My warm, well-appointed flat has a '30's feel to it, with giant banks of sunny windows, hardwood floors, subway tiles in the bathroom, high ceilings, French doors and art deco sconces. Easy parking, welcoming host, animals fine as guests, too!
On a peaceful, tree-lined street, with ample on-street parking and little traffic, our sunny one or two bedroom flat on the 2nd floor in the Westville neighborhood has designer wool rugs, hardwood floors, high ceilings and 9-foot banks of windows with southern exposure overlooking a courtyard. The dining room has French doors and vintage deco sconces (and it doubles as the second bedroom thanks to strategically-placed bunk beds in the corner.) The master bedroom is spacious, and has a hand-crafted cherry queen bed with firm organic mattress, Garnet Hill sheets, down comforter and down pillows and sheeps' fleece mattress pad for cool summer and warm winter sleeping. The living room has ultra-comfy down-filled furniture that you just sink right into. The 30's-style subway-tiled bathroom has a nice deep soaking tub and shower, with limitless hot water with great water pressure. The place has plentiful heat in the winter, and in summer each room has its own air conditioner.
Since I no longer use this space for my primary residence, the bureaus and big closets (one in every single room) are also yours to use if you need to settle in for a longer stay.
Please do note that the TV shown in the photos of the living room is no longer there, though I provide high-speed cable modem WIFI. Also, many of my reviews mention my cat and/or dog, but Haiku and Snickers now live with me in my other home.
You are welcome to use the kitchen for for food preparation; it is fully equipped. I also provide a few breakfast items as well as coffee/tea.
You have access to a nice, tidy laundry room in the basement. The machines take quarters and it costs $1.50 for a wash, $1.50 for dry.
I am available as much as needed and I love to meet new people, but am very respectful of privacy and take my cues from my guests. You may text or call me any time during or before your stay with any questions you might have, whether it's about where to find the coffee filters or where to find a great bottle of wine!
I love how quiet and peaceful it is here. It's the best of apartment living without the downsides.
The Westville area -- a distinct, artsy section within New Haven -- is beautiful and safe, dotted with large, well-cared-for houses built around the turn of the century on shady streets great for running, walking or biking. Three blocks' walk will take you to highly-reviewed restaurants, galleries and boutiques.
Westville is known for its eateries: Bella's is a top-rated brunch joint and people come from all over the area to eat there. Delaney's is another perennial dining establishment that is an easy walk with an exceptional menu of microbreweries, salads and burgers. Cilantro on Whalley is a great fast and healthy Mexican option. Dayton Street Pizza (who delivers), in the same building, is one of the top five New Haven pizzerias. Chinese House of Chao has the freshest ingredients in town.
Need some last-minute groceries or some beer or wine? The Westville market is just two blocks away. We have CitySeed's farmers' market on Sundays from 10-1 at Edgewood Park (five blocks away.) The Amity shopping area has Stop & Shop, Walgreens, and more. And bigger shopping sprees can be found just a few miles south on Rt. 1 in Orange and Milford, where you can find all the major big box stores and a decent mall.
For exercising, there's a popular hot vinyasa yoga studio called "Balanced" nearby on Whalley (there are two other great studios across town, too.) We are near some great tennis courts and all the Yale fields. You can walk to either the Yale courts or Edgewood Park to play tennis for free, or you can enjoy Edgewood Park for its running trails.
And then there's the whole Yale campus just 2 miles down the road.
Transportation: Driving is a snap, as is parking on the street. It's just 1.9 miles to Yale's old campus. I have a number of maps and brochures in the apartment to help orient you once you arrive.
If you prefer, the Q bus stops on the corner of Edgewood and West Elm (just three blocks from the apartment.) This bus takes you to the New Haven Green, connecting to all other busses and a walk across the green gets you to the Yale Campus. It runs about every 1/2 hour. Westville is quite close to exit 59 of the Merritt Turnpike, though it is very easy to get to from Rt. 95 as well. MetroTaxi can be ordered up simply by dialing seven 7's (and they have an app for booking cabs as well.) Zipcars are quite popular around here and easily obtained.
I am open to discussing pets in the apartment. Please let me know if you would like to travel with your pet.
Beds will have clean linen provided but for the duration will not be made up because of a shoulder injury. In addition, if you could strip the beds used after your stay I would be grateful!
We had a wonderful stay at Cate's. The apartment is located near great eating and shopping, is well appointed, and is super clean. The area felt very safe, and provided a nice place to walk our dog. We would recommend this place to any of our friends and family.
Cate's apartment was nice and quiet. The neighborhood was great as well, great coffee at Deja Brew! Just a forty minute walk to New Haven/ Yale campus.
We arrived late and Cate's daughter let us in.
Cate's place is a great weekend getaway! Cate was very responsive and easy to communicate with and made our stay very comfortable. The apartment itself is warm, quiet, cosy, and centrally located - within less than a 10 minute drive from downtown New Haven.
My godson and I stayed in Cate's apartment last week for five days and had a great visit. Cate was kind enough to meet us rather late at night and still took the time to walk us through everything we could possibly need to know about the apartment and neighborhood. The location was convenient for us, we were able to walk to a great restaurant in a blizzard, and it was always toasty warm when we got back home. We would definitely stay again!
Perfectly lovely apt for a couple or a small family (up to 2 youngsters). Space was neat, clean, and organized. Must be able to deal with low-maintenance VERY friendly cat. Host was incredibly helpful and remained available to us throughout (and after) the stay. Host even supplied snacks and refreshments. Highly recommend!
We had a wonderful two-night stay at Cate's in November. Her apartment was clean and welcoming, and she was accommodating, responsive, and friendly with our young daughter--who loved the "bug beds" (bunk beds). The yogurt-stocked fridge was especially nice! I only hope her apartment is free next time we're in New Haven.
Cate's place was so wonderful. It was a rare combination of lovely and comfortable that made us feel completely peaceful and at home as soon as we walked in.
The kitty, Haiku, was so cute and kept the six year old with us happily occupied for hours. It was like setting up a play date.
Cate was so helpful. First of all, she made special arrangements to let us in a bit early which helped so much with relaxing after the long drive. Then, she asked after my friend's child and left her toys and books that were in line with her interests.
On top of that, when we met Cate personally, she was so friendly and fun to talk to. One can immediately tell that she is a great person.
All in all, we had the best time at her place. The hectic trip was made so so much easier as a result.
Definitely stay here if you have a chance!
We decided to try out AirBnB for the first time at the very last minute, and Cate was a fantastic first experience. Her apartment is warm, inviting and very conveniently located to where we needed to be. She also did a great job making sure we knew where to go for good meals. Her cat was a great host as well. Thanks Cate!
Our stay in New Haven, CT was made all the more pleasurable by Cates lovely apartment! The beds were firm and comfortable and topped by one of her hand crafted quilts. The rooms were sunny and well appointed. The apartment is located in a leafy, attractive neighborhood near the Yale Bowl and minutes from downtown. We'll call Cate anytime we visit New Haven!
The four of us had a fantastic weekend staying in Cate's New Haven apartment. She made our rental very easy - responding promptly to messages, greeting us upon our arrival (even though we were half an hour late due to traffic) and giving us a full tour of the apartment. She also left a handy guide to using all of it's amenities, and the kitchen was stocked with tea, breakfast stuff and yoghurts for us. The apartment is very clean, comfortable and spacious with ample room for 4 adults. The bunk beds were very comfortable!
The apartment is in a great area, it feels very safe and quiet, but is also quick easy to get into the centre of New Haven and to Yale.
We loved taking care of Cate's cat, Haiku. Cate left brief instructions on feeding and it was very easy. Haiku is so friendly and adorable that we actually found it very hard to leave! We will definitely stay at Cate's again if we return to New Haven.
