Though the hostel and neighborhood were both beautiful and well located in regards to the rest of the city, I wouldn't recommend staying at Casa do Selarón.
I had read good reviews about the hostel and was eager to stay there but upon arrival I was quite disappointed. As I said before the house is beautiful, but the service we received was far from welcoming. There were no other guests when we arrived and despite that, the employees there had no idea we were coming. We were then informed that the computer and wifi router had been stolen by a previous guest a few days earlier and that breakfast would not be served because they didnt have money to buy the food needed. Instead, we were given a refund of 5 reales each per day which is about enough for just a cup of coffee on the street.
In three days there, we never ever met Carlos (who was supposedly coming to bring a new router and food for breakfast but never showed up) and were attented to by 3 kids who were relaxed and friendly but not too interested in helping us out when we asked for directions or recommedations on places to visit (both of which we couldnt find on our own without wifi).
The beds were comfortable enough and the showers were decent, but without any extra commodities we didnt enjoy our stay at Casa do Selaron very much. Rio has a ridiculous amount of hostels available with better amenities for the same price, if I ever go back I'll probably be checking in to one of those...
I deeply regret "staying" at this hostel. After a terrible reception, I left immediately without looking back. Although it's located in an awesome area, I don't recommend anyone to stay there.
Arriving at this hostel was similar to arriving at prison. I was received by a very rude lady, who took several minutes just to let me in. She walked me to one of the dorms, pointed at it and said: "this is what we have". She told me there were no lockers and I would have to leave all my stuff on the floor. She left right away without showing me the hostel amenities or anything. I was so uncomfortable with the situation that I decided to leave immediately and look for somewhere else.
I asked a few questions the day before, but I still didn't get an answer. Since the hostel had such great reviews, I decided to instant book it anyway. My impression is that they were not prepared for this because they had no clue I would arrive.
The hostel is located in a great area, very close to Lapa and Rio downtown. The stairs are just gorgeous. However, there is no indication that the house is a hostel, making it difficult to find and look a little bit clandestine. I can't tell much about the hostel amenities since no one showed me those. However, the small portion of the hostel I was presented to wasn't very clean (although it was being cleaned at the time).
Es un lugar con muy buena onda, el barrio es seguro y esta muy cerca de todo tipo de transporte.
Me trataron muy bien, la descripción del lugar es perfecta y el hostal esta en las escaleras de Selaron, un sitio muy turistico y bohemio!
