The Space

Penestanan is set up on a ridge 20 minutes walk from the bustle of Ubud township and has long been known as the artists village. The main road to Ubud is 300 metres away, via a pathway and steps - 20 minutes walk to Ubud or 4 minutes in a taxi from the bottom of the steps.

We are on a quiet walking path surrounded by ricefields and local and expat community life.. Nearby is an organic cafe, local warungs (casual eateries), western restaurants, art galleries, a yoga studio and local supermarket.

It is a SAFE area for women travelling alone.

If you are a person travelling alone, please let me know and I will arrange a special rate.

The house itself is set in a lush private tropical garden with a pool and large outdoor living space. There are pool towels available for when you use the pool.

Guest accommodation is a large upstairs bedroom with a 4 poster queen size bed with mosquito net and an ensuite bathroom where even the shower overlooks the palm trees. There are tea/coffee making facilities in the room and drinking water is complimentary.

Guest Access

Your room opens onto a large private balcony with table and chairs and a daybed for you to laze away the hours, meditate or catch up on your emails. We serve breakfast on this balcony.

Interaction with Guests

I live downstairs with my two Bali cats , one sociable and responsive to visitors and one timid and hardly seen when other people are here.

Airport pickup and drop off can be arranged and I have contacts with massage and beauty therapists and a renowned Balinese healer/shaman and can help you arrange shopping or sightseeing with my local drivers.

This is an idyllic corner of paradise for serious rest and relaxation and a wonderful base to explore the island.

  • I stayed with Ruth for 2 weeks whilst on a yoga teacher training and she was a wonderful host arranging pick up from the airport and was available for any queries I might have. Her place has loads of charm with a beautiful garden, neat and tidy room with character and a lovely balcony. Local eateries nearby are great and there is a supermarket very close (bin tang). Penestanan is a pretty area with rice fields and frogs about 30 mins walk from central ubud. I highly recommend.

  • My mother and I had a great time at Ruth's house. The village was calm and charm, and hospitality is the best experience.

I really had enjoyed talking with Ruth and thank you for everything.

  • Beautiful room and peaceful environment. In 20 minutes walking you will be in Ubud centre, but you can find some very good restaurants/cafe's in the lovely area Penestanan (5 min. walk). I stayed with Ruth for 5 days during my trip. I traveled alone and my goal was to have some time to think, read, relax, do some yoga, and enjoy the peace in these 5 days. Ruth is a wonderful lady: she took me to a big local ceremony and she was very helpful in telling me all about Bali and Ubud. Also, the breakfast was lovely.
(A plus for me was also a big local supermarket within walking distance.)

Negatives: in the morning you can enjoy the sun at the pool. The rest of the day this area is in the shade. This makes the pool a bit to cold for my preference.
Also, I would maybe not take this room with my boyfriend, because of the openness of the room. You can hear the slightest noise.

Conclusion: I would recommend Ruth's Above The Palm Trees to solo or befriended travelers who enjoy serenity, walking, culture of Ubud and good food. I had the time of my life :)

  • I had a great stay with Ruth. She is super kind and hospitable. Even made me something to eat when I arrived à bit sick after the taxi trip from Balangan. Ruths place is lovely, à true Balinese experience. Especially the winding narrow walk over the pathway from Bintang Supermarket. Great breakfasts and Ruth even accomodated towards my wheat allergy. The cons for me though where that its not airconditioned and quite noisy (you can sometimes hear your neighbours) às the walls are "bamboo thin" :-) And you will be woken up by the neighbourhoud rooster at 5.30 (so bring earplugs haha) Would definitely recommend this place for single travellers but if youre à couple I would want à place thats à bit more private.

  • I'm quite a heavy user of Airbnb, but I can definitely say that this is one of my best experience of Airbnb ever! Ruth is truly amazing host, she is warm, kind, and smart, and very thoughtful. She has lots of knowledge about Ubud and her neighbourhood, and willing to share to her guest her valuable knowledge, she even gave me a map she made by herself. Her house very beautiful, clean, and comfortable. You can have entire second floor including your own balcony, and bathroom. Ruth provide handmade yummy breakfast every morning to balcony. As you own our own 2nd floor you can have your own privacy also you can also freely access to 1st floor living room and pool area. I really like neighbourhood, very nice yoga studio is just 2~3mins from the house, and beautiful cafe is just around the corner. (1~2mins). There are lots of hidden places (Cafes, Organic restaurants, Bali Restaurants,Massage Shop) just few minutes walk from her house, and it's all very high quality. You can walk to the Ubud's busy main street by walk (Around 15~20mins) but I much more prefer to stay this small village as it's so much charming and people is so kind. (Everyone here is smiling!) I have only great memories here in Ubud and Ruth's house, and will definitely come back here for my next trip. (I'm already planning!!) Thanks so much Ruth!!

  • I stayed with Ruth for a week and had a great relaxing time at her place. The room is just like described and shown in the pictures. Ruth is a warm hearted person and she will make you feel like home with great map and tip guiding. I really enjoyed my stay in penestanan and would definitevly recommend this place. Its like staying in your favourite aunt's place in a fairytale. Terima kasih Ruth!

  • I cannot recommend “Above the Palms” highly enough…. I had the entire upper floor to myself, which provided the private and quiet space I needed for my writing. There were attractive wood finishes, and leafy vistas from every window (including from the modern toilet and bathroom!). The balcony was spectacular - ideal as a comfortable work space and also for some tranquil star gazing at night. The excellent breakfast (banana pancake), along with tea and coffee making facilities in my room, meant I barely had to set foot out of the place. Ruth, was a great host, and a mine of useful local information and contacts.

  • Ruth is a very lovely lady, always insightful and very helpful. Breakfast was nice, place was clean. Good cafes around.Pool area you have to yourself with morning sun which is nice. Nice sound of nature surrounding and a quite area. I would recommend Ruth's cosy place to anyone. Big area all to yourself at the top of the house also.

  • The Campuan area is just North West of Ubud centre. The 50 or so ‘Campuan steps’ lead from the main road (Raya Ubud) up to a network of foot paths and it is by one of these that you find Ruth’s house. You thus have to walk to the house and blissfully, there is no traffic noise. I found it no problem to stroll from the house to Ubud centre, about 20 minutes. Ruth’s house and the grounds are quite compact, perhaps smaller than expected. As a guest, you have the upper floor with attached toilet and shower as well as a nice balcony. You should know, however, that the ground and upper floors are connected with an open staircase, i.e. there is no door for you to close, and the two floors are like one room. Ruth is quiet and discreet but with this slight lack of privacy, one could get the feeling that whatever noises you make can be heard. The Campuan area is quiet and peaceful, although at times the neighbours may play American movies quite loudly. Ruth is a very kind and helpful person and she serves you an excellent breakfast of fruits and eggs. You will find that the Yellow Flower Cafe next door becomes indispensable for coffees, snacks and meals.

    Response from Ruth:

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with me I am always appreciative of guest comments as I endeavour to achieve the very best experience for them while they are here

Regarding your concerns about privacy, I do assure you that the solid wall enclosing the stairs does actually create a very effective sound barrier. Travel safely.

About
I’m a permanent resident originally from Australia (actually born in England but lived most of my life in Aus) with a love of Bali, its people and its culture. I love good food and In Sydney some years ago I had a cafe. I enjoy having guests in my home and helping them get the most out of their stay, but I also respect people's privacy. I’m into yoga and meditation and being healthy (as much as I can with such a love of food) . I’m passionate about colour and design, love travel, love sharing the things I know about and work towards balance in my life. Here I am fascinated by the culture - continually learning more about the ceremonies, special occasions, and temple decorations. I love the gentleness of the Balinese people and how they are always smiling and willing to talk and help people. I am also grateful for the peace and tranquility living here offers - it really is a magical place. .
