Interaction with Guests
I live downstairs with my two Bali cats , one sociable and responsive to visitors and one timid and hardly seen when other people are here.
Airport pickup and drop off can be arranged and I have contacts with massage and beauty therapists and a renowned Balinese healer/shaman and can help you arrange shopping or sightseeing with my local drivers.
This is an idyllic corner of paradise for serious rest and relaxation and a wonderful base to explore the island.
I had a nice time at Ruth's accomodation. It is very comfortable, quiet and I had everything I needed (Yoga, massage, restaurants and a supermarket) in this enviroment.
Ruth is very friendly & helpful. I like her cats too - unique was pussy (the mother cat) she was very lovely and helpful for me.
Every morning this beautiful views over the rice fields, is like meditation.
I can recommend this place to women who want to travel alone.
Although one night was cut short due to take-off weather in the US, Ruth was extremely accommodating in her beautiful home. Everything was amazing from the view and peacefulness right down to the banana pancakes in the morning. She even arranged a car (Nick) to pick us up from the airport. It might have been a tad higher than negotiating your own price at the airport (not by much), but it's definitely worth it due to the fact the house is located in back alley's instead of right off the main road. Nick knew exactly where to lead us and it was a godsend for the first night.
The location is just outside of the center of Ubud and a small walk (3 mins) to the closest taxi stand for those not wanting to make the 20 min walk into town. The supermarket is 3 mins by foot away, and the ridge walk - just below 15 mins. There is also a few warung's, yoga, and massage studios within a few mins as well.
We had such an amazing time staying with Ruth (and her 3 cats) and we will surely stay with her the next time we find ourselves in Ubud!
I stayed with Ruth for about a month. I decided to use her driver which made it much easier for me and he even brought my luggage to my room (2nd floor)! The room is exactly as pictured with a spacious balcony area that is great for breakfast and lounging on the daybed to read. Bathroom is spacious as well. There is a great breeze through the room which is great. Ruth herself was extremely helpful. She gave me tips for where to go, restaurants, and directions in the Ubud/Penestanan area. She helped to arrange a place to stay when I left her and she helped me extend my visa as well. In general, it was an amazing trip and definitely made my first trip to Bali unforgettable. Thanks Ruth!
Above the Palms was everything we hoped it would be. Comfortable, relaxing and quiet. Lovely room, balcony and plunge pool. Good bathroom and shower!
Ruth is a wonderful host. She made us feel really welcome and took the time to share recommendations and stories about living in Ubud. She was particularly great when I needed to go to a doctor after a small bike accident and rang the clinic for me without hesitation, which I really appreciated.
The location on one of the small pedestrian paths in Penestanan is exceptional - the charming Yellow Flower organic cafe and Intuitive Flow yoga school further along the same path. Easy access on foot to everything around Penestanan and a 10 min walk to Ubud centre.
We really enjoyed our stay at Above the Palms and would gladly return. Wish we could have stayed longer.
We had a relaxing few days staying with Ruth in Ubud. Ruth's place is excellently located with a few great cafes within close proximity. The place is set within the rainforest, so be prepared for all aspects of nature, including a wildlife wake up call.
Ruth, herself, is a helpful and caring host, she looked after us very well and attended to all our needs, including recommending places to eat and activities. Breakfast was great on the balcony as well.

About the Host, Ruth
I’m a permanent resident originally from Australia (actually born in England but lived most of my life in Aus) with a love of Bali, its people and its culture. I love good food and In Sydney some years ago I had a cafe.
I enjoy having guests in my home and helping them get the most out of their stay, but I also respect people's privacy.
I’m into yoga and meditation and being healthy (as much as I can with such a love of food) . I’m passionate about colour and design, love travel, love sharing the things I know about and work towards balance in my life.
Here I am fascinated by the culture - continually learning more about the ceremonies, special occasions, and temple decorations. I love the gentleness of the Balinese people and how they are always smiling and willing to talk and help people. I am also grateful for the peace and tranquility living here offers - it really is a magical place.
