and they would be ready. Everything was prepared with the utmost care to ensure it wasn't too spicy (for me) while my friends could put on as much of the chilli seasoning as they wanted. None of us had any complaints about the food.
Finally, Mark and Petra were so friendly! The first morning of our arrival they told us about the villa and recommended some good tourist sites around the island. They were always near if we had any questions or concerns. Mark answered all of my questions prior to my arrival with the perfect amount of detail and in excellent time so we were never confused about anything.
We would definitely stay here again! Highly recommended!
