A sunny upstairs flat (~600 sq ft.) in an 1880 Victorian-era English Arts & Crafts garden home, just steps away from downtown NC. A private entrance leads up to two sleeping rooms (queen size bed, and queen-size futon), well-provisioned kitchenette, and marble bathroom with claw foot tub. Enjoy town and a cup of coffee from the front porch. Your hosts have deep roots in the region, and have also lived and traveled in dozens of countries and cultures: we welcome guests from all backgrounds.

The space
The top of this Nevada City Victorian home (c. 1880), with 1920's-era Arts&Craft wrap-around porch, this 600+ sq ft apartment is bright and airy with treetop views.

From your private entrance at the front door, you ascend the stairs to the main bedroom, furnished with a Saatva ("luxury-firm"--good support, soft pillow-top, organic cotton) mattress, antique writing desk, and mirrored vanity.

In the central room, you can enjoy reading from the library, setting up your laptop, or lounging on the futon couch; for guests that request (or who have more than 2 people) we'll convert the queen-sized futon into a second bedroom (or the kids' room).

The back room is the largest, with a fully functioning and well-equipped kitchenette (we should have everything you need; if unsure, just ask). The room also serves as the dining area and lounge.

The bathroom is spacious, with marble floors and a classic clawfoot tub and shower. We highly encourage you to treat yourselves to a soak in the tub, and we provide bath salts. By popular request, we've set the tub up with a shower curtain and option for hands-free showers.

See photo captions for more details.

The floorplan of the flat is such that guests walk through the bedrooms to access the kitchenette or bath. However, there are doors between every room to allow for privacy as needed.

This old house has Victorian-era charm, and also some creaks and cracks that come with age!

The space is also ideal for someone on an extended business trip, or for people considering re-locating to the area and wishing to experience "living in town" before making a housing decision. We offer a 10% discount for week-long stays, and will offer the same discount for 5 night stays: send an inquiry and we'll send you a special offer with the discount.

Guest access
Upon checking in with your hosts on-site, you'll have your own keys to the private entrance upstairs, with exclusive use to the whole space. We live in the downstairs of the house (with our two dogs), and gladly share our front porch with you: feel free to relax with your coffee on the porch and chat with passers-by.

The backyard, which you'll partly see from the kitchen window, is an ever-evolving permaculture garden, with espalier fruit trees, food and flower beds, a wildlife and goldfish pond (and irrigation reservoir, a central component of an integrated water conservation practice) and a large deck. We'll gladly give a tour of the backyard for those who are interested in rainwater catchment, greywater, permaculture, etc.--just express your interest at check-in. Otherwise, we ask guests not to visit the back garden and pond unaccompanied, primarily because the pond is steep sided and without safety railing and we otherwise let our dogs run free back there.

If you're staying for several days, ask about use of our guest laundry facilities, which are located in the basement.

Other things to note
We allow guests to bring a dog--let us know in advance--and we charge a flat $25 cleaning fee, to be paid separately and directly to us at check-in. We ask guests to kindly keep dogs off the furniture and beds.

We also offer custom floral arrangements with seasonal flowers grown sustainably and with stored rainwater on site and at our family farm just outside of town. Abundant, mixed floral bouquets are an additional $25. Let us know at least 48 hours before your stay if you'd like a beautiful bouquet waiting for you in your suite.

The location is tops, steps away from the cafes, boutiques, galleries, saloons, theaters, museums, monuments and raw food elixir bars that define present-day Nevada City.

The relatively new Tribute Trail affords an opportunity for a nature walk among the pines and along (and over) Deer Creek in the environs just outside of downtown, without getting in your car. Similarly, the Hirschman's Pond trail explores a strangely enchanting hydraulically-mined landscape. Both are dog-friendly.

There are abundant outdoor opportunities (e.g. South Yuba River), and check the entertainment calendars (e.g. Miner's Foundry, Nevada City Chamber of Commerce or Grass Valley Center for the Arts) for music and performance art: you may be surprised to see national headliners rolling through town during your visit!

Like all hotels and short-term rental hosts registered with the City of Nevada City, guests are charged a 10% TOT (aka. hotel tax), which AirBnB now collects at the time of your booking and remits directly to the City.

The whole of downtown Nevada City is an "historical district," preserving the gold rush era architecture, with Broad Street running up the center of town. Broad Street forks at a grand Victorian house at the top of town, there's a string of vintage homes up to the right on East Broad Street...we're the fifth house up the way. Steps away from the action of town, yet tranquil, especially at night.

For the many events and parades throughout the year (e.g Tour of NC Bicycle Race, Mardi Gras Carnival, etc.) our porch offers a front row seat. Check the calendar of events at the NC Chamber of Commerce, the Miner's Foundry, the Nevada Theater, the Haven Underground and local restaurants and saloons to learn about live music, performances, conferences and film festivals in town. (And remember Grass Valley, with all the happenings at the Center for the Arts, the Nevada County Fair Grounds and elsewhere, is just a 5-10 minute drive.)

I had a "first career" as an environmental, economic justice and human rights advocate, leading conservation programs and river protection organizations in Marin County, the "Yuba Watershed" and internationally (primarily in Asia, Latin America and Africa). I've lived, traveled, worked and studied in dozens of countries and cultures. Having returned to my "hometown" of Nevada City with my wife Tania and our teenage daughter, I now split my time between hosting guests, managing a flower farm, and volunteering with community organizations. Having first hosted AirBnb guests when living in Berkeley years ago (when AirBnb was truly a "sharing economy" experience, sharing our bathroom and kitchen with visitors from all over the world), we've evolved our hospitality operation to include a number of distinctive and high quality accommodations in Nevada City and environs. Both in our own Victorian-era home in downtown Nevada City--and in partnership with friends and family who own and steward scenic agricultural, forest and stream-side properties outside of town--we aim to provide our guests with an exceptional and memorable experience while visiting Nevada City and South Yuba River. Jason was raised in Nevada City and we bought this grand 1880 Victorian when it wasn't so grand in 2005, and have now put over a decade of love, care and resources into making it our family home to share with friends and guests. We are water people who advocate for healthy rivers and social justice issues locally and around the world. For six years, Jason was director of the local river advocacy organization, SYRCL (including the Wild & Scenic Film Festival), and Tania was director of the Yuba Watershed Institute, founded by Gary Snyder and others. In addition to these extensive relationships with local people and place, we both have also led international organizations: Tania primarily supporting popular education in Latin America and Jason's work with International Rivers was global in scope. Jason's attention is now focused on the home, garden, family, guests and local projects, while Tania works very full-time as a public policy facilitator throughout California. We have a 15 year old daughter who enjoys pottery, poetry and just about any new and interesting experience. We love gardening, travel, books, exploring the natural world and adventures of all kinds. While hesitant to claim fluency in any language, we can make conversation in Spanish, Russian, Italian and Shona, can read some French and have translation dictionaries for Swahili and Indonesian languages!

During your stay
After the orientation and passing of the keys, if you seek privacy, you'll only see us in passing in the front yard, or if you call upon us for any need that may arise. We enjoy getting to know guests and sharing our recommendations for making the most of your time in the area, and will gladly do so at your initiative.

Tania and Jason bought this house and assumed responsibility for this vintage Victorian in 2005, and have now put in over a decade of renovations and restorations throughout the home and landscape and gardens. If you're interested, and we're available, we'll gladly share details.

As noted in our bios, we're also well connected to the people and places of Nevada City and the Yuba River and northern Sierra Nevada region more broadly. We're happy to share tips, recommendations and warnings: we see our local experience as part of our value to guests.

Mostly, though, you'll have privacy and quietude.
